Top Amazon Reviews

  • 4 stars to start, we will see where this goes....
Size: 6.6'x8.2' Color: Beige
Purchased for an overlanding trip with off grid camping. I plan to sleep in a hammock under the awning. I mounted it to the cargo basket of a 2004 Grand Cherokee. The mounting hardware didn't really work with my application, and I honestly didn't like the looks of it anyway. I used the supplied M8 bolt, along with my own M8 stainless nut with a spot of blue Loctite, and a stainless split washer under the bolt head. For mounting brackets I used a Nilight "Horizontal Bar Clamp Mounting Kit", with 4 clamps - available here on Amazon. I used all four Nilight clamps to mount. I have not completely deployed it yet, as it was raining. I plan to camp this weekend so I will try it out then and add some more pics.... Noted thus far: The extruded back plate is really nice and is likely the majority of the cost here. Very stiff. The boot that goes over the closed unit seems pretty heavy as well, although I am not a big fan of the zipper used. I would rather see 2 zippers that meet in the middle that can clip together. Instead the zipper is facing the front of the Jeep, head on into 75mph wind on the freeway, and I am betting will unzip itself in the wind. I also don’t like the looks of the stitching of the zipper track at the very end, and am a little concerned of it fraying and coming apart on the freeway over 1000’s of miles. I added a small tie wrap to secure the zipper pull for now, and plan to fab a plastic cap to cover the end during transport. Another review on here noted an upgrade made to prevent failure of the pole hinges, and I 100% see the point. The hole through the poles that allow a bolt to pass through for a hinge point, are too big for the bolt. The other reviewer hacked 1" off of the hinged ends, and drilled smaller holes that are better sized to the hinge bolt for a tighter fit with less wobble in the wind. I plan to do the same before the overlanding trip, and will add pics here. The awning fabric itself is on the thin side and won't even give it a chance to prove it is water proof - I plan to spray it with camp dry as soon as I open it. I may well be water proof, but I would rather spray it down before I am cold and wet with a drip on my face at 2am. In short, I had to dock a point for the zipper – it could very easily be a better design, and the ends stitched better. But overall, so far, it is worth the low price! I do indeed update all my reviews as far back as Amazon will let me, so this will be updated with actual field use, mods, and more pics. ***UPDATE 5.1.2023*** - I finally opened it for the first time as part of prepping for my trip. One thing to note, is it next to impossible to open with one person if the wind is blowing. The wind took it away from me and mangled the already too big thru hole in the poles, and the track they mounted in. I straightened the bent hinge points for the poles, and went ahead and made the "upgrade" I noted above that another user mentioned. To upgrade, remove all the poles - both vertical and both horizontal poles. Cut the end of the pole off, just enough to remove the factory thru holes. Be sure and extend the pole enough before you cut, or you will cut through the plastic cam lock mechanism inside that locks the extended pole. Drill new holes as close to the bolt size as possible. If I recall correctly, they were 8mm bolts and I used an 8.5mm drill bit. I also added some stainless fender washers to take up all the slop between the poles and the mounting point where they hinge. Note the pictures. Also note how big the factory hole is around the bolt as compared to after I cut and re-drilled. I am not docking an additional star on any of this for 2 reason. First, it was my fault the wind pulled the awning away from me - the OEM can't control the weather. Second, this is literally the cheapest awning of this size. I will still get my money's worth out of it, despite having to make repairs/upgrades. If you don't want to apply the same effort, I would NOT recommend this awning. You really can't buy the cheapest one out there and expect it to perform like the ones that cost TWICE as much. ... show more

  • Keep your expectations low and you'll be impressed
Size: 6.6'x8.2' Color: Beige
Bought this for occasional use as some shade and rain protection during the day in-between morning and evening paramotor flights. It's quite cheap, and the... Everything... Is quite thin. The poles will be easy to kink, the fabric easy to tear, but if you're careful with it, this is a sub-$150 6x8 awning. You get what you pay for, and I'm happy with what I got for $119 (on sale). It mounts to my 2008 Honda Element easily, maybe a 30 minute job. The rail of the awning has some play so that perfect 90⁰ brackets are not necessary, which is good because my roof cross bars aren't flat, they angle back about 20⁰ but the awning still slides onto the bolts just fine. Critically, my element has suicide rear doors and I wanted the awning to cover the opening of both doors, so as you can see it had to mount quite far forward. Doing 70 mph, I notice no wobbling or shaking or even excess road noise (though to be clear I'm already driving a brick...) The awning comes with 2 ropes that needed modification to actually cinch tight, and 2 small stakes, as well as wrenches and mounting hardware which I found adequate. By leaving the 90⁰ mounting brackets on the roof cross bars and loosening the bolts on the awning's rail design, I can slide this off the car in 5 minutes and reinstall when I plan a new trip. Deployment and retraction is a hard task solo. There's no graceful way to do it, it's all going to flop around on you. Don't overtighten the extension poles, and don't overextend them. You'll want to mark the maximum length minus 8" or so to be safe. Overall, 9/10 would buy again, probably grey though. Tan still lets a lot of light through. ... show more

  • Solid Budget Awning
Size: 6.6'x8.2' Color: Beige
I bought this awning mainly due to the review given by Wizbang72. And for 130 bucks I didn’t care if it only ended up getting used twice. First impressions is that I could probably mock up some better hardware to mount it to my roof rail and the awning seems to sag in the bag and rests on my rear door so I have to hold it to close the door (nit picking). I wrapped the awning tighter to the rail with some paracord for now but I want to eventually put some adjustable clips or Velcro straps to make it easier to tighten up. I bought this mainly for a car camping music festival and if it survived that, I’ll would be using it for beach trips, camping, etc. After four days of decent winds and a couple hours of pouring rain, its safe to say that I am thoroughly impressed. I even forgot to tilt the awning down before the rain and it held a significant amount of water without ripping. ... show more

  • Followed the advice of other reviews...
Size: 6.6'x8.2' Color: Beige
As others have explained the ends are flimsy and the holes the bolt goes through are too big. So I followed their advice and cut off the ends and re-drilled the holes to a tighter tolerance, but I decided to go one step further. I replaced the bolts with 80mm ones to run all the way through the base so the weight is spread out along all three fins of the back plate; and I added a pvc pipe on the inside to add some durability, but keep some flex. The pipe I used is 13" long, but depending on your need you could go shorter or a bit longer as it will impede how far you can shrink the poles. ... show more
