  • Use some type of coffee can/bucket that will fit inside the bag to fill the bag with seed
#1) The 1st thing you need when you buy this bag spreader (or any type of bag spreader) is a plastic coffee can. You can not keep the seed from falling out due to the bag rolls over with the weight of the seed you are adding to the bag. You can fill your 25 ounce coffee jug up with seed and put the jug into the bag without spilling your seed on the ground. It is very difficult/to impossible to pour a 50 lb bag of winter rye into the bag without looking like the video should be placed on america's funny home videos. #2) The push button has a metal lever on the bottom so the seed flows out at a constant rate and can be tighten with a wing nut in that position. I tried just pushing the button down the whole time and found that this hurts after 30-40 minutes of depressing the button. The lever works, but is hard to adjust to the exact flow I am trying to obtain. ... show more

  • Easy to use

  • OK
It works, but not that user friendly.

  • Not suitable for a new lawn
I have used this seed spreader four times now. It is still not easy to operate. The lock is very fussy and will either dump out seeds at an alarming rate or give none at all. If I try to keep a finger on the controls to be quick to close the gate then my hand is blocking the distribution pattern. And the distribution pattern is nearly a full-circle which sends seeds onto the operator no matter what position or orientation the spreader is held in. Even the hand-crank will dip into the spread pattern with every turn! Operating from waist-high, even the slightest breeze blows away the falling grass seeds. For a lawn a spreader that drops from much closer to the ground is better. This one might be good for a hunting game plot but not for a precisely metered and distributed application like putting in a new lawn. ... show more

  • Perfect for Seeding 3-4 acres
Perfect for seeding 3-4 acres. It's important to understand how to adjust the flow before you start seeding. Make yourself familiar before you start.

  • Metal gearing is a bonus
I used this spreader to spread seed and nitrogen over a couple acres of field. When it arrived I was happy to see the metal handle and gearing and feel pleased about the construction. What I thought was challenging was setting a wing nut that determines the amount of product flow onto the rotating broadcast part. It was awkward and it seems that a simple lever adjustment would be better. The wing nut also has to hold back a spring and that whole assembly could have better engineering. Overall though, for the money it did a good job and seems pretty durable. ... show more

  • The zipper is crap and fails after a few hours
These old clunkers are the last of the breed. I need this model to modify so as to spread smooth broam seed for Iowa farm terraces. They can be modified to do this by opening up the hole in the bottom and moving things around. (broam is a very coarse seed the bunches up in a spreader). The zipper is crap and fails after a few hours, the strap slips out of adjustment, rather poorly made but the only one that can be made to work that I have found. I bought another in case they go away (total 3 that work and several junkers for spare parts) ... show more

  • Arrived missing the nut that connects the handle to the spreader
This seems to be a good product. It did require a trip to a local hardware store as it was missing a nut that is absolutely needed to connect the handle to the spreader so that it could be used. This is why I'm only giving it a 3 star as it defeated the purpose of ordering online.
