  • Fantastic Subwoofer, and yes it really makes a difference!
Best subwoofer I've ever used. If you're wondering whether (i) a subwoofer matters to your home studio, or (ii) whether this particular subwoofer will make a HUGE difference to your home studio, the answer is YES!!!!! Great power, nice tight sound, no unnatural booms, exceptionally solid construction, excellent crossover and retains imaging and detail beautifully Not only does it give you incredible bass performance, keeping the low end out of your near field monitors (using the low cut control) allows them to perform much better in the frequency range where they perform best. I've tried it in a large studio and in a small project studio I use for mixing and mastering and it sounds incredible in both. I've paired it with Genelecs, mackies and a pair of B&W monitors (don't laugh, they sound great and have a very natural flat frequency response) and it was everything I could have ever hoped for. I upgraded from another brand that had a larger front-facing driver because I needed a slightly smaller form factor for the project studio, and was skeptical as to whether it was powerful enough paired with a 200/side watt BGW reference amp or whether I was wasting a bit of money because I could have gotten a lot of subs that cost less, and there is absolutely no question that it was worth every penny. I have to keep it down at about 4 even with the BGW clocked at 10. If you can afford it, buy it. If not, save up for it. One last lesson learned: I used a very direct signal path this time going direct from my universal audio interface into the HS8 and am extremely pleased by how much clearer the sound is and how much detail is retained as opposed to running it into a Mackie Big Knob first (as much as I like the Big Knob, the fewer things you put in your signal path the better). ... show more

  • Hits some very satisfying lows
This 8” sub performs equally, and perhaps smoother than my 10” JBL LSR310S and takes up a lot less space. The Yamaha is a lot more natural sounding than the JBL if you want the hear accurate string bass. The attack with heavy percussion is also much tighter with the Yamaha. VERY satisfied! (10x12 room with foam boards on walls, positioned 2’ from wall on carpeted floor). ... show more

  • Can't go without!
I had a couple reasons for buying this subwoofer. I love listening to house music and I was missing out on a lot of the low end, I've gotten into audio mixing recently and having a subwoofer helps to hear everything, and I already had the Yamaha HS5's and this paired perfectly with them. For casual listening, this simply sounds amazing. I primarily listen to house and rock music and it adds a layer to the music you can't get otherwise. If you are someone who appreciates music, this will make you appreciate it even more. When it comes to mixing, I have been able to hear low rumble and background noise I haven't heard before and have been able to get rid of it. Definitely worth it in that department. Lastly, I already owned the Yamaha HS5 speakers and this subwoofer is in the same series of studio monitors so they work flawlessly. The only category that got 4 stars was the value because it depends on your needs/wants. I would personally give it 5 stars for value but to someone not musically inclined, they might see it as 4 stars. Overall, I highly recommend this subwoofer, just be sure to not wake up your neighbors ;) ... show more

  • Worth every cent. Highest fidelity.
I bought this for my personal studio setup to compliment my Yamaha HS5 studio monitors. I use the studio for listening to music at the highest quality I possibly can an mastering video audio. While this would be the first subwoofer for me to personally own, it is not the first subwoofer I have been around, as someone who visits many studios and lives with a DJ. Easily the highest quality subwoofer I have come across in my opinion, as someone who prefers quality and fidelity over loudness. Not to say this is not loud, in fact it get's as loud as I would ever want to get it, rattling the objects and windows in my room at half volume on the sub and just over half volume on my sound card. Cannot recommend this more for studio use for mixing/mastering, or just to please an audiophile's ears (I use it for both). Hardly a detriment but something worth noting: this sub can move across a flat surface like polished wood when playing. Very, very slowly, about as fast as grass grows, but it will move overtime. ... show more

  • The HS8 Subwoofer makes you realize how much low end is missing from the HS8 speakers
I've used my HS8 monitors for recording and knew that I was missing the bottom end but haven't had the opportunity to get the sub until recently. It makes a huge difference in the sound stage. Having all available frequencies for playback in the studio is super nice. No longer have to run out to the car with the subwoofer to test out the low end. :-) A worthwhile purchase that has brought a smile to my face every day since I set it up. ... show more

  • Just make sure run your monitors into the sub and the sub into your receiver/amp/soundcard
I struggled with getting the sub to sound right because I didn't read the manual at first. Just make sure to do what I said and it will work perfectly.

  • Decent
I actually have two of these subs paired with two HS80M studio monitors. One sub alone outputs decent bass, but I feel the sub is not on par in terms of quality with the HS80M studio monitors. Obviously the sub outputs more bass than the monitors, I am just talking about in terms of bang for the buck, I feel that the monitors are a league above the HS8 sub. I feel like Yamaha means for this sub to be paired with the HS80M/HS8 monitors, or they wouldn't share the moniker. I do not feel that the crossover is great between the sub and the monitor frequencies. The second sub I received has some slight alterations as it is a newer version purchased at a later date than the first. It also sounds different/responds to different frequencies as demonstrated by a frequency test I performed in Ableton, so be aware that not all HS8 subwoofers are the same. Overall, I am glad I have two subs just to balance out the soundstage/directionality of the sound. Prior to this it always sounded like the sound was coming from the upper left of my desk cabinet, whereas after adding the second sub the sound is more centered in the soundstage. The addition of the second sub did not drastically improve sound quality. Any improvement, if there is one, is slight. ... show more

  • Simply blown away by Yamaha Audio.
Best sub I have had the pleasure of using. No annoying rattle. Just precise lows.
