Excellent accuracy. Loud. Crisp. If you want to hear more low end , buy the subwoofer. For me, I use them for mixing and they are simply wonderful as is. They're big, but look nice. Sound adjustment controls are great and make a difference in your space. I've got no buzzing, or digital scratchiness. The amps are well shielded or grounded. These are fantastic monitors. They produce a good flat, non-enhanced non-colored sound. I use these to listen to music. I am not a professional studio person, or an amateur recorder. They are hooked up to my pc through a USB audio interface box for playback only. My ITunes music library is MASSIVE. I converted all my cd's to apple lossless format, and it sounds fantastic. These monitors have enabled me to hear sounds in the music that I have never heard on artificial speakers. I really love the natural sound, and love knowing that this is how the music was really mixed, and intended to be heard. With the rear firing bass port, placement away from a rear wall does make a big difference, and with any high quality monitors, such as these, room acoustics does play a big part. The built in amps are powerful, and even when turned way up, do not produce hissing or white noise of any kind. I can’t speak for studio use, but for professional listening, they are awesome. I bought these on a recommendation to move away from audio speakers to reference monitors. The basic idea is that these do not "paint" the sound but instead given a totally accurate output of the master/mix. This means you can hear the lower quality in a poor audio file (e.g. a poor quality mp3 or audio stream) BUT when you listen to a high-quality input i.e. Itunes, vinyl they sound amazing. You can actually hear what the artist and/or professional sound engineer want you to hear. Not exaggerating when I say it makes songs I've listened to for 20 years sound new - I can hear things I never heard before. High and low-end response are nuts!! I added the HS8S sub to share the bass load - but these work well alone. I'd recommend buying these first and adding the sub as an up-spec. The build, design, and controls are all top-notch. Pro tip: buy Mogami Gold cables too. ... show more

My five-star rating is based on what my ears hear when my guitars are plugged into an Axe FX-II with the main XLR outputs connected to a pair of HS8 studio monitors. No matter what patch I throw at them the HS8 does the Axe justice. I vacillated for several months while researching studio monitors in the $300 to $700 price range and took a leap of faith on Yamaha's reputation on previous models. After a month of daily use, my ears tell me I made the right choice. I like to record my practice sessions so that I can critically listen to my performance, zeroing in on what sounds good and where I need improvement. When creating new patches with different pedals, amps, and cabinets, I'm confident that the HS8 monitors are faithfully reproducing the intended tone and sonic delivery. There's no question in my mind that I wouldn't hesitate in buying another pair if and when I require them. For the money the HS8 monitors are an excellent choice. ... show more

**EDIT** I may have fixed this issue by unplugging my computer and audio interface from the same socket that my router is plugged into. If that is the fix, then that wouldn't be an issue with Yamaha and the HS8s, and since these felt like a huge upgrade from my KRK Rokits, I'm giving them 5 stars. I don't think you could beat them for the price. These monitors have only sat on my desk since I got them in July 2018 (5 months ago) and they are already creating an annoying buffeting noise. With nothing plugged into them they still make the noise. I'm really disappointed considering how highly recommended these monitors are. I feel like Yamaha just took my money. ... show more
