  • 10 reasons why you should get this.
Style: Guitalele Color: Natural
Alright people, I’m gonna break down why you want this with 10 points, let’s get it 1. Imagine a guitar the size of an alto saxophone, and/or the size of one of those impressively long watermelons, that are thin for some reason. Is that something you want? Yes it is. Get it. 2. You ever wanted to be pretentious in public by taking an acoustic guitar around? Those things are huge, and difficult to play in Cars, hammocks, and crowded busses, where you’ll annoy people. Instead, opt for this instrument, which will make people judge you, but not before questioning the size of your instrument. 3. It’s made by Yamaha, these people make everything from trumpets, to motorcycles, to cybernetic androids that can make French toast with basic ingredients, a lighter, and some ambition. You want it. 4. Let’s get real for a minute, The strings are dental floss, but you know what? you’re not buying this thing for the strings, so cut those things off and put some metals on it like an adult. 5. No strap mount? No problem, take a screw and throw it on the bottom of the instrument and get playing, because people who complain about petty details don’t deserve tiny guitars 6. The instrument projects really well for its size, like a baby on public transport, play this thing with a pick, and some ambition, and Everyone in your hemisphere will hear you. (Note : players with small hands, or people that play crazy wide chords, you’ll love this) 7. Alright let’s get real, the carrying case is a Kroger bag, but you know what, this instrument weighs as much as a can of Pepsi, so you’ll probably be fine. 8. Let’s talk about tone quality, imagine a 250 dollar guitar with a capo on the fifth fret. That’s what you’re getting. It’s pretty good. 9. Built quality : you could use this guitar for home defense. 10. Final verdict : you won’t regret buying this. As an instrument, it’s just good for your heart. It’ll listen to you, it’ll comfort you to hold, and play it, and you’ll make some great memories with it. 10/10 worth it. ... show more

  • A great little instrument
Style: Guitalele Color: Natural
I've played for nearly 50 years, and am very fond of Yamaha nylon string guitars. This little guy is no exception. The quality of the materials and the precision of construction are surprisingly good, for so inexpensive an instrument. It performs well, with consistent action and clear intonation up the full length of the fret board. I'm a finger-style player, very much into experimentation and improvisation, and am really enjoying the varied colors and delicate variations of tone that can be coaxed out of a GL1. Somewhere in there is a woody, banjo-y voice, completely unique to a guitalele. You'll know it when you find it. These things are called by various names: guitalele, guitarlele, guilele, and kīkū (kee·koo). I'm going with kīkū. As others have noted, it requires higher tuning than a guitar, and more frequent tuning. A E C G D A does seem optimal. I've got a Guardian CG-020-UT Tenor Ukulele case on order for this. I haven't received it as of this writing, but a number of reviewers say it's a good fit for their GL1. The free carry bag that comes with the instrument doesn't really provide adequate protection. Addendum #1: The case mentioned above arrived today. It is, indeed, a very good fit for the GL1. Addendum #2, regarding replacement strings: The strings that came installed on the instrument wore out in short order. (I do a lot of note bends, hammer-ons, vibratos and the like, which tend to burn through the windings of the lower strings rather quickly, particularly when the fret wires are brand new.) Anyway, strings packaged specifically for the guilele can be a bit hard to find when you need them quickly. I generally use D'Addario EJ45 Pro Arte Normal Tension NYLON strings on my classical guitars, so I put a set on the guilele. They sound great in A E C G D A tuning--better than what came with it out of the box, in my opinion. The diameters are so similar that I can't tell the difference, nor do I notice any significant difference in string tension. Bear in mind that nylon strings ALWAYS take a day or two to stabilize, and frequent tuning even after that goes with the territory. ... show more

  • Like A 27 Inch 12 Fret Guitar With A Slotted Headstock!
Style: Guitalele Color: Natural
I got this about an hour ago....and had to tear myself away from it to write this review. It has a beautiful, sweet tone and nice projection, probably in part due to Yamaha's careful manufacture and the lovely solid spruce top. It is a very attractive instrument. I had seen it about a month ago and kept looking and looking at it and finally pulled the trigger on purchasing it. I am so glad I did. I am a small woman who takes a size 6 glove. I can play the much detested full barre F chord on this because of my small hands. I think this would be a perfect small child guitar. This instrument is tuned the same as the fifth fret of a guitar: ADGCEA. (Ukulele players will note the familiar GCEA.) I saw a very nice YouTube video that shows a guitarist retuning this instrument to EADGBE, normal guitar tuning. He did it by fitting it with Hannabach 890T 1/8 sized classical guitar strings, and this same Yamaha GL1 Guilele performed very nicely. Those are high end classical 1/8 scale guitar strings and the cost is commensurate with the quality. They are sold right here if you search "Hannabach 890T". I have not tried this yet myself but will when I get those strings. The YouTube video was very encouraging. My purpose on buying this instrument was three fold. I can play it in my garden in a lawn chair even with armrests. It is gentler on my fingers once I've made them sore on a steel string guitar and I can keep up with my online lessons if I end up with knee replacement surgery and need to keep my leg up. It makes a perfect substitute for a guitar that could be played in a bed! I've thrown some ideas out here to help you make up your mind. It is a gorgeous instrument at this price point! ... show more
