Takes a lot of practice to get flares right because of a couple idiosyncrasies. First is that after flaring you will notice an imperfection on the back of the flare. At first, I thought I didn't operate it right but realized that the imperfection is created by the crack where the die half's close. The soft metal get pushed into the crack. It helps if you make sure to close the die completely and tightly or it will be worse. Second, the directions say after the clutch breaks to add a couple turns to smooth the flare. I tried that and it seemed to create problems. Now once the clutch breaks I just back it off and it goes better. Adding a little refrigerant oil to the tool cone helped a lot also. I found the tool acceptable but do not like have to smooth that imperfection on the back of the flange after each process. ... show more

First - this is an eccentric flare tool. Second - it flares to 37 degrees Third - it has a clutch that will disengage when the correct flare has been reached. You can't overtighten. All that to say that if you make a nice square cut on the copper, debur well, and install with about 1mm above the flared area, you will get a very good flare. I've used it to install 2 mini splits with no leaks. I also used Nylog Gasket sealer on the flare - not on the threads. Just spend a few bucks for a bottle. ***Don't forget to put the nut on the tube before flaring or you'll be doing a second flare. Ask how I know. ... show more

I did not realize that this was a conical flare tool when I purchased it originally but it turned out that this was the exact product that I needed. The tool feels extremely sturdy and the overall build quality is excellent. The common observer might assume that this was a very high end name brand tool instead of a value brand at first glance. This is a heavy-duty tool that does an excellent job of flaring. I used it on copper tubing and it did a much better job than my old set of tools. I would recommend this for anyone looking for a quality set at a reasonable price
