  • Great unit
The Robinair worked great. It's a pretty quiet unit compared to others, and works quickly. I hope it serves me for years to come. It's also very compact . I remember my first recovery unit, which felt like it weighed 50 lbs. and was a lot bigger than this one. These machines have come a long way over the years. ... show more

  • Alternative to an automatic machine
Following the failure of my automatic AC recovery and recharge machine, I decided I no longer needed to replace it with another expensive machine. I looked at using individual components for recovery, evacuation and recharge and the numbers just added up for my use. Not doing a lot of AC jobs, I don't mind spending a little more time using the separate tools. When I saw the Robinair name on this machine, I decided to buy and I was not disappointed. This is easy to use and has a nice instruction manual geared toward both my need for automotive and large systems where a portable machine is a necessity. After securing the needed hoses, adapters and recovery tank I hooked it up and tried it on a customer vehicle that still had a partial charge. The inlet connection is via the yellow hose on the gauge set and required an adapter from 1/4 SAE to 1/2 ACME thread so the 134a hose would connect. The outlet was connected to the recovery via a 1/4 x 1/4 hose I purchased for this purpose and no other adapters were required. The machine does come with a couple adapters that may work for your installation. Robinair suggests evacuation of liquid first and then vapor to speed the process which still was fairly quick on my partially charged system and pulled it down to around 20". An inline filter and stub hose is included in the box and will keep contaminants out of the machine and recovery tank. The addition of a vacuum pump and scale and of course a drum of 134a will complete the process. I would rate this a must have for a small auto shop looking for an alternative to spending thousands of dollars on a fully automatic machine. ... show more

  • Perfect for my mini split
It did the job well. It doesn't have a purge function, but I really didn't want that, since the complicated piping in a purge system seems impossible to not trap air which will later be released into your refrigerant canister. Would have liked to go with the Appion G5 Twin, but I couldn't justify that price for the small amount I will use it. I only plan to do R410A, so I just close the valves after the job and keep it like that until the next job months later. ... show more

  • Great little machine.
Love the size and portability of this machine. Being a single cylinder machine the recovery speed leaves a little to be desired but the quality appears to be top notch. My first job using this machine was a 2 ton heat pump which had been hacked and had R-410 installed instead of the required R-22. I recovered 7.9 pounds in a reasonable time and the machine never seemed to strain or run hot even though the ambient temperature was in the high 90's with a 107 heat index. The RG-3 came with a a short interconnecting hose and a filter drier which is required to be used with each recovery! For technicians that don't require a super fast recovery machine for high volume jobs this little machine will fufill your needs at a very reasonable price ... show more

  • Not reliable bad quality
This is very expensive considering the durability issues. Robinair used to mean quality. I used mine 1time then a month later it doesn’t build vacuum. = Now a $500 machine works one time and then does not work at all.? These are not meant to be disposable. No rebuild kit is available for purchase. Considering the quality issues that’s absurd. If unit is still under warranty you can possibly send it back for exchange (fingers crossed). If not under warranty you are out of luck. This is another disappointing drop in quality. ... show more

  • Great Value for the Shadetree Mechanic
This little machine does a great job, especially for automotive applications. For whatever reason, Robinair does not post the instruction manual for this machine on their website. I find this to be foolish, especially since I almost didn't buy it because of conflicting information about refrigerant compatibility available on the internet. At the end, I took the plunge, and sure enough, in the manual it says it's good for R-134a. It recovers about 2 pounds in 30 minutes or so. If you live in a hot climate and have any desire to do this kind of work yourself, you should pick this machine up. It will help you save lots of money. AC service adds up fast when they start having to do diagnostics to chase problems. You could easily pay for this machine in the savings. Here on Amazon, it will cost you about $700 to get tooled up to do AC work on your car with basic tools like the RG3. Learn about it on Youtube, and pretty soon you'll be staying cool. ... show more
