  • Great product
We used this to refurb butcher block counters that came with our house. Took a few coats but there’s plenty in the container left over.

  • Great product! But please follow the instructions
Gives a great finish to the maple butcher block top on our kitchen island. Some of the negative reviewers did not follow the instructions on the can: 1. Apply sparingly using a cloth. I used an old white tee shirt. Do not even think about using a brush, roller, pad or any other applicator. 2. Rub the material into the wood using circular motions. 3. After a few minutes use a clean cloth to rub down the wood in straight lines running with the grain. The goal is to remove any and all excess sealer. If you wait too long, the sealer will set and excess will be difficult to remove. 4. Wait at least 4 hours. If your work area is cold wait 8 to 12 hours. Don't even start if it's colder than 60 degrees. 5. Sand down the work area using finer grit paper each coat. Extra fine steel wool also works well. 6. Repeat for a total of at least 4 layers - The more more layers you apply the more robust the finish. As important, with each added layer, the finish gains depth, and looks better and better. Also, the layers get easier and easier to apply. We do not cut, or chop directly on our island top. We do not place hot pots and pans on it. We take care not to scrape the bottom of rough cast iron pans across it. We do use it to knead dough, roll out pastry, and shape rolls, french bread, pizza, cookies and scones. We use it to sort our fruit and vegetables prior to cutting. The surface is resilient, cleans up well and looks great. I would recommend back sealing your butcher block prior to installing it. This will prevent moisture from getting in, and potentially warping or cracking your butcher block. And of course it's really important to prepare the top surface of the butcher block prior to application of the first coat of sealer - but this applies to any varnish or sealer. My bottom line is that it is much easier to get a great finish with this product than with polyurethane, shellac or varnish. Of course those sealers also have their place. But for butcher block tops, I highly recommend this product. ... show more

  • Really the Good Stuff!
My friend the cabinet and furniture maker recommended Emmet's Good Stuff to finish my Hemlock trim (door frames, baseboards and window surrounds). It's expensive, but I make it up on time and the finish is beautiful. Very low gloss, no color change, low odor and drop-dead easy to use. I lightly sanded the Hemlock with 120 and a palm sander, dusted and wiped it down with a dry rag. One coat on the back sides and butt cuts. 3-4 coats on the fronts and edges with 0000 steel wool lightly between coats. Application: Nitryl gloves and an old t-shirt. Depending on the width of a board, I dip 2 or 3 fingers in to the first knuckle and start 6" from the end of the board and work with circular strokes out to the end and then move back past the starting point. With your gloved hand, scrape any excess into a new area. Use as small an amount as possible to get a wet look on your work. In 1-2 minutes (depending on temperature) wipe the area with straight, with the grain strokes using your t-shirt rag. If the rag drags, you waited too long or didn't put enough Good Stuff on the wood. Wait a minimum of 4 hours between coats (I cheat and wait 3 hours if I can dry them in the SE Alaska sunshine – not usually very intense) and hit it lightly with 0000 steel wool to smooth it out. The more coats, the less material you need to apply. Just make certain that when you wipe it off it's not tacky. The only way to get bad results is to use too much or let it get dry before wiping it off. A bit of a learning curve, but super fast and easy to use. It's hard to see the gloss, but you can see the SE Alaska Rain forest mist beading up on the surface in the first image. The second image shows before and after 4 coats. 6 star rating if I could. ... show more

  • Amazing, Easy to use Product
This "stuff" is absolutely amazing. I took on my first DIY project with maple butcher block and after lots of research ended up choosing the Good stuff for my bar. I had a lot of surface area to coat for a really big bar and ended up using 2.5 quarts. Here's the process i took. I sanded all tops and bottoms with 150 grit and then 220 grit sandpaper first. I then applied a coat, sanded with 400 grit 4 hrs later and applied a second coat. Then sanded with 600 grit and applied a third coat, then sanded with 0000 fine steel wool, and applied a fourth coat. I carefully used tact cloth in between to remove all the dust and I couldn't be more happy with the results. For application i shook the can out to drop a dollup on the countertop and used a t-shirt rag in circular motion to work it towards the corners and then back to the middle. I then waited 3 minutes and used a clear rag and ran it from end to end following the grain of the butcher block. good luck, i guarantee you'll love this product. Just really amazing!!! Wish it would let me upload before and after photos ... show more

  • It realistically Good Stuff
We needed a product to seal our butcher block countertops for our cafe. Our local Environmental Health department requires a food grade sealant approved by the FDA or USDA. This product fit the bill. As for application, it’s more a paste consistency. Very easy to apply. I would suggest going light on each coat allowing enough time in between each coat. Don’t expect a big gloss finish. It’s a warm deep matte finish that repels water most superbly. ... show more
