They are slightly heavier than the plastic versions, but as a beginner I don't notice it. They seem durable to me, but I suspect that repeated hard ground strikes would cause handle failure like other reviews have mentioned. I rattle-canned mine for a custom look. Very happy with them.

Handles broke off on separate swings hitting moderately hard. If you're a little more active to start, probably spend more for a high quality pair. Not hitting them hard they are just fine.
