  • A steady rest is exactly that.
Style: Yellow
I don’t turn large objects but it really adds stability to the my projects on the lathe - it definitely helps with finials.

  • Needs Improvement
Style: Black
Works okay for very light cuts but arms slip from setting even with very strong torque on handles. Needs a second hinged vertical support in front with roller arms spanning both uprights.

I've used it many times for turning baseball bats. I don't use it all the time, but it does come in very useful for cupping the end of the bat.

  • Would probably do the job it was designed fot
Style: Yellow
This rest appears to be exactly the same as several others being offered on Amazon under various Chinese names. It's a simple device and looks to be pretty well made. Personally I'd prefer a 'ring' rest because the radial arms would better withstand the pressures exerted by the rotating workpiece. That said, there's no apparent reason why this rest shouldn't do okay in light to moderate usage. Set-up properly and tightened securely it should stabilize longer and smaller diameter turnings. It's all metal and would appear to offer enough flexibility to be utilized on almost any wood lathe. Unfortunately I must admit that I can't substantiate any of these statements from immediate personal use as I simply have no wood turning projects under consideration at this time and it's unlikely I'd require a steady rest even if I did. Like many tools in a fairly well equiped workshop, a steady rest is only something you need occasionally and wished that you had when that rare occasion should arise. If you have a lathe and do a bit of turning now and then, you'll eventually need a steady rest and this one's no better or worse than any of it's nearly identical competitor's. Final note: it does come with several sheets of 100 grit wet or dry sand paper that's probably good for something. Unfortunately it's not an abrasive I'd ever consider using for sanding on a lathe. ... show more

The media could not be loaded. I needed something that would help to remove, re-tip and install and form cue tips. This is an experiment and I am happy with the result. This is phase 1.
