  • "War of the Gods" is a top-notch classic.
I'm glad I've bought a Wonder Woman graphic novel because with the success of the movie "Wonder Woman" & a sequel already in development, people can't stop talking about Wonder Woman. She's the savior of the DC Extended Universe and "War of the Gods" graphic novel will tell you why. "War of the Gods" was one of Wonder Woman's classic story arcs of the 90s and it pits Wonder Woman against the evil sorceress Circe & the gods. Wonder Woman seeks help from Batman, Robin, Superman, Captain Marvel, the Suicide Squad, Hawkman, Hawkgirl & every superheroes to aid her in her battle to save the universe. It is obvious that "War of the Gods" was release the same year as Marvel's epic story arc "The Infinity Gauntlet". This a great graphic novel. I love me some Wonder Woman. She's one of my favorite superheroes and "War of the Gods" is a top-notch classic. ... show more

  • I Now Have A Better Understanding Of The Story
When I first read this story when it was in single issues in 1991, I didn't get it. The collected addition filled in a lot of gaps for me by adding the tie in Wonder Woman issues. When I first got interested in the story initially in 1991, I was just drawn in that it was tied in with George Perez and maybe the fact that he didn't handle the art chores back then maybe fueled my dislike of the story, but now seeing that George at the time was writer of the core Wonder Woman book at the time makes the story more likable to me. ... show more

  • Best edition
I already had the War of the Gods partially included in the Wonder Woman omnibus, so was hesitant to get this one. I didn't regret it, though: it's very complete and well organized. Not all episodes are of the same quality, but it was great to read the whole crossover as it was intended to be.

  • 1991 Wonder Woman Event
Flawed crossover event that was originally published in late summer of 1991 to increase interest and sales for Wonder Woman. It was poorly received then and though nostalgic to read now, it has not aged well. This edition covers the four issue War mini-series as well as five issues of WW that had the War banner. The plot does establish Circe as a major threat for Wonder Woman that she had not been before. Through relics of ancient power she enflames the Roman gods to declare war upon the Greek Olympian Gods. Apparently to harness all the god energies to make herself Goddess Supreme. However, it is never explained how the two pantheons seem not to really know much about each other or that the Roman Olympians have been unknown to the DC Universe until now. The four chapters of War have many instances where it gets chaotic because those scenes are resolved in other titles. A few pages of text at the beginning or end could have been helpful to a reader. The tie-in issues of Wonder Woman's title (58-62) have very little in regard to the overall story and can be easily skimmed or just ignored. The art of the four War chapters varies drastically from detailed to barely finished and back again. War of the Gods is good for the Wonder Woman collector since the story has been unavailable in this format for a long time. Even for someone with knowledge of the characters and overall DC continuity of the time, it could be an okay but difficult read through. Two stars because it could have been more of a look back at DC's attempt at a Wonder Woman driven event rather than the five issues of WW wasting space in the book. ... show more

  • A shotgun wedding of excellent artwork and an incomprehensible narrative
"Wonder Woman: War of the Gods" aims for the epic, but ends up merely incomprehensible. Writer/artist George Perez intended to honor the Amazon Princess' 50th anniversary in 1991 with a complicated storyline in which the ancient Greek gods wage war with Roman gods. While that's going on, gods from ancient Egypt, Africa, Babylon, pre-Christian Scandinavia and even Thanagar (homeworld of superheroes Hawkman and Hawkwoman) are fighting to remake Earth in their respective images-and, of course, it's up to Wonder Woman and the rest of DC's heroes to stop all the mayhem. This being comics, they don't succeed until said mayhem has unfolded on page after page of this collection, which includes the four issues of the "WOTG" miniseries and issues #58-#62 of Wonder Woman's own ongoing monthly series. A nine-issue collection is nothing to sneeze at, but "WOTG" was a 25-part series which included issues of other ongoing titles, so the reader is getting only part of the whole, which is not only disappointing, but also one of the factors in this book's incomprehensibility. Another problem is that the story builds on material DC Comics has yet to collect in either paperback or hardcover. "WOTG" was set up in eight prior WW issues, starting with #50, in which the Amazons reveal their existence to the world. (The newest hardcover ends with issue #45; the newest paperback, with issue #24.) Circe, this collection's villain, then frames the Amazons for a series of thefts of various artifacts, all of which included murder. Some Amazons are arrested, and Queen Hippolyta goes missing. When those aforementioned eight issues are collected, this story may make more sense to readers who feel like they've dropped into the middle of something, but aren't sure exactly what. Circe's ultimate goal is to destroy the Earth goddess Gaea, because...well, because she's the big bad and doing things like framing innocents for robbery and murder and starting wars is what big bads do. Perez never explains her motivations, hence more incomprehensibility. But characters' muddled motives were just one of many issues Perez faced in writing this series. DC editorial took characters they'd promised him away for use in another company-wide crossover, "Armageddon 2001." They should have taken more; so many heroes appear that Wonder Woman feels like a guest star wandering through what's intended to be her story. Editorial should have also blue-penciled some words. With the exceptions of Batman and Lobo, everyone in this story-including the omniscient narrator, who's given to telling what's being shown in individual panels-is given to lengthy speeches that make them sound like Captain James T. Kirk at his speechifying best. If "WOTG" is a chore to read, it's at least lovely to look at. Perez provides layouts for the miniseries, with Cynthia Martin and Russell Braun creating the finished artwork, and his eye for epic battles and cosmic wonders that's the hallmark of his prior work on "New Teen Titans," "Crisis on Infinite Earths" and his initial "WW" issues is as sharp as ever, and sharper than his writing. In addition, Jill Thompson ("Wonder Woman: The True Amazon") illustrates the chapters from WW's own series, providing both layouts and art that fit the epic story Perez is trying to tell. Though Perez's reach exceeded his grasp, his love for Wonder Woman shines through both the excellent artwork and the convoluted narrative. If one purchases "WOTG," I recommend waiting to read it until DC has collected the entirety of Perez's run with the character. UPDATE: DC Comics is collecting all of the "War of the Gods"-era Wonder Woman adventures (issues #46-62), plus "WOTG" itself (again) in the forthcoming third and final volume of its "Wonder Woman Omnibus by George Perez" series. This should resolve some of the narrative issues I described above. ... show more
