  • Excellent reception, easy to install.
Style: 45 Mile Range Pattern Name: Antenna
I had been considering cutting the cord for several years. I consulted with antenna experts on a television discussion website that I wrote articles for. I wrote about technology and the film/TV market. The antenna guys lived and breather free over the air TV. What did I learn? Basically a larger antenna, placed as high as I could get it, aimed at the broadcast antennas works the best. Yes, there is a LOT of technical discussion and situations that can effect reception. Overall I knew I needed a VHT/UHF antenna mounted outside my house. There is no such thing as a "digital" or "HD" antenna. I had previously experimented with a small indoor antenna. It would pick up a couple of channels depending where I pointed it. If I turned it an inch or two I would lose those channels and pick up a different channel. Frustration! I tried another antenna in my attic. It worked slightly better but not much. For my location, about 50 miles north of Phila, I needed a good old fashioned antenna...the kind my grandparents used in the sixties. Getting to the point you want to know...did it work? Yes! I receive about 40 channels. I am able to get the major networks, two different PBS stations and sub-channels, retro TV stations, movie stations, etc, etc. A few channels are unreliable but nothing I need to have. I also pick up channels that are broadcast from the north, opposite from where the antenna is pointing. The HD channels are beautiful and stable. The digital surround sound is processed through my home theater. I am completely satisfied! Here is a tip. I had a satellite dish mounted to my house, up high. I removed the dish and mounted the antenna to the dish mounting pole. It works perfectly as a mount. If you don't have a similar mounting point, I would get the mounting kit. I used one of the existing satellite coax cables as my antenna feed since the coax was already wired into my house. You can use your cable TV cable coax the same way. What would I do next? I learned that you can use a second antenna, pointed in a different direction, to pull in more channels. The two antenna signals can be combined with an adapter (from Amazon) to a single coax cable. Consider this if you really want to get everything you can from the air. One final note. I have been told to avoid any kind of supplemental signal amplifier. The logic is the digital TV signal is either good or it is bad. You either get the channel or you don't. Amplifiers worked with old fashioned broadcast signals where you would get snow or ghosting. Check this out from an antenna manufacturer. "A mast or antenna-mounted amplifier (preamp) is used primarily to overcome the loss in the coaxial cable between the antenna and the TV set. In areas distant from TV transmitters, overcoming this loss is necessary since the signals are already weak. In areas close to TV transmitters, a preamplifier is usually not needed, and can actually cause problems as it may cause the signal levels to be too high." I would opt out of amplifiers and go for the larger antenna, mounted outside, as high as possible. May the signal be with you! ... show more

  • Outstanding performance at a reasonable price with HD7694P antenna
Style: 45 Mile Range Pattern Name: Antenna
I’m very impressed by the ability of the Winegard HD7694P antenna to capture and deliver a stable signal from a weak, low-power TV station within the claimed 45-mile range. There is one low-power UHF TV station at our location near Houston, TX that is extremely difficult to receive even though the transmitter tower is only 26 miles away. It was necessary to test four different High-VHF/UHF antennas to get a workable solution. The antennas tested included an omni-directional indoor flat panel antenna from 1byone (50 mile range), and three directional antennas from Free Signal TV (Marathon model), Terk (HDTVAZ indoor model) and Winegard HD7694P. The Yagi-type antennas with a boom and parallel elements (Winegard and Terk) proved to be much better at capturing the weak signal. The other two antennas (1byone and Free Signal TV) and their preamplifiers were hopelessly inadequate for the demanding task and it turns out the FSTV antenna was ridiculously overpriced at four times the cost of the Winegard HD7694P sold by Amazon.com LLC. I was especially impressed that the Winegard HD7694P antenna did not require a preamplifier to perform as well or better than the Terk antenna which is powered. I did install and test the Winegard LNA-200 Boost XT HDTV Preamplifier with the HD7694P antenna, but it did not improve the reception signal strength of the weak TV station in my situation (it actually degraded the performance). This was not entirely unexpected for my short 21-ft RG6 cable run to a single TV and likely no fault of the Winegard preamplifier. I also tested a RCA TVPRAMP1Z Preamplifier with the HD7694P antenna with similar poor results. For my situation, the signal from the one weak TV station is more stable and at maximum strength without a preamplifier in the circuit. The Winegard antenna delivers a very stable signal at low strength (4 bars of 10) for the eight subchannels of the one weak TV station without any pixelation or image drop-out. A full channel scan detected a total of 123 subchannels from 25 stations (both High-VHF and UHF) in the Houston, TX area at a distance of 26 miles on the same compass bearing. Signal strengths range from good to a majority excellent (5 to 10 bars). The overall performance of the Winegard HD7694P antenna is superb. The size of the Winegard HD7694P antenna, which is relatively compact for a Yagi configuration with boom and elements, makes it well suited for an attic installation where space is often limited. My antenna is mounted in the attic under a clay tile roof at an elevation of 33 feet above ground level. I’m extremely pleased with the Winegard HD7694P antenna and enthusiastically give it a rating of 5 Stars for price and performance. ... show more
