  • The PT didn't exhibit any strange behavior like the Mino
I own the Williams Sound PKT D1 EH Pocketalker Ultra Duo (I'll call it the PT in this review) and the Bellman and Symfon Mino. I thought it might be helpful to review the PT and make some comparisons to the Mino to help others who might be trying to decide between the two. 1. The PT has more gain than the Mino. i.e., it will amplify sounds to a REALLY loud level. But it has one drawback, the reason I only gave it 4 stars: it also has quite a bit of noise (hiss) when turned up very loud. I don't know why Williams didn't spend a few dollars more in their design and use a lower-noise preamp -- I'd have gladly paid an extra few dollars to have less noise. The Mino's circuitry is much quieter, but doesn't have as much gain (volume boost) as the PT. That said, you'll rarely if ever need more amplification than the Mino provides. 2. The PT is stable when amplifying sound in a loud room. In a room where music was being played, the Mino was totally unusable due to a lot of squealing and obnoxious noises that seemed to be due to instability in the circuitry, not due to acoustic feedback. However, in a situation with normal conversational levels, the Mino didn't have that problem. The PT didn't exhibit any strange behavior like the Mino, no matter what the noise level in the room was. 3. The Mino seems to do more processing of the sound for clarity than the PT. Voices in the Mino seem slightly less natural-sounding than in the PT, but this may make it a little easier to discern individual words for some who have extreme hearing loss (mine is moderate, and the PT is easier for me to understand.) Although they have a lot more volume, neither of these units is as natural-sounding as a set of good hearing aids. Which aren't as natural-sounding as a set of good ears... 4. The PT has replaceable batteries where the Mino has a rechargeable battery that is not user replaceable. I much prefer the former, but that's a personal choice. The batteries of the Mino lasted about 4 or 5 hours before needing a recharge. I've used the PT for about 4 hours and the two AAA alkaline batteries still test at 100% on a ZTS tester. 5. If you use either of these units with long cables, where the microphone and the earphones are quite a distance apart, you can ignore this paragraph; if you use them like I do, with the unit clipped to the front of your shirt and the mic in the unit, then I highly recommend using a good set of in-ear buds that seal well in the ear canal to avoid problems with acoustic feedback (squealing). I tried them with a quality set of open-air headphones and could not get much volume at all without feedback. Even over-the-ear closed headphones didn't work very well, nor did the little foam-covered earbuds like what comes with the PT. The best I've found are some Shure earbuds (model unknown, sorry) that cost about $50, because the sound is crisp and clear, with fairly light, tight bass response (you don't need a lot of bass when the goal is clarity of speech.) 6. Warning: if you use this unit clipped to the front of your shirt, that loud siren you just heard, that nobody else seems to have heard, was your stomach growling... don't ask how I know. Overall, even with the hiss problem in the Williams PT, I prefer it to the Bellman Mino, and it's about half the price. I hope this helps. ... show more

  • Good Product for hard of hearing!
Update: the seller was instrumental in assisting me get my issue resolved with manufacturer. Not sure what happened with the unit but it works for my elderly mother. Manufacturer is sending an upgraded version which i appreciate. Bought for elderly mother. She enjoyed it and was using it daily. One month and 2 weeks after purchase stopped working, unit gets hot and smell of smoke. Seller asking that I contact the manufacturer for the warranty. Williams sound does not pick up the phone states office is closed (even though I am calling during business hours). Left message, and have not heard from them. This unit cost $170 with taxes and seller quoting policy versus handling the situation and dealing with the manufature themselves. Very dissatisfied, do not use this company time another company that makes the same device. Contacted Amazon customer support the representative advised me that since they have a good relationship with the seller, I would probably get a new one sent to me. The representative contacted the seller but they were closed at the time. Kudos to the seller for assisting with my warranty issue. ... show more

  • My grandma loves it!
I got this for my grandma after her hospital stay because she loved the one she had while she was an inpatient and said she wanted one at home. So I found this one and decided to try it out and boy does she love it. She can now hear the tv clearly I don’t have to scream and yell for her to hear me when I’m speaking. She’s very hard of hearing so this makes all her doctors appointments so much smoother. I love that it comes with a cord to extend the microphone so I can place it next to the tv for her to hear it more clearly and it works great for when she has visits from family and her doctors/nurses. If you have a relative whose hard of hearing this is the best option and all it takes is 2 batteries. ... show more

  • GET THIS!!!! If you have an elderly relative or friend who won't go for a hearing aid, try this.
So far our impressions of this little hearing assist are that it is AWESOME. That said we both hear fine and got this as a gift for a loved one. A slightly stubborn person who has used cheaper, quick to break, versions of this style of hearing assist in the past. However after her third or fourth or maybe even fifth one broke (some 20.00 unit she was picking up some where, NOT this) we decided to do some research. Amazon reviews pointed us in the direction of this device. What WE liked, as her guests, we liked the idea of a longer microphone cord option so that the person she has the most trouble of hearing could possibly just set it by them or even hold it. Also at restaurant tables she can't hear anything so, while sad, we have all become used to just talking around her because she can't hear....frustrating for all parties involved. We haven't tested this yet but I assume that she could pass the corded mic about the table to hear people.....it may not be the most convenient option but as I mentioned there's a bit of stubbornness involved that means going to get fitted for a hearing aid is OUT OF THE QUESTION (sigh) She started to declare her hearing was just gone and gave up on replacing her little 20 dollar units that, while breaking quickly, DID let her hear...also batteries were mysteriously never charged or purchased... I also liked that this unit has a degree of control over the sound beyond volume. I tested it listening to my husband's voice, who is the hardest for her to hear, and pre-set it to what made it sound sharpest and clearest before we gifted her this unit. Long story made a wee bit shorter...it worked! She popped the ear buds in (we purchased some more comfortable ones), fiddled with volume a bit and could hear us all well enough to actually converse. If you do something like this for a loved one I suggest doing as we did and purchasing a ginormous pack of the Amazon basics AAA batteries that are required to go along with it. If it works for your loved one at all removing that apparently insurmountable hassle of battery maintenance with recharging etc can go a long way I suspect towards easing tensions and allowing them the freedom to just pop a new set in when ever they need. I would like to point out that I did as another reviewer (I think the one voted most helpful in this item's feedback) and purchased some panasonic ear buds, a noise canceling lavalier mic for another mic option and the little connector thingy. As I said check out their in depth review, their suggested additional purchases were spot on. I removed all the extra packaging, tidied the cords and presented it all in a nice box for her, so she can keep all her ear assist goodies in one place. Anyways, WORTH THE MONEY. We actually suggested, months ago, she look in to getting this unit but as I mentioned there was some degree of stubborness...a sort of giving up/acceptance that she was now "deaf" If it had not worked out, well...it's worth the small investment to help. We suspected she could make use of it and she was delighted with it. I'll post an update if she shares any long term notes on her personal experience with the whole thing. So far though, pretty great for a right out of the box device. As I said, it was the first time in agggges that we talked and she heard and talked back and made for a lively, entertaining get together. She used the lavalier mic option we added to this and it has a 3 foot cord and we just popped it in the middle of the kitchen table and she apparently heard and acted and responded as if she could hear all 3 of us sitting there with her! Success!!!! We kind of feel..and this is regular hearing persons point of view so maybe take it with a large grain of salt, that this sort of pocketalker hearing assist unit could be superior for some one with a hearing disadvantage as compared to a traditional hearing aid. The sort that goes in/behind the ear. In that sound waves have to go in the ear and this unit has a corded mic, what could be better for increasing the chances of hearing correctly than having the option of poking a mic right by a person's mouth, rather than have their sound waves carry to your ear? I realize this doesn't fit every one's situation, and having a long cord may not be convenient but it's certainly not as inconvenient and heart breaking as just NOT hearing...... Edit: Here is the list of additional items I purchased (based on a helpful reviewer's suggestion) as well as which batteries, to go with the pockettalker: Olympus ME-52W Noise Canceling Microphone Panasonic RPHJE120S In-Ear Headphone, Silver C2G / Cables to Go 03174 3.5mm Stereo Female to 3.5mm Mono Male Adapter AmazonBasics AAA Performance Alkaline Batteries (36-Pack) I got them all on Amazon at once so I'd have a complete kit. They work great with this unit. The ear buds especially are really nice. ... show more
