  • it's a great little machine
Yes.... My son loves it!! It works very well no issues, no problems, it's a great little machine!!

  • It works, but has some issues
The Good: • Very compact vertical steam engine, does take up a large footprint • It runs fast and powerful • Only needs one fuel tab to run Other thoughts: • What is really odd is that I ordered this January 8th 2017 and just a week later on the 14th the amazon stock picture has changed and shows the model with a metal roof above the pipe? I wonder if they just changed it because one of my complaints would be that they use this plastic one that literally melts and bubbles from the heat and now is useless. • Very difficult to judge water level, can barely see in those two micro sized windows. Best to just measure out the water each time • It does spray a significant amount of water/steam out the side • No pressure control • No whistle • Can’t really power anything else with this model • Piston leaks water out • Within the burner, they mounted the tray on a bit of an angle making it hard to slide …a bit sloppy on manufacturing this The Bottom Line: For the cost, it’s not that bad, but certainly better models out there in the Wilesco line up. It’s one of the better “looking” pieces though. I would recommend the Jensen model 75 which is more bullet proof and reliable. However Wilesco makes a similar one that I have seen as well which looks the same. ... show more

  • Wilesco D3
Love it! Wilesco Quality... Made in Germany! This is a great little steam engine. Runs smooth and can run up to 15 mins on a full tank 30-40ml of water.

  • Very reliable steam engine model!
It is very easy to set up and run, though the small roof over the stack that is comes with is actually a high temp resistant black plastic.

  • Nice model
Very nice engine. Runs very well. Excellent model to learn thermodynamics. It is easy to assembly and easy to use.

  • poor performance
It was not what was pictured, it made steam sporadically, It was frustrating to use. the special fuel should have came with it.

  • Wilesco D3 - not their best model
If you want a small engine to watch (not enough power to run anything), get the D2, which really works quite nicely. This one ran sporadically, required a bit of remachining to get it to run at all - the pivot screw was drilled and installed crooked and flywheel crank was bent wrong, so piston case bound up on part of cycle, released steam through pivot point hole on other. Sight glasses almost useless - you have to tip it (while hot) to see where water is as they get bubble-blocked - should have used an external sightglass tube like real boilers. Runs very short time and sporadically because of condensation in the overly long tube, so only runs a few seconds at a time till it has to heat up again to be able to run on its own. Out of the about 7 minutes on a fuel tab, I doubt we got 30 seconds of it running on its own. Flywheel NOT grooved - but does not matter - barely runs by itself, much less drive anything. Lasts about 7 minutes on a fuel tab, which is also about how long water in boiler takes to get down to refill point. Ours came with a packge of, as I recall, 20 fuel tabs, unlike other comment saying they got no fuel with it. Also had both a grease and oil tubes in it with no instructions about which to use where - use only the thin oil - grease too thick for this engine, would not be able to run at all if greased. Fuel tray flimsy and its too tight - likely to damage it putting in and taking out. Believe the instructions when it says the fuel tabs stink when they go out - definitely take outdoors before blowing out, which is a bit of a fire hazard if you don't take out on a piepan or such, because it drips when hot. Stinks like rancid fish oil when blown out - maybe cod oil ? Use on a metal pie pan or plate, because water spurts all over from the piton and pivot point - we also had to tighten tubing fittings to stop leakage there. This one should go back to the drawing boards. ... show more
