  • Wiha 6pc PocketMax Insulated Driver
I own a lot of Wiha products, so I was excited to get a chance to review one of their latest products. The Pocket Max is a VDE insulated bitholder screwdriver handle with 5 Wiha slim insulated VDE bits (PH1, PH2, Robinson #2, as well as a 0.6x3.5mm and 1.2x6.5mm flat blade bits). The driver and bits are rated for up to 1000v. The handle uses Wiha's classic shape which should be familiar to anyone who has used one of their full size drivers in the past. The included bits are up to the usual Wiha standards. In my opinion, Wiha makes some of the best bits and screwdrivers in the industry, with particular attention paid to the tip geometry. They fit well and are usually one of the last brands to cam out when tested. As I said, I'm a Wiha fan. But I do have some issues with this driver. The main one is the bit storage. The bits are stored in the handle in a completely separate carrier that is held in with a magnet at its tip. To swap a bit, you remote the entire "magazine" from the handle. I was able to shake the magazine lose from the handle, but it took quite a bit of force. But this design does mean that it's entirely possible to lose the bit holder. This design does have one advantage though: The tailcap of the handle is free-spinning. A nice feature in a full-size screwdriver. The other issue I have is the bit magazine only holds 4 of the 5 included bits. For a driver called the "Pocket Max" and marketed on their website as being "Perfectly pocket-sized! ", I would have liked to see all the bits stored in the handle. As it is, you can pocket it comfortably with 4 bits (leaving one at home), but with 5 you will have 2 inches of pointy bit sticking down in your pocket. Not ideal. Finally, there is a bit of wobble in the bits when they are seated in the driver, but it is minimal and should not have any real-world effect on its use. The screwdriver is made in Germany according to the box, and I believe most of Wiha's VDE line of screwdrivers are still manufactured in their German facilities. ... show more

  • Nice set and typical Wiha quality
I'm a big Wiha fan and this is a really nice kit. I have their regular size insulated screwdriver set with the interchangeable blades (not the slimline version). This isn't quite a stubby version since the handle is the regular size but the blades are a bit shorter and they are slim which is great for DIN rail stuff. The full-size handle with the short blades is a bit weird at first but it does the job. They've done a good job of tucking the blades into the handle without making it too chunky but it would have been nice if you could store all of the blades in the back instead of just 4 so it could be packed away or carried as just the handle, you could always leave your least favourite blade at home but it would be nice if all 5 could fit into the handle. This design makes it great for a travel kit, I actually didn't measure it full length with a blade installed but it would definitely be under the TSA carry on size with no blades attached. The blade storage is just held in by a magnet which is nice and easy to open, it feels pretty positive locking but I did notice that when I opened the box it had come disconnected so it remains to be seen how reliably that stays closed in a tool bag. The regular interchangeable blade kit uses a blade locking mechanism that is super nice, you pull back on the front of the driver and it releases the blade, release it to lock the blade. This version just uses an o-ring as a friction fit to keep the blade in. It's fine but a bit stiff to take in and out, it might loosen over time I guess. Overall this is a Wiha quality tool so you can't really go wrong, you're definitely not getting garbage, at the price point though there are some alternatives especially you don't need the full insulation. ... show more

  • Fantastic little pocket screwdriver, outrageous price
I've been using this screwdriver at work. It fits fasteners as good as any screwdriver I've used and doesn't easily ramp out. Changing bits is a chore though. As good as this little guy is, I can't get past the high price tag.

  • Flex on the other electricians.
I LOVE German engineering and manufacturePorsche/Mercedes/BMW automobiles, Zeiss optics, Rotring pencils, Hilti power tools, Bosch heavy equipment. Their products all speak to a dedication to unparalleled precision and craftsmanship. And, in general, such quality commands a premium price. This insulated Schraubendreher, er, screwdriver is no different. Bits aren't held in place with ball bearings or a metal C-ring, but with a little bit of friction from an O-ring and... atmospheric pressure. Now, I'm not saying it's a LOT of pressure, but you hear a satisfying "THOK" when removing the active bit, indicative of a vacuum. It's enough to keep the bit securely in position without worry that a screw is going to yank out. The inactive bits, meanwhile, are held firmly in storage beneath the butt cap by a pair of neodymium magnets. And though the cap spins freely, it's not going to fly out and scatter bits everywhere if you drop the tool (which will be your own fault, because it fits quite comfortably in the hand). I gave it an inaugural test last night, screwing a connector onto a length of 1/2" conduit. As I applied the final bit of torque, feeling the set screw dig in, I suddenly felt a warm pressure build up at the base of my rib cage. It rolled upward, filling my chest and lungs, proceeded through my throat like a victor on the way to meet his destiny, and finally erupted from my mouth with a shout of, "Geil! Fantastisch!" Until that moment, I didn't even KNOW German; it's THAT GOOD. You're already a masterful electrician and all the other wire jockeys know it. But to make them REALLY jealous, you need a Wiha Pocket Max screwdriver in your tool belt. It's a serious flex. ... show more
