  • 4.0 out of 5 stars Great System for larger homes
I have now installed these in two homes... (Two sets of three) Pros: Fast easy setup, Coverage, and support of a large number of connected devices, large bandwidth. Cons: Lack of firewall. The first thing I was impressed with was the ease of installation. That was a blessing and a curse for me because I am a technical person and was expecting a 'standard' setup procedure that just was not there. More on that later. Second, the coverage and speed are great. Both homes have ‘Spectrum’ cable for internet access, and both had different modem versions. They both have 200MB+ WiFi now. Larger home has 28 devices connected. There are no antennas sticking out all over but they seem to not be needed on the outside. Very clean look. Each cube has a single little led status light on top (excellent for a quick status check but not bright enough to notice in a bedroom at night if not looking.) Back to the setup… For those wondering, you do not connect/configure this network like a ‘standard’ router. You must use a smartphone app. There is no built-in interface. That through me off for a second but I downloaded the app and followed the simple directions. Basically, you plug in one cube (power and Wan cable from your modem) and then connect directly to the Rock Space cube WiFi (default name and password on bottom of cube) with your phone. Once connected, provide a name and password for the new network (I used the exact same name and password from the old router so I would not have to reconfigure all the devices already on the old network). It does a little validation and your done as far as configuring your new network. Next, all you do is find a location for the other two cubes. Space each of them out so that the hole house is covered. I was able to place them about 200 feet apart. Just plug in the power cable and that’s it. The additional cubes will self-configure based on the information you set in the first cube. Because I used the same wifi name and password from the old router, everything just reconnected to the new routers and I was done. I did one more step when I was done which was to use the app to upgrade the firmware. (Not required to do manually but I can’t help myself.) I guess the lack of being able to ‘see’ everything the router is doing in the simple setup app throws me off a bit. Also, when changing a setting, there is no real ‘feedback’ in the app letting me know the change is applied etc. Why only 4 Stars? My biggest and only real gripe about this system is it’s lack of a built in firewall. There are external firewalls that can be purchased but many of them do not support Mesh networks yet. I will update this review when I find a firewall solution. In my own home I am still using an older Asus AMesh system for this reason. ... show more

  • 5.0 out of 5 stars It's an easy setup, and it works just as it claims!
Simply put, this system does what it says it will. No problems, not complications, no misleading info. This is my first mesh system install and it really couldn't have gone smoother. My experience so far has been fantastic and I would recommend this system to anyone needing to fill in WiFi dead spots or just wants better coverage and easier control over their network. My environment: - Needed to replace an ASUS RT-AC87U AC2400 due to a dying antenna causing coverage issues. - 4 Story house with just over 1,000 feet per floor, 4000ish total sq feet. - Home office on 1st floor, media room on 4th floor, and 30ish ‘smart’ devices spread between them. - Shentel Cable service @ 150mbps. - ISP’s modem setup as a simple bridge, using the Rock Space mesh as a wireless gateway. - A variety of devices, including Xbox Ones, iPhones, iPads, Alexa & Dots, Ring products, Smart Thermostats, etc… What I can confirm from my install: - The app is really user friendly and packs a lot of features & options. I really like being able to configure/monitor/adjust my network from my Phone instead of having to connect a laptop to my gateway. - Total setup for 3 nodes took about 20 minutes, but most of that was me walking to different floors and waiting for them to auto-sync with the main gateway. - When setting up the first gateway node, it asked me if I wanted to use a different SSID than it's default (marked on bottom of nodes) so I named it the exact same as my old network and gave it the exact same password. The hope was that I wouldn't have to reconfigure 30ish smart devices and instead, they would reconnect automatically once the network was visible again. Surprisingly, this worked just as I had hoped!!! Once all of the nodes were connected and I restarted the network, everything in the house reconnected to the closest node. I had zero connectivity issues. None. I'm still kind of shocked that it worked so easily. - I placed one node by the ISP’s modem on the 2nd floor, one node in the basement, and the last one on the 3rd floor. These 3 nodes covered all 4 floors, from top to bottom with no dead spots. - It’s a dual band system with 3 separate nodes but still only shows as a single SSID. I no longer need to choose between the 2G and 5G, the mesh does that automatically depending on the which has the strongest signal. - I have 2G and 2G/5G devices and they all connected perfectly. I saw an "Assistant" option in the app to force it to 2G while connecting, but I didn't have to use it. The app shows you which node each device is connected to, and which band each device is using. - I'm using port forwarding within the app for 2 gaming systems and both are working as expected. - After a few days, I thought I'd add another node to the 4th floor just because it had the least coverage of the floors. Unfortunately though, I wasn't able to find individual nodes for sale anywhere so I had to buy an entire new 3 piece set. Adding another node was as simple as clicking "Add a node" in the app, then scanning the 2D barcode on the bottom of the new node. I ended up adding a 5th node so I could treat it as a direct cable point (as a switch), but I only did it because I had an ‘extra’…it really wasn't needed. My only complaint: - As far as I can tell, you can’t purchase single nodes anywhere. They only come in sets of 3. If you need/want to add another node, you’ll need to shell out big bucks again for a complete second system. I hope this helps someone out there that may be on the fence! ... show more
