  • UPDATED ->House is nice. Customer support nonexistent
Style: Paper Tubes
UPDATE 2023: After I posted my review here, Whitehorse reached out to me. Apparently my emails went to their SPAM folder, and they were unaware of my issues and concerns. They’ve since sent me the PDF I was after and entered my pic into their contest. They’ve also made offers to ‘make it right’ due to their lack of attention and response initially. This bumps up my rating of their customer service, and since I’d said that was the only thing causing a star demerit, I’ve bumped it up now to 5. I hope they’ll be better checking their SPAM folder going forward. As for bees, well I still have lit ‘Welcome’ and ‘Vacancy’ signs out (figuratively speaking of course. Bees don’t read to the best of my knowledge). I’ll just keep waiting to see if the wandering masons ultimately find it. ———— Original Review ——- I bought this little house in 2022. Got it hung up attached to a tree trunk. Had to do a little bit of modification as the cleat for hanging it assumes a flat surface, and a tree trunk isn't. Still, got it mounted, and just for good measure, I added a support wire from the front to the tree so it is impossible to fall. All good. The instructions included with the house said two things: 1. They were running a giveaway, and you had to go to a web address and upload pictures of your bee house to enter 2. There was supposed to be a PDF included or address to same with details on what you needed to do to attract Mason bees. You've got the new apartment, how do you let the kids know it's available? Well, giveaway page didn't have anywhere to respond for BEE house, just their other item, the BAT house. I uploaded pics anyway with the best method available to let them know they were there. There was no PDF with how to attract the bees in the box nor address provided to go and get it. I wrote WhiteHorse about both issues....confirming pics uploaded for their giveaway even though I couldn't click links to say they were for the BEE house and asked about the instructions for attracting bees to the new tenement. Crickets Well, I guess crickets at least woud have been nice. What I got was dead silence. No response. I wrote a few more times. No answer. Ever. The pretty little bee house has been hanging up out in the partially shaded yard for over a year now. Nary a bee has found his way fit to move in. It's an empty developer's nightmare...$ spent, no tenants. The house has survived all seasons (even though I know in California it's said we don't really HAVE seasons, but at least some cold and rain and sun) without issue. It's still hanging out there mocking me for being empty. Construction-wise, it's rock solid. Great little house. Customer support-wise, I can't recommend the purchase :( That knocked the review down one star. All WhiteHorse had to do was answer me once. Let me know where to look for bee attracting information and I'd be a happy camper. Instead, I feel they simply appreciated me buying the item and moved on to sell more. Customer support is NOT a trivial matter, so I'm rather disappointed in them. If you know all about Mason bees, then this will probably be a great item for you, but if you're a novice like me, maybe you should spend more time looking things up on the internet to inform yourself because the vendor won't. ... show more

  • A quaint and well constructed Mason Bee house
Style: Paper Tubes
We searched several different Mason Bee houses before deciding on the Whitehorse Mason Bee House. Once received - we were impressed by the overall construction and design of this house. We opted to outdoor wood stain our house and attached a single pressure treated 2x4 to the house for easy mounting - but yet easy to remove. We recently planted six (6) apple trees and situated our new bee house in close proximity to this little apple orchard in hopes of attracting these little pollinating bees come spring. Our bee house faces due East to catch the morning sun here in central PA. We also liked the replaceable cardboard tubes and the depth of the house at 6" with a roof overhang for weather protection. Overall - we are very pleased with this Whitehorse Mason Bee house and plan on purchasing some additional houses as well. ... show more

  • Proper style for mason bees
Style: Paper Tubes
I am on my 4th season of assisting the little mason bees, but my old house (different brand) feel, apart, so this house was quickly ordered and the tubes were transferred. Here’s what I’ve found: the mason bees prefer the reed style tubes, but if you do not provide those as an option, they will adjust to the cardboard tubes with liners. (The reeds should not be used more than one season unless they are thoroughly cleaned with a brush and vacuumed, due to parasites). This house came with a cleat for mounting, and that’s a very good idea. The included screws could be a bit more substantial, but suffice. The cedar smells good and there are no knots or bad sections. I expect this house to last 4 years, or so. Upon opening the box, I was greeted with an ad: post a picture of the house and be entered in drawings to receive a free one. My phone responded that the QR code led to a bad link. When I entered it manually, it worked—- or did it? It’s a Facebook thing, and activation required installing messenger. That’s not going to happen and I will not be receiving any free products. Facebook. Really? I mean really? ... show more

  • Great construction, terrible reed tubes
Style: Bamboo Tubes
Very fine wood and construction of the house, as others have pointed out. I did not understand that it is untreated wood, and haven't determined the best way to prepare it for the weather. However, as others have pointed out, many of the 56 reed tubes are mostly unusable. Only 14 are fully six inches long, and appropriate diameter for mason bees. Another 5 are nearly six inches long, but only four of those are larger enough diameter for mason bees. One is closed off because a joint is at each end. 10 are barely three inches of usable tube interior because of where the joint is. I'll get four inches of interior length from another 9, but half of those have too small diameter for mason bees (and some are too small even for leafcutter bees). Of the 8 that are a full six inches long, about half may work for leafcutter bees, but several are not even 4 cm diameter needed for those bees. I'm glad I separately purchased some of the cardboard/paper tubes for mason bees, as I consider 14 reeds to be useless for mason bees, 14 definitely should work, 14 may work, and maybe I am wrong about the remaining reeds that appear too narrow and too short? ... show more
