  • Great desk, but gave us a few problems.
Size: 55 INCH Color: Rustic Brown
This desk (rustic brown color) is great for the purpose we bought it for however, it could be much better quality. I had bought a similar one about a year prior from a different company. It went together beautifully and was very solid, so I had high hopes for this bigger version of virtually the same desk, just a bit longer and with a monitor shelf. Needless to say, it did not go as smoothly as the first desk from the other company. 1) It was delivered with one corner dented and a scratch on the surface. When we opened the box, it appeared that the corner protector came off of said corner during shipping. Thankfully the dented corner wasn't that bad and we were able to have it be in a corner of the desk that met up with a wall and shelf (purchased separately) along it to create an L shape desk space, so it's not an eyesore. As for the scratch, it wasn't very deep, but deep enough to reveal the lighter wood underneath, so I just took a brown crayola marker, filled it in, and wiped away the excess. You honestly can't even tell it was there anymore. 2) While putting it together, we accidentally put the legs on opposite of what we needed, so we had to remove them and redo it. During this process, we had the desk on its side, sticking straight up in the air, resting on one set of legs that we had reattached. We finished attaching the other side's legs and pulled those legs towards us and downward to get the desk rightside up. We immediately had to stop. The legs on the ground almost snapped out of the desk top and we heard wood cracking. We used our 2 man/1 woman team to pick it up off the ground and rotate it carefully into an upright position. It seemed okay; no obvious looseness or wobbling, so we proceeded on. 3) One of the metal bars for the shelf didn't come with threads and the hole was much too big for any screws provided to thread into, so we had to improvise. We had already assembled everything except the last 2 bars for the upper shelf when we discovered it. Thankfully, after some brainstorming, we were able to figure out which bar on the upper shelf would have the least stress on it, put the bar in question in that place, and used longer screws that either were in the extras bag (which was much appreciated) or we just happened to have on hand to secure it in place. With the wood shelf, back wall, and other bars all in their place, it made a solid support for the bar that is not threaded in. Final thoughts... If you buy this desk, you'll likely be happy with it. When opening up the box, inspect everything! Not just the wood pieces like I used to. Look closely at each metal bar and thread the supplied screws in them to ensure you don't have a situation like we did. If you do, just be smart about placement and your desk should be structurally okay, or reach out to the seller to figure something out. Overall, we love the way the desk looks, but we will likely have to buy something of better quality in the coming years. ... show more

  • A real pain to assemble
First, it got here a day ahead of when I was told it would arrive. Good. I take everything out of the box, and match up the pieces and everything is there. I start the assembly process. All pictures with some words in the boxes. Not always clear as to what to do, but you figure it out. The left and right side you have to determine yourself as you do want your computer on the left or right. So I get that figured out from the upside down drawings. I think I'm doing ok. So, now the desktop slab is upside down on the floor and I have to attach the metal box structure. There are 4 holes, but only 3 on each side have the white plastic piece that the screws bite into. But, hey, there's a spare parts bag and they have 2 in there. Yippee. I bang them in and attach the box structure and then flip the whole unit right side up so I can now attach the top pieces. So, they show a screw going through the metal piece and then into the desk slab. But there's no hole available. After a few minutes closely, like really closely, examining the drawing, one sees that back on a previous step, you only screw in 3 screws to attach the metal box structures. Yes, those holes that didn't have the white plastic pieces don't get them, as the long screw goes through the piece above the desk and then through the box structure. WHY DON'T THEY WRITE THAT DOWN!!!???? It was easy to miss the fact that only 3 screws are used. Once you saw how they attach, you're thinking, ok, 4 screws per box. I had to stop to write this review while it was all fresh. So now I am going to flip the unit over and unscrew those 2 screws and then bang out the white plastic pieces so I can pick up from there. All in all, the assembly instructions leave a lot to desire. Maybe if they had made the pictures larger and on both sides of the paper, then the 3-hole attachment would have been easier to highlight. Also, the screws don't bite into the wood very easily. One struggles at times to ensure you're holding the screw and wood piece so you can turn it with your fingers before you use the allen wrench. They say 'keep part O parallel." Well, why not router out the shape so I can just put the piece into the wood and screw it in? That way they are sure to be parallel. At least I got that done ok, so the keyboard tray slides out fine. Ok, back to the assembly line. I'll let you know how it goes later today or tomorrow. So it's now tomorrow, and I have finished the project. What I discovered when I went back to finish things last night, is that I now need to attach the 2 cross-beams at the back of the unit. Well, well, I didn't attach one of the boxes such that the 2 holes in the legs were at the rear of the unit. Again, WHY DON'T THEY HIGHLIGHT THAT SITUATION???? Tell us, hey be sure to ensure those 2 holes are at the rear for each box. I got lucky with the other one. I got the rest of the unit put together without further mess-ups. So, some points to consider: it's a 4mm allen key and it has a standard head for insertion into the attachment piece of a screwdriver tool that has the removable heads so you can use the allen key in it; that way you get some leverage. Also, the rear shelf that has 2 positions be aware that if you use the lower level, you will have to use their allen key to tighten the screws when you're done, as there is no space otherwise. Doable, but a pain. I am hoping that its actual use as a desk will work out. That set up will be in the next few days. ... show more
