  • Great Book
Love the movie so i had to get the book. Loved it and great price. Received it on time.

  • Just as good as the movie in a different way...
It's hard to not compare this to the movie (which is one of my favorites though I generally stay away from chick lit). But this is a Great book! It was close enough to the movie that I didn't gat made at a total reimagining but different enought to keep me interested. Characters in the book that weren't in the movie were great and the character development of each was phenomenal. They were so well written that at some points I stopped picturing Natalie Portman, Stockard Channing and The cast and they became their own people which is rare when you've become so familiar with those faces in relation to the character. It shows just how well written and thought out the characters are. I enjoyed this so much I plan to read more of Oprahs picks and will be using this book for my book club and will have a movie night with the girls to follow. ... show more

  • Love this story!
This book is really good. If you have seen the movie it truly is very very similar. The conversations are taken right out of the book. There are a few...very few changes from the book to the movie. It is a great story and I loved it! Talk about unlucky sevens. An hour ago, seventeen-year-old, seven months pregnant Novalee Nation was heading for California with her boyfriend. Now she finds herself stranded at a Wal-Mart in Sequoyah, Oklahoma, with just $7.77 in change. But Novalee is about to discover hidden treasures in this small Southwest town--a group of down-to-earth, deeply caring people willing to help a homeless, jobless girl living secretly in a Wal-Mart. From Bible-thumping blue-haired Sister Thelma Husband to eccentric librarian Forney Hull who loves Novalee more than she loves herself, they are about to take her--and you, too--on a moving, funny, and unforgettable journey to . . . • Should Have Been Better
I really, really wanted this to be a great read. The storyline seemed to be a good one, the idea seemed like it would make a great story. But somewhere along the way, it just never lived up to that potential. Honestly, I thought this was going to be a good, entertaining story, but it just plodded along - never quite making it out of the "okay" rating pile. But just so you know, the novel and the writing was good enough to keep me reading all the way to the end. I'm not sorry that I read it, but when I finally ended the story, I couldn't help but think back on all of the ways the story could have been good, perhaps great. Just didn't make it. • A Celebration of the Spirit
I bought this book because I wanted to see how an author could realistically tell the story of a pregnant woman who is abandoned in a WalMart store and what happens to her after such a scary, disheartening event. I didn't think it could be done. I was wrong. Novalee Nation has absolutely nothing going for her when she is abandoned by the father of her baby while she's inside WalMart buying shoes to replace the ones that fell through the floor boards of the car she and her boyfriend were travelling in while she was napping. With a little luck and plenty of determination, Novalee not only gets through this experience, but she finds out just what she's made of in the process. She has no reason to expect anything but hard knocks considering how lightly those who should be closest to her play with and abuse her affection. But she has a way of reducing the most complicated circumstances to their simplest elements and works out a way not only to survive but find new people who are worthy of her love and respect. In depending on the kindess of strangers, she makes friends with a varied assortment of quirky characters who add to the charm of this book. The thing about this book is not only its heartwarming message about love, friendship, loyalty, and truth. It's that Billie Letts has made it all realistic and honest so that the message stays with you after the story is finished. Novalee Nation is a tribute to those who believe that God helps those who help themselves. ... show more

  • Worth the read
Where the Heart is by Billie Letts is an old book - and by that I mean it came out when I was in my sophomore year of high school, which was a very, very long time ago. The librarian, Mrs. Wu, would order books and she'd tell me to read them. I happily did, even when they were not to my taste, and even years later, I would come back to thinking about different aspects of the books, even those I had not liked. I am a writer by trade, and this blog is just something I do for funsies, for now. It gives me a break from the "have to" writing to write something I want - just blurt onto the page. Well, long story short, for one of my clients, something I was working on sparked a recollection of this book and I got a hankering to read it again. I ordered it, it showed up, I read it start to finish within about an hour. It's a light read. In spite of this, there's something about this book that will get you to thinking. And that "thing" - whatever it may be, changes depending on what your mindset is when you read it. Even all these decades later, it's still a good book. I'd put it in the same category as Fried Green Tomatoes - it's the same type of book. Different subject matter, different setting, but the same type of book, if that makes sense. It's a good book, but I can't much say more than that without giving something away. Going to write the review tonight (as I post the book reviews on Goodreads and Amazon in addition to here) - I found out something else. Turns out this one was made into a movie with a very, very young Natalie Portman - pre degree. And now I'm going to have to find that one to watch to see how well it holds up to the book. ... show more
