Description

A down on her luck pregnant teen finds herself living in a shopping center in this Oprah's Book Club selection that inspired the film starring Ashley Judd and Natalie Portman. Talk about unlucky sevens. An hour ago, seventeen-year- old, seven months pregnant Novalee Nation was heading for California with her boyfriend. Now she finds herself stranded at a Wal-Mart in Sequoyah, Oklahoma, with just $7.77 in change. But Novalee is about to discover hidden treasures in this small Southwest town–a group of down-to-earth, deeply caring people willing to help a homeless, jobless girl. From Bible-thumping blue-haired Sister Thelma Husband to eccentric librarian Forney Hull, they are about to take her–and you, too–on a moving, funny, and unforgettable journey. Read more

  • Just as good as the movie in a different way...
It's hard to not compare this to the movie (which is one of my favorites though I generally stay away from chick lit). But this is a Great book! It was close enough to the movie that I didn't gat made at a total reimagining but different enought to keep me interested. Characters in the book that weren't in the movie were great and the character development of each was phenomenal. They were so well written that at some points I stopped picturing Natalie Portman, Stockard Channing and The cast and they became their own people which is rare when you've become so familiar with those faces in relation to the character. It shows just how well written and thought out the characters are. I enjoyed this so much I plan to read more of Oprahs picks and will be using this book for my book club and will have a movie night with the girls to follow. ... show more

  • If you saw the Natalie Portman movie, this one is a little different.
I have seen the movie version of this book several times, and as always the case with books vs. movie versions, the book contained a lot more detail, scenarios, and characters. While I enjoyed the feel good story, I felt that it was a little unbelivable in the sense that everything seemed to fall neatly into place for Novalee, once she had her baby. So the book, contains very little conflict for her. For example, ALL of the town's characters were willing to drop everything and bend over backwards to help her and the baby, she was able to pick up the skill of photography, very quickly with little training, a man she barely knows, invites her to a candle lit, gourmet dinner just days after her arrival in Oklahoma, and there is really no build up to this, she finds a job instantly in town (the company president justs hands it over to her.), and she finds lodging for her and her baby right away. for those of you who have not read the book/seen the movie....the following contains spoilers, so you may not want to read this. The book differs from the movie..... Novalee's unlucky number is 7 and not 5 Lexie Coop is obese and not thin like Ashley Judd in the movie Lexie Coop does marry, but it is not to an Exterminator named Ernie, it is to a male nurse that she met at the hospital. There are several more neighbors and friends for Novalee than were seen in the movies Novalee takes a photography course at the local college Her and Forney do not marrry, In conclusion, this is a good feel good, chicken soup for the soul type book, where everything is going to be ok. A good light read, that will keep you engaged. ... show more

  • Love this story!
This book is really good. If you have seen the movie it truly is very very similar. The conversations are taken right out of the book. There are a few...very few changes from the book to the movie. It is a great story and I loved it! Talk about unlucky sevens. An hour ago, seventeen-year-old, seven months pregnant Novalee Nation was heading for California with her boyfriend. Now she finds herself stranded at a Wal-Mart in Sequoyah, Oklahoma, with just $7.77 in change. But Novalee is about to discover hidden treasures in this small Southwest town--a group of down-to-earth, deeply caring people willing to help a homeless, jobless girl living secretly in a Wal-Mart. From Bible-thumping blue-haired Sister Thelma Husband to eccentric librarian Forney Hull who loves Novalee more than she loves herself, they are about to take her--and you, too--on a moving, funny, and unforgettable journey to . . . • A Celebration of the Spirit
I bought this book because I wanted to see how an author could realistically tell the story of a pregnant woman who is abandoned in a WalMart store and what happens to her after such a scary, disheartening event. I didn't think it could be done. I was wrong. Novalee Nation has absolutely nothing going for her when she is abandoned by the father of her baby while she's inside WalMart buying shoes to replace the ones that fell through the floor boards of the car she and her boyfriend were travelling in while she was napping. With a little luck and plenty of determination, Novalee not only gets through this experience, but she finds out just what she's made of in the process. She has no reason to expect anything but hard knocks considering how lightly those who should be closest to her play with and abuse her affection. But she has a way of reducing the most complicated circumstances to their simplest elements and works out a way not only to survive but find new people who are worthy of her love and respect. In depending on the kindess of strangers, she makes friends with a varied assortment of quirky characters who add to the charm of this book. The thing about this book is not only its heartwarming message about love, friendship, loyalty, and truth. It's that Billie Letts has made it all realistic and honest so that the message stays with you after the story is finished. Novalee Nation is a tribute to those who believe that God helps those who help themselves. ... show more

  • Should Have Been Better
I really, really wanted this to be a great read. The storyline seemed to be a good one, the idea seemed like it would make a great story. But somewhere along the way, it just never lived up to that potential. Honestly, I thought this was going to be a good, entertaining story, but it just plodded along - never quite making it out of the "okay" rating pile. But just so you know, the novel and the writing was good enough to keep me reading all the way to the end. I'm not sorry that I read it, but when I finally ended the story, I couldn't help but think back on all of the ways the story could have been good, perhaps great. Just didn't make it.
