Description

It's the start of summer vacation, and poor Tony has just lost his grandfather. His father is deployed overseas, and his mother is raising him and his little brother all alone. But that's not what's bothering Tony. It's that his nana will be all alone in her small, rural home during the heat of summer, doing the yard work, the laundry, and all the things around the house, while mourning her husband. That won't sit for Tony. With his mother's permission he moves in with Nana for the summer. He rides his bike along the country roads, up and down the hills near Auburn Lake Preparatory Academy, trying to meet a nice girl, and making sure his nana is taken care of. And when the dead rise, and the flesh is consumed, and the living go a little bit mad. Poor little Tony will have to take care of Nana in a wholly different way. Read more

  • I struggle with rating this one
I am leaving 4 stars, and I have really struggled with that. First, Philbrook’s writing does not disappoint. These characters are - as usual - extremely well-developed and raw. The pacing is good, the dialogues are great - there is nothing wrong at all with the book, and it does fit very well into the AUD universe. However, the story was just too much for me. I couldn’t enjoy this one because it broke my heart in so many ways, and it really is all down-hill tragedy. I know this leads to the fact that the story is great, as it is realistic (what’s positive about freaking zombies?!? It should be filled with more straight up tragedies); but I need my zompoc to be lightened with something. All of Philbrook’s stories do this, except this one. So, I leave the 4-stars because I feel safe doing so, knowing that any of Philbrook’s fans who are reading this far into his universe won’t even pay attention to the ratings - his stuff is great, and I will continue to devour all of it. But the story just leaves me feeling so upset. Side note - the little piece on Edison is fun(ish). Sorry Chris, off to read the next one! ... show more

  • Poor Hungry Nana.....
THE SHED Chris Philbrook is at his copious best with this short story, from describing the drops of puss plopping on the kitchen floor to Nana's dentures flinging from her mouth. Having a warped sense of humor, I found this story kinda funny in a gory, zombie apoc sort of way. It's a great addition to the other 3 trips into the AUD world. If you are a fan of the AUD series, get this book. If you haven't you probably want to wait until you've passed the vignette in the series. It was cool to visit the ALPA neighborhood. As usual JAF does an excellent job narratoing, to me he IS Adrian. I think I'm going to go listen to the series again ♡ THE VAMP OF MENLOW PARK This short is on another collection of short stories, AT LEAST HIS HEAD ISN'T ON FIRE, and was a standout story. I think it could become a whole book if Chris ever wanted to get into writting vampire books. ... show more

  • Great addition the the AUD universe!
This is a tale right in line with a Stephen King novel. It's dark and horrifying. You can't help but root for the characters, even as you know (if you've read AUD already) where this is going. It draws you in, sends you on a twisted journey and tells you all the secrets of The Shed. It's a piece of the AUD world that stands just fine on its own, but also illuminates more of the unknown mysteries in a amazing series. A definite must read! ... show more

  • Well that explains THAT ...
There so many little untold stories in the AUD universe. A person is happily reading along and then some weird event happens. Then you(I) scratch your(my) head and wonder "well what the heck happened there?" "The Shed" gives us the answer to a weird event Adrian walks into. When I got to that particular event I shuddered a bit, went "eeewwww" and started to ponder. Cooool answer and sadder than I ever imagined. ... show more

  • Quick but great read
Loved it. This was a fantastic read. Not so much a zombie killing story as more of a psychological study, it had me to the unexpected ending. Its a quick read - about an hour - but it is an appropriate length. Everything is essential to the story. It is part of the overall AUD world, filling in more of its story, and it does that very well. ... show more

  • Fans of Adrian's Undead Diary should read this.
This is a great short that gives you a little insight into a situation you'll find in AUD. I love these little back stories, just can't help myself! The only thing about it is it will leave you wanting more!

  • I love how Chris can humanize the characters
I love how Chris can humanize the characters. The kid tried and tried to go one and it wasnt easy.I like that he wasnt some sort of super hero when the outbreak happened.I could relate to him. The eddison short was just a delight. Keep up the good work!!
