as long as I don't try to put the "safety" lock on or off by twisting the base the unit works pretty good. The twisting feature tends to stick and is VERY difficult to unstick while trying not to break it as it is made of plastic. For the quality the price should be LOWER by 1/2 but it is about the same as similar plastic devices. Metal would be better but I couldn't find one when I was trying to purchase one of these items. ... show more

It’s a simple device. I researched this purchase far more than any normal sane person would. Lol. I just was weary of using the manual “nail” under the bottom of the measuring cup that came with our egg cooker. As well, my repeated handling of the cup was causing the printed water level measurements to disappear from the sides of the cup. I did my best to replace the markings with a fine tippped sharpie but still it seemed I neeeded a better solution. I also didn’t want to pay another $10 for a device I’d be disappointed with. Using the manual “nail” that protrudes from the bottom of the water portioning cup that came with our electric egg cooker was a bit awkward and i did tend to crack the shells of the egg I was piercing on rare occasion. Plus it seemed it was simply becoming dull from repeated use. We eat a fair number of hard boiled eggs plus they’re a mainstay in our dogs diets so we go through quite a few. And the inelegant sharpie solution for maintaining the measurements on the outside of the cup was getting old. In the reviews I scoured; looking for the best performing egg piercer, one complaint I read repeatedly was that there was no way to wash the actual pricking pin without water becoming trapped inside of the pricker with no way to drain out. I’m happy to report that this unit DOES have three small drain holes underneath for those inclined to wash their egg prickers. I’ll share however that short of a major malfunction I feel just pushing the pin up into it’s extended position and brushing it with a soft dry toothbrush really does the trick to keep it clean. I just wanted to let any potential purchasers of this unit know that this one does have these holes which I assume are to facilitate drying after washing. To be honest I wish this unit were a bit heftier. It somehow appeared more “substantial” in the photo. It seems it would make it easier to use, and perhaps make it more durable as well as long lasting. It is however, extremely light weight plastic and I personally feel the locking mechanism is a bit “fiddly” so I really don’t mess with it ... but as I don’t have young children playing with my kitchen gadgets so that’s not personally an issue for me. As far as use, I have found that holding the base down to the countertop with one hand while guiding the egg down with gentle but firm pressure with the other had yields the best results. The hole produced is much smaller than the hole produced by using the stationary manual “nail” pricking device at the bottom of the aforementioned water measuring cup, but it does a very good job and the eggs have continued to peel effortlessly. Again, I was hoping for something a bit more “substantial” being made in Germany, but it’s extremely light weight plastic. Still ...it works pretty well; especially using two hands. One small aside ... the one pictured in the listing features a black base, which I would have preferred. The bottom on the one I received is red. Not a deal breaker for me ... just alerting prospective buyers that apparently colors may vary. ... show more

Works well. Tiny sharp needle, doesn’t go deep so u don’t worry about contamination. Much better than other one I ordered which split eggs.

    • Perhaps Different Technique Is Needed, Results Not Great
The base is red not black as in picture. Perhaps I need to try again, my results were underwhelming. I'll attempt to pierce deeper and update rating if successful. This time the shells came off with half the egg this go around. So, I'm not impressed.
