  • A breadbox to beat all bread boxes!
Color: White
I debated spending so much on this bread box, but I could not be more pleased that I did. This is a beautiful and well made item. I know there are less expensive "copies" of his breadbox, but they are made of thin metal and sometimes they come dented or a top doesn't line up perfectly with a bottom. This box has strong hinges and the lid stays open by itself when fully opened. It has a large capacity, and can easily hold a loaf of bread or two plus other pastry or bread items. The vintage European style goes nicely with a modern kitchen, and the available range of colors means it will match any counter/cabinet combination. I really love this thing! ... show more

  • hinges wear out
Color: White
We loved this bread box at first, but we've had it less than a year and the hinges have worn out so the lid just flops back all the way when opened, it hit the wall behind and scratched our kitchen wallpaper. It also tips over now from the weight of the lid, unless you hold it with one hand while getting your bread with the other. This may sound petty, but for a $100 German breadbox, I'd expect more. Amazon doesn't offer any help either to replace or repair. ... show more

  • Beautifully constructed box, but way too small
Color: Silver
This is not a negative review per say since the box is very well made, and has an incredible finish on it. My problem with it is, it's just way too small to fit much of anything in it. (family of four) 1 standard size loaf and not much more. I make french baguette and round loafs, to average size and nothing fits. A standard round loaf you'd buy at a grocery store doesn't fit. I make 18" baguette and they don't fit. A good example is, 1 loaf of peperidge farm bread, and 1 box of Thomas English muffins is about all it will fit. My wife is from France, and we travel there often. Traditionally French people buy their fresh made bread on a daily basis, and on Thursdays and Fridays, they purchase for the weekend. Basically nothing I've seen in France would fit this box. I don't understand what this German company is thinking when their next door neighbors consume more bread than anyone in Europe. Typically European kitchens are small compared to American kitchens. Their appliances are smaller, counter spaces are smaller (generally speaking). Maybe thats the thought process with these small boxes, don't know. The box is so well made, I'd gladly pay double if it were twice the width, and a few inches longer.. I really wanted to keep this bread box, but I just don't want multiple boxes, or have to cut bread loaves in half to fit. ... show more

  • Only way to store baked goods!
Color: Almond
I bake all my own breads. I do mean ALL! It was very discouraging to put a fresh loaf or some burger buns or kaiser rolls into the fridge to keep them 'fresh' when all that was doing was drying them out and very quickly. I did alot of reading and discovered that Wesco has been making bread boxes for decades. I thought I'd give one a try as I really liked the art deco styling as well as that it might be the solution for keeping my hard work results fresher. Well, after a couple of months I'm convinced this was a smart purchase. No longer do I deal with cold, hard breads and rolls from the fridge. I found that baked goods last about 8 to 10 days before they've gone over the edge so two thumbs up from me! What a joy to slice off some bread slices that are still fresh a couple of days into it and they're not ice cold to boot. All that and it looks great in the kitchen. It does take up some real estate on the counter but the offset of my baked goods staying fresh is well worth it. Not to mention the additional space now available in the fridge! Win Win! ... show more

  • $100 for a bread box?! You bet!
Color: White
I spent several days debating whether to buy a $100 bread box. It seems a little crazy, frankly. But boy am I glad I didn't settle for the cheap imitation. This thing is AWESOME. First, it is build like a tank. The metal is very thick, the enamel is heavyweight and flawless. I love the handle, the hinges, the ribs inside on the bottom. It is a great size for my counter and looks absolutely fantastic. Vintage look, but modern, too. A couple days ago I baked a loaf of bread and decided to experiment by putting it in the Wesco without any wrapping. (No bag, etc.) Well,2 days later the bread is not stale, it is still perfect. Even the cut edge hasn't dried out. It really seems like magic! I also have room for a package of English muffins and some rolls. This thing is so well made and so awesome I know it will last a lifetime. LOVE it. My only quibble is that the domed lid means that in order to open it, you have to pull it out from the wall. But since that domed lid means you can fit so much more stuff, it is worth the minor inconvenience. ... show more

  • Expensive, well-made and functional.
Color: Silver
I hesitated a while before buying this piece, because although these are clearly the most beautiful bread boxes on Amazon, they are also breathtakingly expensive for what amounts to a nicely machined, well-painted metal box. And that is exactly what the Wesco Grandy Steel breadbox is. A beautiful silver box, in which to put your bread. The glossy platinum silver paint job would do a car justice. I briefly searched for the rare (perhaps discontinued) mint green, but this color looks too good to complain. There are no sharp edges or unfinished bits. It has a good heft to it, and by all appearances will last forever barring nuclear attack or a tsunami. It looks fantastic in our aspiring-to-be-modern kitchen. Functionally, the box opens smoothly, and the lid will stay open if you wish. It closes tightly, but has ventilation holes to prevent moisture buildup. It is made as nicely as any steel box I have ever seen. Two ordinary grocery loaves will fit once a sandwich or two has been made. And the bread does stay fresher longer. It will eventually mold in there as bread will do, but there is no question it takes longer in the breadbox -- several days to perhaps even a week longer. I still question the price, not because of any lack of the foregoing Grade A, super-duper features, but because $100 is just a lot of money for a breadbox. But here you do in fact get what you paid for -- the strongest, most attractive ... box in which to place your bread you could ever ask for. ... show more
