  • Very useful
Memory Storage Capacity: 6 TB
The space of the area, the storage space of the drive. Both are excellent. 👍👍

  • Great Storage/Great Price
Memory Storage Capacity: 6 TB
I needed a lot of storage for programs I produce but I didn't want to pay more than I needed to. This gave me the best of both. I have always found WD to be highly reliable.

  • Way better than the old version
Memory Storage Capacity: 16 TB
I have the older version of this exact 16tb external drive and this one is much better. The older version would make noise, the ports for the power and data cables felt cheap and the overall shell felt crappy. This one runs quietly and the ports feel much more satisfying to plug into. So far very happy with this ome ... show more

  • The Best Portable Large Capacity Drive For Your Money.
Memory Storage Capacity: 10 TB
I purchased this drive in January of 2020. I bought mine with a 10 terabyte capacity. In terms of portability, it does require A.C power so keep that in mind when you are traveling. However, if you are somebody that needs to have access to a large amount of data or have space for large amounts of data at any given time, then you really can't do much better than this drive. For the price, you are getting a great value with these drives. From disassembly videos, it seems that most of this elements contain Western Digital Red drives. To buy just that hard drive (at an equal storage size as an Elements) it is actually cheaper to buy the Elements than it is to just buy the Red hard drive with no enclosure. When doing data transfers, the drive is fast. I've gotten nearly a true 5gps transfer speed when copying large files. If I had to guess, I would say the drive inside runs at about 5400 or 5600 rpm. While it's not as fast as 7200 or an SSD drive, i'm guessing that it will have a longer longevity than faster hard disk drives. The only time the slower rotation speed becomes a bother is when you haven't accessed the drive for about a half hour. It seems to have an idle mode where it is on standby. When you go back to the drive to access information, it takes about 20 seconds for it to wake back up and get back up to speed. It's not really a problem if you are constantly reading and writing information, but it can be a small nuisance when accessing it intermittently. Long Story short, if you are looking for a drive that has a very large storage capacity, is relatively portable, and is cheap, then look no further. Are there better and faster drives out there? Yes. They also cost more. I have used this drive for video editing and have actively edited movies off of this drive with footage up to 2k resolution with no problem. The main option you are probably comparing this to is the My Book which is also made by Western Digital. The only difference with that drive is that it comes with encryption software, and allows the drive to be accessed by a network. If you need network access then the choice is clear, but if you want the My Book for the encryption software, be aware there are hundreds of other encryption programs available (some of them are free and actually work very well), and purchasing the My Book for that option is sort of a waste of money. If you just need a drive for the storage capacity and nothing else, then this drive is for you. ... show more

  • 8TB of wholesome goodness.
Memory Storage Capacity: 8 TB
I needed to back up a ton of data and so far the drive is performing very well. The firmware is good enough that it doesn't need to be hacked right out of the gate which is a big plus for a WD product.

  • Great so far.
Memory Storage Capacity: 16 TB
I was a little nervous with this purchase because so many of the reviews talked about annoying noises and the HD taking forever to wake up, while others complained that it didn't last long before it broke. Now after having it a few days and putting a couple TB of files on it, I can tell you that two of these complaints didn't seem to affect me. I have noticed practically no noises from my HD at all. Certainly none that I would put into the category of annoying. Yes it does take a few seconds to wake up if you haven't been using it in a while, but it's not that long, again not enough to be complaining about. So far this HD has worked fine, it was plug and play with no need of a software download. I have windows 10, and hope to find a way never to have to upgrade to windows 11. Only time will tell about it's durability, but overall I am pleased with this purchase. ... show more

  • Which to buy, this drive or Seagate???
Memory Storage Capacity: 8 TB
TLDR; This is a fantastic drive get it! This is my opinion, based on my experiences, Your Actual Mileage May Vary. I'm a computer professional, I have done both hardware and software design. I have bought and used many disk drives over the years. So I feel that I am highly qualified to speak on this topic. The disk drive debates tend to resemble religious wars. Lots of people with adamant opinions, but very few with facts. Or understanding of statistics. Over many years, I have purchased a roughly equal number of disk drives from both Western Digital and Seagate. Most of the drives were 4TB or less. And I have not seen major differences between the two brands for the smaller drives. About 3 years ago I purchased 3 of the Seagate 8TB drives. This is so that I can make 3 separate backups of all important data. A practice that I strongly urge every business to do (and if you keep the drives disconnected except when making backups, it will protect you from the viruses that encrypt all of your files). Frankly I have not been too happy with the Seagate 8TB drives. All manufactures claim amazing speeds for their drives, but rarely do actual systems come even close to the claimed speeds. There are a lot of factors that figure into the realizable speed, so that is why these companies can get away with what is basically False Advertising. It has been my experience that the Seagate 8TB drives are slow and noisy. One of the 3 drives is now starting to fail after 3 years of very light use. But for me the bigger issue is that they are slow, the best I see is about 40MegaBytesPerSecond of sustained Write speed and not much faster for reads. (don't confuse Bytes with Bits, Mbps = Bits, MBps should indicate Bytes, but sometimes doesn't, rule of thumb divide Bits Per Second by 10 to get Bytes Per Second). The first thing I noticed about this Western Digital 8TB drive is how quiet it is. In fact it was so quiet that I had to double check to make sure that it had power! After years of listening to the Seagate drives rumbling along it is a really nice treat to have a drive that is essentially silent. Even under full read/write load you can barely hear it. I have just finished subjecting this drive to 3 days of continuous read/write testing and I saw a sustained 100 MegaBytesPerSeconds though put. The lowest it got was about 80MBps after about 30 hours of continuous read/writes on a fairly hot day. Summary: I have 3 Segate 8TB drives (same exact price as this one). They are slow, they are noisy, and after 3 years of very light use one of them is failing. I have subjected this Western Digital drive to 3 days of hard testing. It is more than twice as fast as the Seagate drives and it is nearly silent. I cannot say what the long term reliability will be like, but past experience with 4TB drives and smaller indicates that the reliability should be good. ... show more
