I have been using an older external disk from my older Macbook for backups on my newer Mac not knowing what I was missing on USB-C 3.1 backups. The old SATA to USB A to USB-C (12 inch Macbook dongle) deal was slow and this was pretty fast. Of course I could have bought a Sata to USB-C wire and that would have probably made my older drive zippier but this is so much simpler and I have always disliked the old connector. Probably good to have a newer external drive anyway. Of course the blue version of this drive needed to be formatted for Mac but it was worth if for the couple bucks saved and cooler color. I was wanting an SSD but it's apparently not needed or even recommended for backups. Some reviews claimed the USB-C cable wasn't good or that it didn't fit but that issue must have been fixed or I got lucky. Also if you're considering an SSD lots of stuff in the reviews and even speed tests. This older style disk is reliable and gets the job done and doesn't have any weird speed issues some of the SSDs seem to have. ... show more

With a new computer (MacBook Pro), I wanted to start backups with a new device. Having had multiple Western Digital backup drives and having had NO failures with any of them, I went with the WD 1 TB backup drive. This will let me backup my wife's computer indefinitely, as she doesn't create gigabytes of data each day. Even stylish - one side (bottom) is black, and the top is a silver/chrome, but you wouldn't be embarrassed to have it sitting upside down or right-side up. My Mac version was formatted for Windows NTFS! I guess because it has USB-C they call it a Mac Version? Mac "Disc Utility" can fix this. I did that and was able to download a bunch of files about 200GB in 15minutes. So, reasonable for the price and since I needed the space it was a solution. I do see why Passport is a good name for it- it's smaller but thrice as thick as my passport and thus easy to carry with you. ... show more

I reformatted it to use on Windows. It's working fine and is reasonably fast. The last time I opened a Western Digital USB drive, I found it wasn't a standard SATA laptop drive plugged into an adapter board. It used a proprietary interface.

Great little drives. I'm on my 5th one or so and never had an issue on any size. I keep several backups anyway. The tradeoff for these HDDs is they're quite a bit slower at writing, taking literally several days to completely setup and copy my files. So as long as that fits with your use it's great.
