OK, so Amazon wants me to provide a review of my recent purchase of the ViscoSoft 4 inch Active Cooling Memory Foam Mattress Topper Cal King-Made in USA Select Copper-Infused Mattress Pad. First, a little background is in order before getting to the nitty gritty of the ViscoSoft 4 Inch…. For some time now, I have been awakened throughout the night by aching hips, back, knees, shoulders, etc. Convinced it was due to our too-firm mattress, I embarked on an adventure of discovery regarding the perfect mattress topper (read as “went down a long and winding rabbit hole”). There is no end to the websites that want to tell you the best mattress for side sleepers, back sleepers, people who weigh more than 230 pounds, people who sleep hot, people who sustained injuries doing the Macarena, people who have nothing better to do than research mattress toppers, etc., etc. Some time back we purchased one from Costco, and after several nights of sweat-lodge bonding on a hot memory foam topper, it was dragged back to Costco. The upside was an approximate 5 pound weight loss from sweating all night. Armed with this information, I went about my search for a cooler option. The above noted ViscoSoft 4 inch…got the highest marks for comfort and coolness. And since Amazon offered a free return if we weren’t satisfied, I thought “what the heck!” Last week, I was awakened at 0600 by our front door Ring notification. When I looked at my phone to see who was at our front door, I saw a delivery guy wheeling a large box on a dolly. While the mattress topper was due to be delivered that day, this couldn’t possibly require a dolly for delivery, could it? When the driver departed, I opened the front door to find a very large box marked “HEAVY”. The fact that it was bulging at the end should have been my first clue that there was a compression load inside. I surmised that they must have used 200-pound-test bursting strength tape to contain the contents. Nonplussed, I “walked” the box to the master bedroom and prepared to launch the contents. Husband Larry had his right arm in a sling from recent shoulder replacement, so his ability to assist would be negligible. That said, he was at the ready to provide advice and direction. I retrieved the box cutter from the garage and cautiously opened the bulging end of the box. This got me to thinking about how I would be able to return this item to the box in the event we decided against keeping it, but oh well, I couldn’t think about that today. I was able (with some difficulty) to extract the plastic bag that was keeping the mattress topper under control. Larry correctly suggested that I put the topper on top of the mattress prior to opening the bag. This was actually a brilliant suggestion since as soon as I cut into the plastic bag, there was a faint hissing noise and the memory foam seemed to be remembering that it was supposed to be 4 inches thick. I was frantically trying to remove the plastic bag before topper expansion created the possibility of a plastic explosion. While I have never done so, this is what I would imagine pulling the pin on an inflatable raft would be like. As the topper continued to grow, I became concerned about the displacement and whether the authorities would later find Larry and me pinned against a wall. As the topped proceeded to unfold itself and expand, we were relieved that there was still space for both of us in the room. As I hefted one on the corners to square it on our Cal-King bed, I noticed a folded white and gray item beneath. Turns out this was the cover for the topper. What fresh hell this was…trying to put a pliable king size topper in a giant pillow case. Fortunately, it zipped on three sides, so I was able to demonstrate to Larry that in my nursing days, I could make a bed with a 500 pound person in it, so this wouldn’t be a problem. I was proud to say that I was able to execute this activity with a minimum of expletives (mostly directed at my husband who was telling me I was doing it incorrectly). That accomplished, it was time to position the topper and then re-make the bed. The addition of 4 inches on top of our mattress made for lots of struggling to get the fitted sheet over 10 inches of sleep thickness. After much tugging and pulling, mission accomplished. It was at that point that my back went into spasm, so I was lying on the floor in the fetal position next to the bed. Now Larry, who asks if I’m okay when I sneeze or blink, casually walked out of the room, leaving me to suffer in private. After a week of ice and ibuprofen, my back is feeling better. Hmmm, now wasn’t the purpose of the topper to relieve pain? So the verdict? The additional 4 inches of height means that we have to take a running leap to get into bed, or consider a step-stool or catapult. It does, in fact seem to be cooler than the previous memory foam topper we tried, but since we are sweating from trying to climb into bed, this cannot be definitively confirmed. My 6 foot 2 inch husband commented that when we sits on the side of the bed, his feet don’t reach the floor, leaving him to feel a bit like Humpty Dumpty. The topper is pretty comfortable once you are able to actually get into bed and get settled, but at this point, we don’t think it’s worth the money or the difficulty of getting into bed and making the bed. So…sorry Amazon, but this bad boy must go back. We would have sent it sooner, but we are still trying to figure out how to get it down to the UPS Store for return shipment. Larry has suggested backing his truck up to the garage and maybe I can solicit the help of 2 or 3 of the neighborhood gardeners to help me load it into the truck. Should be interesting. ... show more

  • Comfortable solution!
Color: Ivory Size: Queen
The mattress topper is wonderful, It took a few days to get used to it but since I did I've been sleeping better than ever! It's been a great solution to a 17 year old mattress!

  • Meh
Color: Ivory Size: Queen
Mine arrived damaged. It helped to dissipate body heat but not completely. I also found the mattress to be a little on the firm side. While the seller has a great return policy, as with most mattresses like this, returns are a chore. Once removed from its packaging, the mattress inflates to 3x its size. I had to pay UPS $28 to repackage it before they would accept the return. ... show more

  • Very hard to put the cover on. Takes two people to do the job. Very heavy. We are exhausted 😩
Color: Ivory Size: King
Putting the mattress cover on was very challenging. Definitely a two person job. Other than difficulty getting it zippered up (I hope the zipper never breaks) feels like a nice pad. Wish it had a waterproof feature. I forgot to look for that. I’ll need to purchase another mattress cover for the water proofing ... show more

  • Good for people who like a softer mattress topper.
Color: Ivory Size: Full
I bought this for a temporary bed situation. For people who like a softer mattress it is good. Feels comfy when I go to sleep but wake up with back pain. Put it directly on boxspring and problem solved. Would have to use in summer to know if it was cooling or not.

I put this topper on my bed 3 1/2 weeks ago. It was not easy for me doing it alone. But I got it done. I have slept poorly the past 5 months due to age, pain both knees, back pain, and recent shoulder injury. This was topped off by the sudden loss of a loved one. Then covid hit. More stress. I researched before purchase as I had to find the best on the first choice to get the best. This is the best! Each nite , I have slept more each night, with less and less pain. Last nite, I woke up only once, AND... I just took a 3 hr nap. The topper is as cool as described. I have not awakened sweaty or even damp since the first night. ..In years !. It is not squishy like my prior old topper. I can kneel on it easily to get further to center, and I am not lightweight. My pain has reduced while sleeping to less than 10% this week. Going down less each night.. My body thanks you. My mind thanks you. Yes it was expensive, but if you cannot sleep from stress, pain, limited movement. Worth it. I rarely write a review, but I want others to feel better also. ... show more
