  • Great Way to Find Out What Reed Works Best For You
Size: Strength 2.5
For me, the V16 played just fine, but wasn't the sound I wanted for the genre I play - which is mostly jazz and I'm also in a funk band. The V16 would have been great for a concert band, or in a setting where you need to blend in as it had a warm even tone. I couldn't get it to provide the type of bright sound needed for most soloing situations I find myself in. The ZZ's I could take or leave. I wasn't overly impressed but didn't hate them either. The sound I got was more of the bright sound I need, but I just didn't care for the way the played. The Java Green I liked a lot at first, but after 30 minutes or so it seemed a little too easy to play with no real tonal center. However, I went back to it after a while and really began to like it. Maybe I just needed to stick with them for a while. The Green plays well in all registers, including altissimo, and is very easy blowing which could come in handy for endurance if playing a long gig, and gives me the bright sound I need. The Java Reds give me the bright, raspy-if-I-want-it, sound that I need. They play well in all registers, including altissimo. They play easily but give me enough resistance where I feel like I have more control over the sound and dynamics. I'll probably stick with Java Red, although Java Green is beginning to grow on me. Other info: My tenor is a Selmer Mark VII and I used a Meyer M6M rubber mouthpiece. Tried metal a couple of times and never liked it. The Meyer works perfect for me. UPDATE: I gave the Java Green as honest shot, but the Java Red is by far my favorite in every measurement. ... show more

  • Great way to try all the varieties
Size: Strength 2.5
These fit perfectly. Although these are a little pricy, it's the best way to easily compare reed styles. These are very high quality reeds that last quite a while and perform well consistently.

  • Selling sample pack is a genius idea
Size: Strength 2
Whoever at Vandoren came up with the idea of selling a sample pack - should be promoted. I have always considered myself a Rico guy. But after trying out 4 Vandoren reed of different kind I will probably switch to Vandoren. The best kind was indeed .... .... (I'm not gonna tell you, it is irrelevant for the purpose of this review) It was so easy to try out individual reeds without buying 4 full packs. ... show more

  • Are you kidding?
Size: Strength 2
Since the pandemic began, I decided to pick up a hobby. Well, when I was a teenager in high school I played the bari sax. I was decent enough to go to state three years in a row. After life happened, wife, kids, and 20 years military service, I decided to get back into it. I bought a Jean Paul tenor that came with a Rico reed strength 2. I was able to play the notes on the scale, but it sounded a bit muffled. After much research, I bought this product... Are you kidding me? The Java red and green, and the jazz reeds are incredible. With little to no effort I started playing the scale much easier than with the Rico reed, and I was in tune. Great product. I’m excited and can’t wait to evaluate my sound in 3 months. ... show more

  • Fair enough way to try 4 different style reeds
Size: Strength 2.5
Fair enough way to try 4 different style reeds from a name brand company. The shiny colorful 4 pack with the red and green would fit well with a Christmas display.
