  • Hands down, the best reeds I've ever payed on!!!
Pattern: V16 Reeds Style: Strength 2
It's so hard to write a review on reeds that will help others, because how good a reed will be for each person depends so much on the mouthpiece you're using, and the saxophone on which you're playing, and of course, on your embouchoure, playing style, choice of music, etc. So, let me first say -just for a frame of reference - that I am using these reeds with a Runyon Custom Spoiler mouthpiece, on a Cannonball Big Bell Stone Series Tenor, I mostly play jazz and rock, and my general playing style and my embouchoure are both pretty relaxed. So I got a box of the V16s in the mail today, pulled one out of the box, soaked it and broke it in a little bit, and slipped it onto my runyon (without the spoiler inserted). After about 3 seconds of playing, i decided that I LOVE these reeds!! I played on that one reed for about an hour, and what I can say so far is this: On the Cannonball with the Runyon mouthpiece, the sound is pure and clean, centered, full, and warm. My note-bending even sounds better with these - more precisely in tune with the pitches in my head, and I can get a little buzz going when I want it, but I dont have to deal with any at all when I dont want it. At all volumes, every note across the whole standard range of the horn popped out smooth and easy. I havent messed with altissimo yet (I dont normally play up there). I'll update if i find any problems with that in the next couple of days. If I dont update, it means altissimo range was just as sweet as the rest of the horn. Im not sure how to explain it simply, but I think the best description would be that I felt really "at home" as soon as I blew the first note with the V16. I didnt have to force anything. I was able to focus completely on playing, without having to work hard to control the reed. Im so happy I found these!! I've been playing on ZZs until now, and I really loved them, but I was looking for something else - something more to my tone, that I just wasnt getting with the ZZs. Im glad I went looking! Also, this may very well have just been a fluke, as it is certainly not common in general, but ALL 5 of the reeds in the box I got look perfect! I havent played all 5 yet, so some of them may not play well after all, but none of them are chipped, cracked, split or warped. Oh, and the V16s run a bit stiffer than the ZZs. These run about like Java Reds. So a V16 #2 is between the strengths of ZZ #2 and ZZ #2 1/2, so keep that in mind if you're switching from ZZs. Like I said before, I cant definitively say that anyone else will have the same experience with these reeds as I did, as every setup/player is so different, but I would DEFINATELY recommend giving the V16s a try, to anyone who is still searching for their ideal reed. Fortunately, my search is officially over! ... show more

  • Know your Reed size
Pattern: V16 Reeds Style: Strength 2.5
My husband usually buys reeds from this company, but I didn't know there were two or more sizes. He uses 2.5 reeds, and I bought size 3. He will try them out.

  • Very Versatile
Pattern: V16 Reeds Style: Strength 2.5
These have been my go-to cane reeds for over 10 years and they're still my favorite. For me they blow very naturally. I am able to produce more timbres with this reed than any I've played on, and that makes it feel very similar to singing for me. I use these for jazz, classical, rock, pop, and even the most experimental styles of playing. ... show more

  • They produce an Amazing, Controllable Sound
Pattern: V16 Reeds Style: Strength 3.5
These have an amazing sound, very warm, very tame, and it's the perfect mix of jazz and concert. I'm definitely making these my new norm. No need to buy a size or two up from what you use on blue box reeds. I have 7 years on the Tenor and Alto Sax, this is the most perfect reed for the sound I want with my Selmer Series II Tenor. These are like blue box reeds except 100 times better. ... show more

  • The Best for Me
Pattern: V16 Reeds Style: Strength 3
It's funny how things work out. I tried the Vandoren Jazz Mix with my alto and ended up using the V16 reeds. So I tried another Jazz Mix when I switched to the tenor..... and ended up with the same reed! I guess there are certain reeds that lend themselves to our music selection, playing style, mouthpiece, and embouchure. I also like the Green Java reeds very much, but the V16 are just a tiny bit stronger for me especially up in the high range of the instrument. I use an Otto Link 5* mouthpiece on a Selmer Super Action 80 tenor and the #3 V16 work great! ... show more
