Description

Developed in 1983 for jazz and popular music, the JAVA reed incorporates a thicker tip and a more flexible palette than the Tradational reed which allows the reed to vibrate over a larger surface area with maximum elasticity. This type of vertebral column gives the musician much greater playing flexibility, as the resultant elesticity zone is very large. The palette is the zone where the air waves are propgated with the greatest range. From the tip, the waves are absorbed firther in the JAVA reed.

My go to for the gig tenor for its brightness and ability to get a cutting sound in a noisy club situation and a room where the sound is more dead. My issue is way too often I get samples that feel like Im playing a 2x4 and sound like I am playing through a pillow. I try to scrape and adjust and no-go. Been playing almost 5 0 yrs so I know dead reeds. Would hate to go to synthetic but reeds cost too much to may almost 30 bucks and get three good ones for a tenor. ... show more

    • Consistently great sound -- my new reed of choice

I played tenor 35 years ago and swore by Rico Royal reeds. When I took it up again a couple years ago the sax I bought came with some old Rico Royals. They were just like I remembered, but I bought a box of new ones and they were uniformly disappointing. A sax player friend (who hadn't taken a 35-year hiatus) confirmed that their quality had suffered over the years. So I tried a Vandoren sample pack. I loved the Red Java reed, which had a rich & lively sound, but bought a box and none of them lived up to the promise of that first reed. I also liked the Green Java sample reed -- a little more mellow than the Red -- and tried a box of those. This time every reed in the box sounded great. And now I just upgraded from 2.5 to 3 and every reed in that box sounds even better, so I've found my new reed of choice. ... show more
