Description

The conception of the OPTIMUM series was the fruit of research on both the external shape, particularly the beak, and sound in order to meet the needs of today's saxophone players. The OPTIMUM mouthpiece is more free-blowing and responsive with accurate articulation, precise intonation and total control at all dynamic ranges. The OPTIMUM series sets a new standard in classical saxophone mouthpieces. Available in soprano, alto, tenor and baritone saxophones.

  • 4.0 out of 5 stars This is for a TL5 mouthpiece.
Style: TL4 Pattern: Saxophone Mouthpiece
Vandoren's literature, this has a sound similar to the T20! and a response similar to the TL3. I believe the T20 is superior. Every TLx (or ALx for that matter) that I have tried has a bark to it. They are overly sensitive to reed buzz and have that bark to the tone. The TL5 is better in that respect but it is detectable. ... show more

  • 5.0 out of 5 stars Versatile mouthpiece for tenor
Style: TL3 Pattern: Saxophone Mouthpiece
I've been using an AL3 on my alto for years and love it, so decided to try the TL3 on my tenor. Initially I was surprised that it had a brighter sound than I expected vs. my AL3. I've been experimenting with different reeds and ligatures and found I can create a wide range from warmer & darker to brighter. Would recommend for anyone looking for a mouthpiece with a lot of versatility! ... show more

  • 5.0 out of 5 stars Change of heart
Style: TL3 Pattern: Saxophone Mouthpiece
I really do not like evaluating subjective things like this. This might be a great mouthpiece for some people. I have only been playing for a year with no training from a teacher because there are none available where I am. At least not now. I could play with this mouthpiece but was hoping for more and better from it. But since we humans are all different, what is good for one may not be good for another. I have to change my evaluation of this mouthpiece to be fair. I tried a new reed and ligature on this mouthpiece and it played great. Full and rich lows and nice dynamic highs. I should have done much more experimenting than I did when I wrote my original evaluation. Now change my previous rating from a 3 to a 5! ... show more

  • 4.0 out of 5 stars Good for Classical Saxophone/Wind Ensemble
Style: TL5 Pattern: Saxophone Mouthpiece
I play a lot of jazz on a more open metal mouthpiece with a baffle. The TL5 makes it easier for players like me who also play on more open mouthpieces. This mouthpiece comes in TL3 – .069″, TL4 – .077″, and the TL5 – .081″. Tip opening is really just about how much air you have to use, definitely don't buy into the "larger openings will produce a more rich sound" or the "larger tip openings are brighter"...the TL5 will be somewhat more resistant than the TL3, but will allow the reed to vibrate further at a louder volume. Many professionals including my college teacher use a TL3. You really can't get a better serious classical mouthpiece at this price. Beginners should probably stick to the 4C/5C for a few years before moving onto more standard mouthpieces like this or the V16. ... show more

  • 5.0 out of 5 stars Very good mouthpiece
Style: TL4 Pattern: Saxophone Mouthpiece
Initially I tried this with 2.5 reeds and didn’t work for me that good, but with 2 is much better and don’t have to blow that much air. Make sure you position the reed accordingly, as you look from the reed side you should see just s bit of mp on the top. The tone is awesome on the bright side!

  • 5.0 out of 5 stars I’m Satisfied!
Style: TL4 Pattern: Saxophone Mouthpiece
This Vandoren TL4 easily plays low Bb to high F# easily and has a timbre that I was looking for. I was expecting it to be dark like my Selmer Paris Soloist for classical but found it with a slightly brighter and pleasing sound—it reminds me of my Vandoren V5 A28 for my alto. Intonation is very good and only 10 cents sharp on middle D which can easily be corrected. I found the Vandoren 2.5 V21 & Blue Box reeds too soft and a V21 3.0 good, but a Légère Signature 3.0 to 3.25 sounds the best. ... show more

  • 5.0 out of 5 stars A staple in all of my sax cases
Style: TL3 Pattern: Saxophone Mouthpiece
I recently played my Tenor Sax in a concert with my local community band and needed a new mouthpiece for it as the only one I had was heavily geared toward jazz. I have an Optimum mouthpiece for soprano and alto which I find good for concert repertoire, so I bought the tenor version. It works just as I hoped it would. It's free-blowing, and the intonation I find is very controllable. Like I said, I find that the Optimum mouthpieces are geared more toward classical/concert band type music. It's not the best mouthpiece for jazz or rock as I find it doesn't project as well as some other pieces. However, the tone from this piece blends well and leans to the dark end of the spectrum. Overall, lived up to my expectations. ... show more
