  • Gym owners HATE these!!!!!
Style: BD-7 Power Rack w/ Lat Pull
I bought this 2 months ago to the day. I wanted to write a review, but I wanted to give it time for the excitement to wear off so I could give a more everyday impression of it. My quick background as a lifter... I'm in my early 30s, been lifting since my mid 20s... only recently got my diet and routine dialed in though. Anyway, I always knew I wanted a home gym, as whether I go to a local gym near work or home I lose a good 30-40 minutes getting there and coming back. My wife likes working out but hates the gym environment as well. Alright, enough of my life story... how is the RACK? Assembly was pretty easy. Just get a hand drill with a 3/8" socket adapter, a 17mm socket and a 17mm wrench. I think that's all I needed. Instructions were pretty straightforward and it took about an hour. The cage itself feels pretty high quality... I can see myself using this for decades. Using the rack itself is pretty good. I have it in a room that is 11x12' in size, with a vertical leg press machine, a plate tree and some plastic dressers. The room is definitely full, but I can move around and have enough room to either go through my routines, which are all supersets, or to be in the room with my wife while she works out without feeling like we are on top of each other. I know what you want to know. WHAT IS THE DEAL WITH THE PULLEYS? Well I have used them 4-5x per week for the last 2 months, and so far they feel great. I tried various things to lubricate the pulley shaft... the last thing I tried was Vaseline, but I haven't touched that in weeks. Ultimately it works, though I do wish it had more sophisticated bearings for the weight holder itself. I read some reviews about the pulleys getting chewed up so I pre-emptively ordered some metal pulleys... I have not installed them yet though. The stock units are working fine so far, even when I load them up with ~170+ lbs. The unit just feels very solid. My only gripe, and it's so minor I don't feel it's enough to take any stars off, is when I rack bench weight in the cage the unit leans back a little bit. It needs stabilizing feet in front and in the back. But that is really minor. It doesn't feel like the unit is going to fall backwards or is dangerous at all. Other thing is the weight holders are too close together. I would love more space to have the flexibility to put 45s on both levels. So to sum up here are the pros and cons from my POV: Pros: - Phenomenal price - Good build quality - High/low pulleys work great even with heavy weight - Quick and easy assembly - Height gives enough clearance for chinups Cons (really minor): - Unit tips back a little bit when racking barbell for bench - Weight holders are too close together for Olympic 45s on both levels I am a bit neurotic when it comes to a lot of things, and I am an engineer, so I am more relieved than anything that this works so well. It's a simple but effective design and an incredible value. If you can wean yourself off of fancy machines and stick with free weights this should cover all your needs and render HELLA GAINS. ... show more

  • A very good buy
Style: BD-7 Power Rack w/ Lat Pull
I was looking for a power rack for a long time. Even considered some used ones from local ads. In the end, the Valor BD-7 seemed to be too good to be true considering it comes with the Lat pull and lower pulley. Why buy a used one when you can get a new one for about the same. Assembly was relatively simple. Took me about 2 hours by myself. Some better labeling of the parts would have saved some time but not a big deal. I thought since it is inexpensive it will be quite flimsy. It is not. Honestly I don't see the need for a very thick gage of steel like some of the very expensive brands offer. As long as it is sturdy and safe enough (well beyond the weights I will be using) who cares. The room inside the cage is quite enough. I am 6 -2 and I have no problems. However after a few combinations, I have decided to do the bench press in side the cage and squats outside. The safety bar is more important for the bench press. For the squat you can always drop the bar safely on the floor anyway in case of an emergency. This way I do not have to change and move around the bars and safety rods. I do agree with a few other reviews that talk about some minor issues. The bar supports (J hooks) that come with the system are a bit too long and also they incline downwards so the bar slides out and rests against the ends. In my opinion it is still safe so I am not taking a star off. I did order the short bar holder from the same vendor. Not only will it give me a better bar holder, I will then have more bar storage (3 plus the safety stop). I did apply a spray(silicone with teflon) to lubricate the pulley system just as a precaution. I have not seen any issues that some people talked about. All the weights I have are standard so I am glad this is built for standard weights. If someone has Olympic they can always add the adapter so it is smart to have everything sized to standard. I am planning to add more accessories as well slowly. In addition to the short bar support (J hooks) I have also ordered a landmine (T bar row) equipment that can be attached to the bottom of the frame for T bar exercises. I currently also have a pull up tower with knee ups and dip bars. A lot of that is now redundand with this power rack. I am planning to buy the elbow straps and dip bar handles and then this will be able to do everything the tower does allowing me to sell that and make some badly needed room in the home gym. Some other possible enhancements that I can do later are adding a tennis handle grip band to the pull up rod for a more comfortable grip as well as adding band pegs using PVC pipe. Th elatter will be a bit of a project as it may involve drilling some holes. I am also wondering if I can add foot plates for the bottom pulleys. The BD-33 and BD-41 models come with them. I will try to contact the vendor directly to see if they will sell me the foot plate. Or I can improvise something.Overall an excellent product for the price. ... show more
