  • You will either love it or hate it.
I have always enjoyed this film -- Nureyev's appalling acting is perfect, as the fact that almost all the Americans are played by English actors doing awful accents. If that description frightens you, then this mightn't be your movie. Kenn Russell was one of the few directors who could rival Kubrick for his cinematic acuity. While he may have tossed off a few dogs (Lisztomania and Tommy), he knew how to tell a story. And now a WARNING: on the back of the box is printed the following: "This disc is expected to play back in DVD Video "play only" devices, and may not play back in other DVD devices, including recorders and PC drives". Yeah, really -- This is some kind of cut rate disc manufacturing process, so mine failed quickly. Be smart and, if you can, back it up immediately. Thanks for nothing MGM ... show more

  • High Camp...That Works
The jury is out on whether or not Ken Russell was a good director but most certainly he is an interesting one. In the Mid-Seventies there were a series of film bios about figures from Hollywood's Golden Age, notably "Gable and Lombard" and "W.C. Fields and Me" to name a few. These were for the most part earnest affairs that mostly took a straightforward approach to their subjects. Russell here takes an opposite tack by sending up the genre. For better or for worse "Valentino" is sublimely surreal. Watching this film I found by jaw drop and in most cases that's not such a bad thing. What Russell is doing here is lampooning the Roaring Twenties which some would appreciate and others offend. What keeps me from giving the film the full five star treatment is the comically inept performance by Rudolph Nureyev as Valentino. Intentional, perhaps? Struggling with what I think is an Italian accent, Nureyev doesn't seem to be in on the joke or maybe he doesn't comprehend. Regardless, I give kudos to Russell for some of his casting choices. You can't go wrong with a film that includes among it's cast Huntz Hall (The Bowery Boys) as Jesse Lasky, John Ratzenberger(Cliff Claven from "Cheers") as a reporter and Billy McKinney ("Deliverance") as a sadistic jailer. On a final note of trivia, Carol Kane who is in this film, also appeared in another film in 1977 that featured Valentino albeit in abbreviated form, Gene Wilder's underrated comic gem "The World's Greatest Lover". ... show more

  • Review Without Spoilers - Pros & Cons
Valentino (1977) is a U.S. biographical film co-written & directed by Ken Russell. The film stars Rudolf Nureyev, Leslie Caron, Michelle Phillips, Carol Kane, & Felicity Kendal. The film is loosely based on the life of silent film actor Rudolph Valentino, as recounted in the book Valentino, an Intimate Exposé of the Sheik, written by Chaw Mank and Brad Steiger. Here are the Pros & Cons of the film. Pros: 1. Felicity Kendal does a great job acting her part 2. If you enjoy watching dancing you will enjoy that element of the film 3. Nice sets and cinematography Cons: 1. Very melodramatic which is relative to the time Valentino acted in films, however, I just don't like overly acted and melodramatic films ... show more

  • "Oh, you can't be serious..."
There are two ways to approach a biopic. There's the standard linier present-the-facts- and-draw-your-own-conclusion approach. And the Citizen Kane non-linier tabloid way. This late 70's litmus test takes the latter approach and wraps it all up in delicious Ken Russell excess. The result is a laugh out loud cinematic outrage that rightfully drove most audiences to drink. The 'what-were-they-thinking?' casting of ballet legend Nureyev and 'Mama' Michelle Phillips as Valentino and his wife Natasha make this a camp classic ripe for rediscovery. But it does have truly glorious production design - and this dvd preserves much of it in widescreen format. ... show more

  • Valentino still fascinates.
Over the top retelling of the legend of Valentino. Colorful, glitzy, purely entertaining.

  • The Worst!
I don't think I've ever seen a worse movie than Valentino. The script, the story, the acting are all terrible. Rudolph Nureyev is a compelling screen prescence whose charm quickly disappears the moment he delivers his stilted dialogue. Michelle Phillips is perhaps the worst part of a terrible film. The sets are beautiful but the movie is painful to watch. ... show more

no, the acting isn't great; and yes, the story could have been fleshed out a bit more but i think that what you get is a fairly accurate portrayal of an iconic personality in film history. no complaints from me, as i enjoyed the movie on its' merits
