These tongs put less stress on the crucible by supporting it from the bottom as the crucible is removed. Great for heavier metals. I wouldn't say it was packed *well. An effort was made, and nothing was broken, but there was a fair bit of crushed styrofoam floating around. Most of the screws for the tongs were loose and trying to break free of the box, but none of them escaped. Just one of them took a minute to find. I get that it's an awkward shape and tricky to pack. And yeah it got here just fine. I coated the insulation with about a pound (dry) of satanite refractory mortar to both keep the fibers under control and make the insulation last longer, and i let it cure for 2 days. As others have said ALWAYS put a piece of cardboard between the firebrick and the crucible because the ashes it leaves behind will prevent them from sticking. I also went to a thrift store and got a large stainless steel slotted spoon for skimming off slag and a muffin tin for the ingots. I got some long-reach pliers from the low-dollar hardware store too. And welding gloves, of course, which i already had. Took less than 20 minutes to melt down a pair of VW 1.6D pistons. ... show more

I have no idea what I'm doing.. I'm new to melting metals. I have lots of scrap copper tubing so I thought that I'd melt it into clean copper to get more money for it. I haven't brought it to the scrap yard yet so I don't know if this is the best idea. But, this furnace is hot and easily melts copper. Cons that I found: it uses lots of propane and the pouring tongs aren't the best design. Maybe I have weak wrists but it's not easy to pour 10 pounds of molten copper using these tongs if you use the handles. I've been putting my hand close to the hot kiln to be able to control the pour. Other than that, this furnace is awesome. I'm buying one for my dad for Christmas. I keep getting a hot chunk of slag in the bottom, i don't know if this is junk from the copper or if it's from the air mixing with the molten copper, causing porosity. my only real complaint would be i wish more accessories where included to make it a complete kit. i just bought a pair of cast iron 100oz molds to go with this and a cheap metal spoon from the dollar store to use as a dross spoon. i already had a paid of welding gloves so didn't need to buy some.

It seams to be very well built nice thick metal and everything looks nice except the pot that sits down inside. When I opened the box I found it to be cracked pretty bad but not a huge deal I don’t suppose just wish it was all wrapped up a little better for shipping.
