  • Great scanner if you want to "scan and go".
Style: Homepatrol2
Like most Unidens of late, the HP-2 is an easy to use scanner that updates the HP-1 to add P-25 TDMA (phase 2) and USB charging/power. You enter your zip code and select what you want to hear. Building favorites lists is easy. Runs off included AA NiMH or USB power, they include a power cable but you'll need to provide your own USB power source of 1 amp or more. I leave it on a local P25 system to monitor our fire dispatch and firegrounds and it works wonders. It can also record radio traffic for later playback. Does weather alert too. I have a 436 and this form factor/touch screen is great for a desk or bed side if you want to keep an ear on things. Note that if your desired radio systems use encryption, this and any scanner will NOT receive encrypted talk groups on trunking systems or frequencies, so always check sites like Radio Reference or local experts before buying. ... show more

  • Great little scanner!
Style: Homepatrol2
Great little scanner. It was easy to set up and I get to listen to a variety of different types of calls.

  • Paperweight
Style: Homepatrol2
It is not a plug-in and play. It is not a enter a zip code and go. Over 300+ channels scanning and nothing, not a single, call, Hello, nothing. I wish I had not purchased. It is not easy, it does not work in NE Oklahoma if you are in this area. It will not work. Hundreds of channels scanning and nothing. If you have to manually enter and manually remove channels it will not be easy. ... show more

  • Solid Unit, Lots of Features, Easy to Setup and Fun to Tinker With
Style: Homepatrol2
I've owned several Uniden scanners over the years and currently own the Uniden 436HP and the classic BR330T. I recently started looking into putting a scanner into my truck that I could also easily swap between vehicles. That immediately disqualified Uniden's standard mobile offerings. Sure, I could have mounted one of my handhelds but reading those screens while driving is next to impossible. This is where the Homepatrol 2 fits in. Besides having a very readable screen, it can easily be moved between vehicles and home when needed when you have the appropriate mounts. I was already familiar with Uniden's home patrol concept. It's a small learning curve but when it "clicks," it all makes sense. In short, the HomePatrol 2 (HP2) has a massive data base of frequencies available to you via an included microsd card. How you organize those frequencies for your listening purposes can be accomplished in two ways. You can either just put in your zipcode and choose what service types you'd like to hear (police, ems, fire...) or you can use Uniden's Sentinel software to organize the frequencies into favorites lists which is like a new way of setting up banks. I've created several lists for my home area but will sometimes use the zip code method if I'm visiting a new place. This is very handy as in the "old days" I'd either have to program the scanner before I left for a trip or I'd just use the search function to find something to listen to. Now, there's no guessing no matter where I go which is great. Admittedly, as someone who has been scanning for 30 years, I do feel like I am somehow cheating thanks to how easy it is to set up the HP2 but I think I will get over it :) As far as hardware goes, this is a solid feeling unit. It's a little heavier than I expected it to be and that's fine because this is not something you would likely be carrying around like a handheld. The speaker sounds good (not tinny). The touch screen is responsive and accurate. The scan rate is zippy. I ran it next to my 436 and they were pretty much on par with one another. The screen is one of the selling points of this scanner for me. It's easy to ready and provides a lot of data. If you're considering this scanner and want to future-proof yourself against the eventual expansion of some agencies to P25 Phase 2 systems, I'd recommend this unit. If you're not concerned or know that what you listen to does not require that system capability, go with the HP1 (previous model.) ... show more

  • Easy to use. Portable.
Style: Homepatrol2
Nice to find a "Smart" scanner designed for the modern generation. Wanted something that was easy to program and update. Also portable. Was very easy to update and "program" with their software. I was using a Uniden BCD 996T I got from my grandfather who was no longer using it. That could not hold in it's memory all the local stations/IDs. A pain to program. This HomePatrol 2 Model...completely different design than the normal "DIN" style scanners. The DIN style units are much more durable and metal construction. Those are meant to be mounted . This is a plastic portable unit and very much is like using one of those old portable car GPS units (like a Garmin or TomTom). It doesn't feel nearly as sturdy and premium product price worthy as the DIN style scanner. I think this could be a bit cheaper in price. The LCD itself is very much the type of screen u see on older portable car GPS units. Not at all like modern smartphones. Resolution is quite low. Colors are a bit washed out and the touch response is not as good as I would like. The power and volume controls are on top of the unit(the only physical buttons), causes me an issue as i normally kept my BCD996T slid under my computer monitor stand on my desk. All the controls on the DIN style unit are easy to reach, but this HomePatrol design, i have to slide the thing out to adjust volume or turn it off. No on screen volume adjust that i can find. The built in speaker is not that good. Quite tiny and trembley. Not as good and clear sounding as the speaker built into my BCD996T. The UI is ok. I do like how it displays the 3 lines of broadcast info...something i did not have before. Easy to lock channel by pressing the screen However, this UI seems to be missing the more precise features of the DIN scanner...like manual System/Service search. (It was easy to just have the scanner search one system or service on my 996T.) I can lock it on a system or service, but have to tap the arrow, then the Next option to go to the next station, but then it starts scanning. Miss the "wheel" on the DIN style That is much easier for manual control. The charging on this unit is not intelligent. In the settings, the Set Charge Time is based on the mAh u enter. The max u can enter is 2300mAh 14hrs. You plug it in...it asks do you want to charge, then it starts this countdown timer(from the Charge Time setting). The batteries I put in were already full. It still is counting down 14hrs until fully charged. You can use the unit while charging. It uses older MINI USB??? Haven't had any device that uses mini usb in years. Micro is the the standard these days. Have to have a separate cable now...or just get a micro to a usb micro to mini adapter. Unlike the 996T, I had software that allows my PC to display and control the scanner. That doesn't seem to be possible with this Home PAtrol 2 unit. I guess if you want the more traditional and "professional" control on a scanner, get the DIN style models. But you want a easy to use scanner that pretty much is just on Auto(and is portable)....get this. The Antenna that comes with it is short range...suitable for portable or traveling use. But I recommend a better antenna if you want to use it at home on a desk. ... show more
