  • Excellent package for beginners
Size: Tenor
I started palying the ukelele a month or two ago with a loaner and decided that I would stick with it and purchase my own. The tenor model that I purchased has been way more than satisfactory in every way, recognizing that it is targeted for beginners such as myself. The bundle supplies everything needed to learn and play, and I expect that it will meet my needs for some time to come. An excellent value forthe money, definitely worthy of five stars! ... show more

  • IN LOVE!!!!
Oh my goodness!! LOVE IT!!!! This is my first uke. I spent days and days, and hours upon hours looking at what to purchase. I read many reviews that kept pointing me in this direction. I bounced back and forth between the concert and soprano. I settled on the concert, for the slightly richer tune. The startup kit was amazing! It had everything that one needs to get started. Everything is of exceptional quality. I’ve had it for about a month and a half, and I’m SO ADDICTED! I play for hours, nearly every day. The downloadable beginners books and tutorial videos were great for a couple starting lessons. I don’t have anything negative to say about any part of this kit. I would highly recommend for a first uke!!! I’ve bounced back and forth on whether to make a second purchase, this time the soprano. If I do. It will definitely be from this company! High quality, great sound, wonderful customer support. Happy camper here!!! ... show more

  • Very good starter Uke at a very attractive value point.
OK, I am not a uke player, but I do play piano and guitar so I thought I would take a shot at a ukulele. I am by no means rich so like most I am looking for a budget friendly solution. I took a shot on this kit with low expectations. I mean after all, what can you expect from a complete package for under $100? I went with the concert size which is the most popular and a good choice. Size doesn't matter, really, if you believe it does and want to blame the size of the Uke on your playing ability, just take a look and listen to Israel "Iz" Kamakawiwo playing Over the Rainbow on YouTube - No excuses! To be honest the instrument is nicer than I expected. For under $100 you get a nice instrument with decent string tuners and good strings. I was skeptical about the little instrument tuner that comes in the package, but I am pleasantly pleased with its operation and accuracy. It works as well as and agrees with my much higher priced guitar tuner. Lohanu even sends an extra battery for the tuner and an extra set of strings in the kit. Let's be honest, a tuner will cost about $10 minimum and those little round CR2032 batteries will cost you a buck or two. A new set of strings will cost about $8 to $10. So I am not sure how the manufacturers provides a Ukulele and all of the add-ons for under $100. This package sure meets my requirements for a "budget" solution. The kit comes with a gig bag that is of better quality than I expected. I expected a really thin vinyl bag with no padding. This bag is made of a more durable nylon material with some minimal padding. It should work well for most people and casual use. You sure won't want to put it in checked baggage on a plane, but I wouldn't do that with any gig bag. A hard case would be in order for that type of travel. As I said, the quality of the instrument is good. The finish is nicer than I expected. I will add a coat of lemon oil and then polish it up with some instrument polish to make the neck nice and slick and protect the wood. The fret board came well oiled, straight, and the frets are nicely level and dressed on the ends. The body and the neck both have a nice binding which adds to the looks of the ukulele. The set-up on my ukulele was very good right out of the box. I have not had to make any adjustments to it If you are new to nylon strings, be prepared for a significant break-in period. It took mine 2 or 3 days of regular play and adjustments before they started staying in tune. Don't get frustrated if you find yourself retuning every few minutes the first couple of days. I swear, at times I asked myself how much more these strings can stretch? I keep expecting the E string to break at any moment, it seems (exaggeration) that I have turned the tuner at least 5 or 6 full turns since the original tuning. Be patient and the strings will eventually settle in. Don't think you still won't have to tune often, but you should be able to play for a while without having to retune every few minutes. I think the biggest plus for this Ukulele is the looks, very nice. The workmanship is good for a budget uke, and it sounds really nice. To me a purchase is about value, not just cost. You can get cheaper ukuleles that you probably will not be happy with. Or, you can buy way more costly ukuleles, that I am confident are even more beautiful and better quality than this one. But if you are a beginning player or adding a uke to your repertoire of instruments, I think this kit is an excellent value and an excellent place to start. I know that even $100 is a lot of money to many, but in the world of musical instruments, it isn't much. Don't go super cheap, you will be disappointed and will likely quit playing. This kit is a great value for a new or intermediate player. If it doesn't work out for you, I am confident you can easily resell it and recoup a good portion of your money or give it away to a budding ukulelist without loosing sleep over wasting too much money. If you outright buy a $500-$5000 ukulele I guarantee you will either love it and sleep with it, or feel poorly about spending so much money. Again, this is a great value for beginners or even intermediate players. I am confident you will get years of fun and enjoyment out of your ukulele if you go with this kit. I have not had a need to interface with the manufacturer, but from what I hear the customer service is great. I am pleased with my purchase and don't think you can go wrong with this kit. Good Luck and have fun with your new ukulele adventure. Mahalo! ... show more

  • A Long But Thorough Review
The first part of this review is for the ukulele alone. (I'll get to the accessories in a minute) This is my first ukulele and I've had it for a little over a month now. During that time I've been able to hear and handle higher end ukuleles and I have to say that this one holds up very nicely in comparison. It's got the look, feel and sound of much more expensive models at an affordable price. I like the high quality strings that come already installed. These are nylon strings that are easier on your fingers than other types of strings and as a beginner I really appreciate that. The slightly bowed back of end of the body gives it a nice rich sound not often found in ukes at this price point. I also like the strap hardware that came pre-installed. This was a very nice touch since usually you'd have to install them yourself or pay a music store to do it for you. And as a beginner the last thing I'd want to do is have to screw something into my new instrument myself. Metal tuning pegs instead of plastic ones are also something not typically found in ukes at this price point. They are sturdy and comfortable to turn. Plus they look great. Things to be aware of: * Like any stringed instrument, the stings do take a little time before they stretch to the point where they're able to maintain the tuning. So it is completely normal to have to re-tune it frequently at first. But eventually the stings do settle in and hold the tune as they should. * There are some sharper edges along the neck where the fret lines are. But to me this really wasn't a big deal. Not even worth deducting a star over. I've never been cut or even stretched by them and it doesn't interfere with my ability to play it comfortably. Just something to be aware of. Now for the accessories. If this is your first ukulele and you're just trying to get as much as you can for the lowest price possible, these accessories will get you by for now. And some of them are in fact quite good. But first let's start with the gig bag. This gig bag wasn't my favorite. It offers very little padding and doesn't open wide enough to let you lie your uke inside it. Instead you have to slide your uke into it through the side, which can result in your tuning pegs moving and untuning the instrument while trying to store it. It is a very lightweight bag, but that's probably due to the lack of padding and smaller zipper opening. This gig bag is better than nothing and will get you by, but you'll probably want to upgrade it soon. The plastic picks are very nice looking and come in 2 different sizes. It also comes with a pick holder. However, everything I've read says that plastic picks are not recommended for ukuleles due to the wear on the stings and the unappealing plastic-y clicking sound it makes when you use them. I've tried using them anyway and the plastic-y clicks make it sound more like a cheap toy than the beautiful instrument that it is. Most people recommend not using a pick at all. But if you must use a pick, the most recommended types of pick to use on ukuleles are felt, rubber or leather picks. Again these plastic ones will get you by, but you'll likely want to upgrade those too. Now for the good stuff. Getting an extra set of Aquila strings is awesome. These are high quality stings that are some of the best ukulele stings on the market and having an extra set handy is really helpful. The strap is good and I like that it's adjustable. It's a bit plain for my taste. But that's understandable since it's trying to appeal to a broad audience. The included tuner excellent. It can be used for several different types of stringed instruments. It's very easy to use and easy to read, even for someone like myself who is visually impaired. Free online lessons: Okay yes you can find similar lesson videos on YouTube. However, with the Lohanu lessons you get everything you need to get started in one easy to find place. You get a few very easy to follow video lessons, a couple of songs to learn, and the numbered cord charts to go with them, without having to go look for each thing individually. I do wish there were more lessons and songs though. And maybe they'll add some in the future. But the current lessons will at least allow you to get started right out of the box. Despite my few hang ups with some of the accessories, I didn't deduct a star because this company could have easily sold the ukulele alone for this same price and it would've been well worth it. The extras are simply that, extras. If you look around you'll see lower quality ukes for even higher prices that don't come with anything else at all. So even if you end up not using some of the accessories, you will save money on the ones you do find useful and that's a bonus. And if you're a beginner like me, the online lessons are a nice little bonus too. Over all I am extremely happy with this perchance. I LOVE my ukulele and I would absolutely recommend this company to anyone looking for a good quality ukulele at an affordable price. ... show more

  • Seems like good quality
I haven't had much time to work with it, but it seems like it is not stung properly. The tuner doesn't seem to do much of anything useful. I am giving it 4 stars because of the two reasons I mentioned. I will have more time to play with it this coming winter. If something changes, I will update my review. ... show more
