  • Bright and long lasting candles
Color: Red
Easy to use. Simple design. Seems pretty tough.

  • Sometimes the older ways are the better ways...
This is a cleverly designed candle lantern. The candles sit in little retaining cylinders with springs underneath them, so as the candle melts, the flame stays in exactly the same, ideal spot. The flame is protected by glass so it works even in moderate wind and the three candles are apparently powerful enough together that you could eventually boil water by placing a container on the flat metal top of the lantern (although I have never tried that). But while this design is clever, it is running on a technology that would be perfectly familiar to Benjamin Franklin. In today's modern world, is something that runs on candles practical? Not really. You can get an LED lantern that is smaller, lighter, more durable, gets much brighter, doesn't use expensive candles, and has no fire hazard associated with it. But I just returned from a five day car camping trip, and I barely used my big LED lantern, while this thing got lit every single night. The LED lantern got relegated to helping me do dishes or other task-based duty where I needed a lot of light. But then it got switched off almost immediately in favor of this lantern, which ran from dark until bedtime. The harsh "cool" white light from a modern LED lantern just cannot compare with the pleasant, warm, soothing glow of this lantern. I used this in conjunction with a few of the smaller UCO tea light lanterns and it made my campsite such a pleasant place after dark. Hiking around the larger campground after dark, I saw LED lantern after LED lantern, and there was really no comparison in how much nicer my campsite was than those who had fallen for the latest technology. You go camping because you want to enjoy yourself. This is a small luxury item with an absolutely huge payoff in ambiance. This is one of the best things I bought for the most recent trip, and it is definitely coming with me on future adventures. Yes, you could also use it as an emergency light source, provided you put up enough of the relatively expensive, special candles it takes. But it is probably not the most cost-effective way to handle that situation. If you are just looking for a utilitarian light, buy an LED lantern and some extra batteries for it. This is a lantern to use when you want more than just lumens out of your light source. In that role, it absolutely excels. I would definitely buy the little protective neoprene sleeve for it. Even then, it should be handled carefully. The candles last a good long time, but buy them in bulk, they are much cheaper that way. ... show more

  • Fantastic lantern!
Color: Aluminum
I bought this because I like the ambiance of candles and lanterns. This is a great way of setting the mood. I also wanted it for disaster preparedness. Candles don't go bad if stored properly. Buy a box or two of candles and a Candlelier and you have a dependable light source that should be ready to go for decades. Candles might be more expensive than bulk buy batteries for LED flashlights, but you don't ever have to worry about them going bad. The Candlelier puts out 5000 btus of heat, and tests on Youtube show that in an hour or two it should heat up a small cold space by 10 or 20 degrees depending. I haven't tested this myself, but I believe it. I wanted to try the Candlelier ability to boil small amounts of water. Most disaster preparedness stoves you might keep around like the Trangia alcohol stove or cans of Sterno are not to be used indoors as they emit harmful amounts of carbon monoxide. Now suppose your'e in a rustic cabin and the weather has gone to heck and you don't feel like going outside to cook with your other stove options. It will take a while, but you can cook a meal safely indoors with the Candlelier. I used a TOAKS 750ml titanium pot filled with exactly 2 cups of water, put the lid on, and put it on the Candlelier. In 1 hr 10 min I got the 2 two cups of water to a simmer-boil of about 185 F degrees. This is where lots of barley sized bubbles are coming up, but the water has not come to a 212 F degree rolling boil. There are several states of boiling, but it's important to remember that a temperature of 175 will destroy all active bacteria, yeast, and fungi, and 185 degrees is plenty hot for most cooking needs. I have no doubt the Candlelier can get 2 cups of water in a small pot with a tight fitting lid up to 212 F, but I believe it would take so long as to not be worth it. It's also important to remember that if you want to try boiling water with your Candlelier, you should use a small 750ml class pot with a tight fitting lid. If you leave the lid off, it's never going to boil. If you use a standard cooking pot from the kitchen, it'll probably never boil. And remember, it should get up to an 185 F simmer-boil in an hour or so, but it might take a great deal longer to get up to a 212 F rolling boil. Luckily, for almost all practical purposes, 185 F should work fine. Addendum: My boil test was performed at sea level in a 70 F room. Your mileage will vary depending on altitude and ambient temperature. UCO is a Seattle based company so when they say it will boil water, I believe they mean at sea level. I have no idea how long it would take to boil 2 cups of water at higher elevations. The Candlelier should never be your first choice for cooking in a disaster scenario. However, if you have a Solo Stove, Sterno cans, etc, and don't feel like going outside to use them, and you have time to kill, the Candlelier will step up to the plate, while at the same time putting out a worthwhile amount of light and heat and seriously cheering the place up. ... show more

  • It Is As It Purports To Be
Color: Aluminum
This is a cute little item that I'd been eyeballing for a couple of years. People were saying that it is extremely well made. Well, it's not bad at all, but I wasn't overwhelmed like some were. I bought the silver one, which doesn't seem powder coated, and it was a few bucks cheaper, so maybe that's why the "underwhelm." Don't get me wrong, it's quite sturdy enough. And it burns nice and hot. I've seen many videos showing the temperature differential between outside the tent/camper/off grid cabin and inside. Right now, since I love gadgets, and winter is coming (and that means diminished opportunity for camping -- curse you, state parks that close), I use it at my kitchen table to simulate the ambience and warmth of a campfire. The proprietary candles that fit in the sockets are expensive. I burned up the ones that came with the item post haste and had to find a resupply of 20 for $26. My husband was annoyed, and thought he could research a better deal. 2 days later, and he's still trying to figure it out. Still, I do like this item a lot, a d agree with all the positive reviews regarding "old school." It will definitely heat your can of soup, but "cooking" is out of the question. My wish? That this is company would engineer a 5 or 6 candle candelier to really create heat. Would that be feasible? ... show more
