I had a new, elevated deck built from the ground up, in the summer of 2021. The old deck (25 years) was made of treated wood that was spintering. The new one is constructed of TimberTech composite planking with powder-coated black steel balusters supporting the top railing. It is the densest, costliest, and heaviest of all manufacturers' composite planking. It is essentially, a dense, non-porous plasticized/wood material which is maintenance free, but is easily cleaned. After several grillings on my new deck, I noticed that the edge of the top railing, which is directly behind the top of the firebox and rear vent of the grill, and which is the same TimberTech composite as the deck planking, was rippling as from heat damage. The grill had been only about 4" from the top railing. Since then, I'd been pulling the grill away from the deck edge toward the center of the deck (3 - 4'), to avoid further damage (which was slight) to the deck rail. I ordered this item so as to be able to leave the grill positioned relatively closer to the place it had been, nearer the railing. The Amazon sales page states, "To resist the heat from the grill and protect the railing from heat damage, we design the heat shield mat." I was expecting this heat shield to be somewhat thick and fibrous. I was surprised when it came and I discovered that it is quite thin 3-4 mm). It is constructed of what the manufacturer/distributor described as "fiberglass with silicone coating on both sides." I guess that the fiberglass is sandwiched between two, thin layers of a high-temperature silicone laminated to a cloth substrate. What confused me was that on the Amazon sales page for the item, the Material is described as "Polyester." I mounted it using zip ties which was fairly easy, because the mat has conveniently positioned grommets along its edges, but I noticed that while just installing the heat shield mat under a blazing sun, the mat became uncomfortable to deal with because it became hot just from sunlight exposure. I wondered if it was up to the job it is claimed to survive. Just as a precaution now, when I use it, I've got the backside of the grill about 10" away from the railing, just in case (but, I got 12 square feet of my deck back, more room for entertaining). I will follow up after I've grilled several times, with a report on the condition of the railing and balusters behind the grill, covered with the heatshield mat. ... show more

This grill heat shield does a great job of protecting your house or other surface from the heat of a propane grill or outdoor stove. It comes with rivets evenly spaced every 12” along each side. There are 4 on each of the short sides and 5 on each of the long sides. The shield has a nice, finished hem on all edges and is made from heavy duty fire-resistant material. We got magnetic hooks to attach it to the front of a garage door that we don't open. It does a great job, and we don't have to worry about the grill being too close to the front of the door. In the winter we will move it to the greenhouse so we can protect the greenhouse walls from our propane cooker as we convert the greenhouse to an outdoors canning kitchen.     • thick material for heat shield
A recent grill fire made me realize that the deck rail behind by grill could use a protective cover to prevent damage. Luckily there was no damage from the fire. This thick heat shield gives me more confidence in utilizing the grill without risk to the deck railing.

This heat shield works great behind my pizza oven, I was a little concerned about the heat it puts out damaging my wall, but this shield mat eliminates all of that fear. Now I can relax & enjoy hot pizzas whenever I want without hot walls. Right now I hang these on hooks so I can easily put it behind my grill or my pizza oven, then remove and roll it up for storage.     • I bought this heat shield for the back of my 48" Monogram Cooks stove.
I am currently under a kitchen remodel and have a 48" Monogram range with a full and size oven. This stove will put off some heat, so I wanted to further protect the wall. So I hung this before putting the stove in. I placed it at the edge of the stovetop so it is hidden behind the oven and it covers the area very well.
