  • Great car and fort shovel!
Style: AutoBoss Emergency Car Shovel
Good compact shovel for the car. I find it much easier to use than a small traditional shovel. I had purchased a small traditional shovel for my son that was effectively the same size but it was awkward for him to use. Especially if you get your load off centered. I gave him this one and he was off to the races. As if we had giant snow moles, tunnels appeared everywhere. Needless to say I now own 3. One for each car and one for my son. The achilles heel of this shovel is ice and hard packed snow. It is plastic and has a flat blade, so it is pretty useless it this regard. You also won't be using it to pry or lever anything. If you really need to deal with that, this will still do the one thing a spetsnaz shovel can't, move snow. ... show more

  • Excellent Snow Shovel
My trusty snow shovel broke towards the end of February 2015. I could hardly blame it after the record-setting amount of snow we received here in the Boston area. Though spring was around the corner, I knew I needed another shovel just in case more snow fell. Luckily, I did make this purchase, because sure enough, we did get more snow. Nothing over a few inches, but so far, I am very pleased. And as a life-long New Englander, I think I have pretty high standards for snow shovels! First, the blade is nicely curved, so the snow gets scooped into the blade as you push it along the ground. What I especially like is that you can scoop a good amount of snow in one push. Second, the steel wear strip works great. It makes for smooth movement over my driveway, and I can clear the snow right down to the blacktop. Third, the shovel is not too heavy. We literally have a 4-to-5-foot snow bank on either side of our driveway because of all the accumulated snow this season. I wouldn't say it's "easy", but I am able to use this shovel to throw snow over the tops of the snow banks. (I am a 5' 6" female, not especially fit, but not exactly out of shape either. Manually shoveling snow is probably the most exercise I get all year!) This product boasts a "unique VersaGrip" handle which is kind of hard to see in the product photo, but basically, there's a bend in the middle of the handle. So far, I haven't noticed it being especially comfortable on my hands or anything, but it doesn't bother me, either, so I think it's fine. As I mentioned, I didn't get this shovel until the end of the snow season, so I don't know yet how sturdy this shovel will be under the weight of heavy, wet snow, or whether or not the steel wear strip will work effectively in helping to break up that layer of ice that sometimes builds up on the driveway. Still, I'm willing to give this product 5 stars now because it's doing a great job so far, and I suspect that it will hold up. I do tend to keep up on my reviews, so if I make any new discoveries in the coming winters, I'll be sure to update this review. Now, I want to say, I'm big on online shopping, and I'm always careful to read reviews before making a purchase. This shovel surprised me because it looked really great, but at the time I bought it, there were only a handful of reviews. I jumped over to the web site of a major home improvement retail chain, and sure enough, they had dozens of reviews on this product - and all were positive. If there still aren't a ton of reviews here when you look at this product, try checking out reviews on other sites. UPDATE 3/4/2015: Last night, we got a few inches of snow, then rain. That makes for a very wet, very heavy slush. This shovel felt sturdy under the weight, and held up fine. ... show more

  • How good is this shovel? I really don't know...
Style: 18-Inch Aluminum Blade - Steel Handle
Since I was snowbound here in town and unable to get off my hill down to a local Home Depot or Lowe's (who probably would've been cleaned out by then, anyways), I got the bright idea to use the internet and ordered this shovel from Amazon, and let UPS do the driving. I thought I'd get in a couple of days since I'm a Prime customer, and this white stuff was supposed to stick around for several more days, anyways. Great deal, right? well, I couldn't have been more wrong. Amazon shipped it out promptly, and lo and behold it was in town within a day or so. And there it sat in a local terminal, because it turns out the carrier used for this, Fedex, was nearly as crippled as I was in terms of driving around in all this snow and ice. Worse yet, as I sat here at home fuming over where the @#$!#&@&** my new snow shovel was as the snow was piling ever deeper, Fedex apparently decided that it (the shovel) really needed to get in tune with Elvis and sent it on a vacation to Memphis, TN(!), where again it sat for a few days before coming BACK to Seattle. By now all hopes of actually USING this shovel has fallen by the wayside, since most of the snow was turning itself into H2O by the time the thing got back into town. But believe it or not, the WORST part is still yet to come, since the shovel again SAT in Fedex's warehouse for nearly another week. Yesterday, Jan. 2, I finally complained to Fedex directly (avoiding asking Amazon about yet again, since they don't seem to have much interest--or pull with Fedex--to try to figure out what in blazes is going on). Guess what...I got a Saturday delivery, Jan. 3, of the wayward, vacationing snow shovel! Er...big whoop. So, now I have no snow to try it on, so I can't discern whether or not this thing was worth the headache and aggravation I endured in getting it here. Instead what I've learned is that I lost complete faith in Fedex as a delivery service (they also managed this holiday season to lose a set of 5.1 surround sound speakers I ordered as well). I've also learned that Amazon's customer help department--at least in terms of wandering snow shovels--wasn't much in the way of help after all; perhaps there's not all that much snow in Bangalore, or wherever Amazon offshored their CS department to. And I've learned that you really CAN'T fully rely on the internet to get the job done when the chips are down. Brick & mortars still have their rightful place in this world, even if those wimpy cable tire chains didn't make it any easier to get down to them during the worst of the snow. (I could've walked down to one, I suppose, but it was so warm and SAFE sitting here behind my keyboard). Back on topic, what I CAN say about the shovel is this: the painted finish is pretty cheap; the blade came pre-scratched down to bare metal. It's lightweight, and the aluminum blade seems AWFULLY thin. As much as I hated (and huffed and puffed) using my totally inadequate 9" flat-edged steel shovel with its too-short handle for clearing off the various walks and drives around the house, it at least has the heft to stand up to the use and abuse. I'm not so sure I can say the same thing about this True Temper model. Next time it snows around here (hopefully NEVER), I'll amend this review...as long as I can REMEMBER where the $#%%*&! I stashed this blasted thing in the meantime. UPDATE (I finally got some snow to use it on): it works quite well, but I have to say that the blade does seem awfully soft and could dent quite easily; I'm not sure how this unit would do if the fall had been quite a bit heavier than the couple of inches that I had used it on. But the shovel's relatively light weight made it feel less fatiguing, and the 18" blade did cut quite a broad swath through the white stuff. ... show more
