  • ** Buyers Beware- Poorly made, Comapny makes you pay shipping to return under warranty for defective product. **
Color: Black
Games don't fit well in top slot. Also, after about one year of owning it and very little use, the part of the casing that connects the power cord, broke on the inside, so you can no longer attach the power cord. This is poor workmanship. Update: Pros: I contacted Hyperkin directly concerning the one-year warranty and even though it is slightly past the one-year mark, they are going to go ahead and replace my unit with a new one. Con: Even though the reason for replacing the unit is that it is defective/poor workmanship, Hyperkin is still requiring me to ship back my original unit to them, at my cost, rather than sending me a pre-paid shipping label, like just about any other company would do, especially when resolving their own defective product. It does not seem right to charge the customer to ship back a defective product under the warranty, however it is apparantly their company's policy to do so and it is listed as such in their warranty details. So, future potential buyers beware: This product is made very poorly and though they have a one-year warranty, they will make you pay shipping cost to return their defective unit to them, to process the warranty claim. When I addressed how this did not seem right to their warranty representative, he basically said he understood my point of view, but that this is what they require of all of their customers. I am going to return the product under warranty and then they may lose me as a future customer. I told them this potential and that I was writing this review and they did not seem to care, valueing the cost of a shipping label above the loss of their customers. Buyers Beware!! ... show more

  • Very good for the price but not at all perfect.
Color: Black
This system is a good, cheap replacement if your original NES is dead. I tried to fix my old NES, but nothing seems to be able to bring it back to life. So I tried one of these clones, since the price is affordable. I have all my old games and controllers, which are all compatible. As long as your cartridges are clean, the games boot up like a charm! One nice feature is that it upscales the graphics to HD, so you get a clearer picture than your old NES could ever give you on your modern TV. There is a very slight smoothing or rounding on pixels, but I don’t mind it. The unit itself is very sleek and cool looking, and comes with a decent controller. I like the feel of it better than my originals. It also comes with all the cords you need to connect it to power and the TV. The pin connection grip on the games is a little tight, but not ridiculous. I wish the games slid deeper into the unit so they could have a more secure feel to them. It feels a little flimsy with just the tip of the games stuck in there. Now for the bad news for you purists out there. The color and audio is “off” compared to the original system. The original NES hardware had particular color programming. So based on the cartridge playing, it was never always the same shades. So Hyperkin and clones similar to this have to select a color palette for all games to work from. Basically, on this system the colors are all a shade or two off or sometimes swapped. The flesh-tones are most noticeable to me. For instance, the beige and tans are orange, and the light peach is completely bright white. The sound effects and music are off-pitch. For some like my wife, these inconsistencies are not a deal breaker. She just wants to play the games and doesn’t care much about it. For myself, it is a little painful to hear the sounds you grew up with, getting played differently. It’s like when your favorite song comes on the radio and then you realize it’s that crappy cover by that other band. However you have to balance these inconveniences with the price of the system. If you want a modded NES that can output HD, or a high quality, accurate clone system, you will be paying much, much more money. This RetroN allows me to play my games instead of letting them collect dust, so overall I recommend it, but if you are a retro game purist, this might not be up to your standards. ... show more

  • Nostalgic NES seekers - this is the system for you!
Color: Black
Just received my Hyperkin today and I have to report that it is worth every penny. Having missed the whole Nintendo Classic Mini fiasco, I bought this system as a reasonably priced replacement for it. I'm happy to report that it arrived in perfect condition, was very easy to hook up, and works like a charm. Only have four games for it - Popeye, Donkey Kong Classics, Burger Time, and Super Mario Bros. 3 - and found that all four so far work perfectly. One note though, I did clean the connections before I played them just to be on the safe side so I would recommend doing this. As a casual gamer who hasn't played a NES game since probably the early 90's and was looking to "relive the nostalgia", this does the job. I didn't notice any lag to the game play, and I know that some people have mentioned the color differences but I'd have to compare the two side by side to even notice them and they really don't make much of a difference to me for what I want the system for. To all of you that missed the Nintendo Classic and are, like me, just looking to play the original NES games again, I can recommend this system. I can't wait to get more games and play them again! ... show more

  • It works.
Color: Black
Having had a bad experience with another NES clone, I approached the RetroN with few expectations. The other clone I tried had a very tight cartridge slot and died after just a few days of use. Not cool. The Retron has a much better slot, although the cartridges are not well supported when in the machine. As a result, this would not hold up around kids very well. I also recommend not leaving the cartridges in the console when not in use. The picture is acceptable, though some colors are strikingly off, such as the faces on the spiky stone booby traps in SMB3 being a might too blue and Mario's face too white. I haven't tried Punch Out but I suspect Mario's face would look washed out. The sound is fine, though if you really scrutinize, the pitch is slightly off. Hey, for $28, you can play NES over HDMI and you get a decent controller too. I just paid over $30 just for a special cable to do that with my SNES. If you are really picky about perfection, you can go spend $400 on an FPGA console. I personally would rather spend the other $370 on games. ... show more
