  • Excellent. Does the job!
This is an amazing machine. I wanted to have one for a long time and now I wonder why I waited! Essentially this machine punches holes into papers so that you can thread a spiral binding through the holes. This comes with a little clipper so you can clip the spiral rings and crimp them. You will need to buy your own spiral binders. Some things to think about: What kind of binding do you want? Comb binding is big and plastic. This one is a spiral binder. I wanted this type of binding because it seems like it would last longer than the plastic comb binding and it is easier to use when you want to flip pages back and forth. The number of holes per inch you want in your papers. It is my understanding that a 4 to 1 ratio is traditional and that is what this machine does. The number of pages you can punch with the machine you buy. This one says about 15 sheets if you are using typical typing paper/printing paper. I would say that is fairly accurate. I didn't count the number of papers, I just simply grabbed a small pile and punched. When I got too many papers I found I had to stand up and apply some pressure to get the puncher to complete the job. Do you want a special threader? This one does not have it. This machine is also a little bit cheaper than ones that have a special threader. Once i watched a few videos I felt comfortable buying this machine and saving myself some money. Essentially you punch holes in your paper, clip them together with a binder clip or two, then you twist the spiral into the little holes. Once you get it through the first hole, it twists right on. I was able to put together 5 books with over 200 pages in less than an hour while watching tv. It was that easy. i have put together my own daily journal and I plan on doing my own cookbook wiht all my saved recipes that I have stashed here and there. I have put together several spiral books for others and there are many other ideas. ... show more

  • Coil Binding is great and this TruBind Coil-Binding Machine is excellent!
For the past 25 or so years I have been using a comb-binding machine for creating my own music books, or for cutting music books apart and rebinding so they will actually stay open on the music stand (don't music publishers ever think their customers actually want to use the music books they buy?). Until now -- coil binding is so much better than comb-binding! When the teeth of a comb binding pull out (as they inevitably do) and get bent, they can be a real bother to put back and I often simply need to put a new comb on the book. Coil binding eliminates that problem and it is so much easier to pull a coil out of a book if something needs to be added or removed or changed. This TruBind TB-S20 machine is easy to use, takes up only a tiny bit larger space on the shelf or table, and best of all, it is affordable! The coils are a bit more expensive than combs, but with the large variety of sizes and colors, they can be used to great effect and they won't break or need replacing the way that combs do. The one thing that this machine lacks is any instruction on how to use the pliers to cut and crimp the ends of the coils once they are in place on the book. HOLD THE PLIERS SO THAT THE RED DOT IS ON TOP AND IS FACING TOWARD THE BOOK. INSERT THE COIL AND SQUEEZE THE PLIERS SHUT AND THE EXCESS COIL IS CUT OFF AND THE REMAINING END IS CRIMPED SO THAT AS THE COIL TURNS IT WON'T COME OUT OF THE BOOK. If you need to remove the coil simply use a small pair of needle-nose pliers to straighten the end of the coil and then twist it out of the book. There's no need to buy the more expensive coil-binding machines which have electric coil inserters. It is so easy to simply twist the coil through the book by hand and this machine can be used anywhere -- it doesn't need any electricity. It makes me wonder why I didn't buy one years ago! ... show more

  • Spend a few minutes practicing on scrap paper to save some aggravation!
So far so good! I like to purchase PDF versions of textbooks and print/tab the chapters that I need. Makes studying much easier in that you can fold the pages back flat. If you don't need to make more than 10 coil bound books in total, save the money and go to an office supply store/Kinkos. If you're doing more than 10, it's cheaper to buy this thing and do it yourself. This thing appears to be built well; it's heavy and feels solid. It definitely feels like it will last for years. It's quite large - forget about trying to keep it in a desk drawer. It's about the size of 4 reams of paper stacked on top of one another, and about a ream and a half wide. If you have more than a few pages, it takes a bit of effort to get the handle down. Hardly herculean strength, but just a bit more than a normal hole punch. The wide handle lets you use both hands to accomplish this easily. I'd recommend practicing on a few sheets of scrap paper to make sure everything is set correctly. There is a guide you can adjust, as well as a tab on the back left corner of the machine that adjusts how far away from the edge of the page the holes are (see photo). That's pretty much it. Your first 20 pages or so will have some oil residue on them from manufacturing - make some punches in scrap paper to soak up the excess and you won't have any issues on your finished product. The only con - if you're making a large book it's going to take a few minutes. I spent about 10 minutes to punch and insert the coil in a 250 page book. It's mindless work though - so you can watch a video, take a phone call, or listen to a podcast while punching holes. ... show more
