Description

Solid Brass Gorget French Infantry WWI WWII Civil War Armor is a Solid Brass French Infantry piece of Armor, as well as a WWI, WWII, and Civil war symbolic piece of armor. During WWI, WWII, the Civil War, and throughout the history of the French Infantry, the gorget was used as a piece of Infantry Armor to protect the throat of an infantry soldier, and the solid brass gorget became a symbolic piece worn by the French Infantry. This was also used during the Civil War Era, and was also given as a gift to Native American Leaders. During the fur trade, this was used by the French and Birith military to protect their neck. The Gorget was also used as armor during the Civil War Era, and was also given as a gift to Native American Leaders. Historically, the gorget was armor used to protect the throat of an infantry soldier against swords and other weapons. The gorget armor was made of metal (originally steel) worn under other armor worn by an infantry soldier (breastplate, backplate, etc.). In the 18th Century, the solid brass gorget became a symbolic ornamental piece worn by the French Infantry. The gorget also became a badge of rank (especially in solid brass, as compared to the orginal steel) in most European armies, including the French Infantry. By that time, the gorget was made of solid brass as it was more ornamental than the original gorget armor used to protect the neck and throat. In WWI and WWII, the German Military and police also used the solid brass gorget as an emblem of authority. Like this solid brass gorget, the gorgets during the WWI and WWII period were flat solid brass, worn around the neck. Today, the Mexican and Chilean infantry still use the gorget, but not as armour.

  • Worth more than asking price.
First, let me say that this is a fantastic product. I was surprised to get something so nice for the price. Now let me say that their history of the gorget is waaaay off. It has nothing to do with the American Civil War. It has everything to do with the colonial period. This item will not protect your throat unless you're 5 years old. Gorget of the period represented by this item had shrunk in size and were decorative only. They were worn by officers of French and British armies as well as by Prussian mercenaries and Native American leaders a casting of this quality (very minor imperfections around holes) would have been given to Indians. It could be either French or British Indian trade but for military use by whites it is more in line with the French style. ... show more

  • Exactly what I was looking for.
The gorget has a highly polished brass finish which can be engraved to match many purposes such as initials, a family or unit crest. It also lends itself to numerous methods of suspending the piece from the neck. Good buy. I also bought one as a gift for a friend.
