Description

A compact nylon string guitar you can take anywhere The ultra-light nylon is the smallest, lightest full-scale nylon-stringed acoustic/electric travel guitar ever made. Our proprietary In-Body tuning System uses standard tuning machines relocated into the body to create a guitar that has a full-scale neck, yet is substantially shorter than full size guitars. The lack of a headstock and a small, ergonomic body allow the guitar to be 20% lighter and 29% shorter than a full size classical, all while preserving the same full-scale playing experience you’re used to. Complete With a Traveler acoustic piezo pickup and a standard 1/4-inch output, you can plug this guitar directly into your favorite amp or recording device. The guitar weighs less than three pounds and is only 28 inches long, so it can go wherever you go. The lap rest can be removed for storage and transportation, allowing the guitar to fit easily in an airline overhead compartment in the included gig bag. The Traveler Guitar ultra-light nylon is the perfect solution for traveling players unwilling to compromise on scale length, but still looking for the smallest and lightest solution available. • best practice tool ever, imnho
Color: Mahogany Style: Black Walnut Fretboard Pattern: Guitar
Given it's size, weight & travel role, this ax is *great*. If you want sublime acoustic tones, or ergonomic perfection or a well balanced body from this thing, you don't "get it". I bought it to take guitar & jazz trio classes at community college more easily. The sound is good - with my AFX preamp, the sound is great. The neck is a pleasure, the action was good, right out of the box. This thing is for travel, practice & fun, but if my Cordoba got sat on by my drummer, I could finish a set with the Ultralight. • Nice wide fretboard
Color: Maple Style: Black Walnut Fretboard Pattern: Guitar + Amplifier
I don’t like the design overall, with the blocky solution for managing strings on the back. The exposed blocks and gears like to catch on things. I have a different model travelling guitar that handles this much better (and looks much nicer, franfly). Otherwise, this is a nice, quiet little model to learn on. The fretboard is nice and wide, and the pickups deliver a reasonably good sound through an amp. The kit bag is nice and compact as well, and I like that the leg rest is connected, snugly, without need for screws. ... show more

  • Almost perfect practice tool
Update: I have lugged this around on planes for 2 years now. Stuffed it in the back of the overhead bins, with carryons in front. Never had an issue with bringing it along or stowing it. Recently forgot to take it out and had to have the airline ship it to me. Carrier lost it and it bounced around in the system for 2 weeks! Happy to report that it still looks and feels like on the day I bought it. This is a very sturdy instrument! Original review (2016): I bought this recently, and here are my first impressions after playing on (with) it for a while. The basic guitar feels very solid. It is surprisingly heavy when you pick it up. So far, I have no issues with the tuning - all 6 strings tune smoothly and stay tuned as nicely as my regular guitar. The leg rest is very useful to get it up to a more typical playing position. And although it doesn't appear so, the strings and fretboard are where you would normally expect them. The neck is a tiny bit narrower than a normal classical guitar, but it is not a big issue. After fiddling around with the setup a bit, I now find this to be a very useful practice tool for when I am traveling or don't want to make a lot of noise in the house. While you can hear the strings being plucked, it is about as loud as an electric guitar without amplification. Speaking of amplification and sound: after experimenting for a bit, I settled on the headphone amplifier made by Electro Harmonix Electro-Harmonix Headphone Amp Portable Practice Amp . Very neutral, and very sturdy (metal enclosure). The direct plug-in amplifiers (e.g. Vox) don't work for me because the output is resting on your leg if you play in classical guitar position. The iPhone/iRig solution is just too messy (too many cables) and the slight delay isn't good for practicing. The Shadow pickup is extremely sensitive. Whether you find this a positive or a negative is a matter of taste: I like it as I will hear even the tiniest mistakes I make in plucking and every little bit of string buzz I create. So it's great for practicing. If you want to perform with this, you may find it a little bit too unforgiving. The gig bag is sturdy too and has an outside pocket that is big enough to hold the leg rest, spare strings, an amp cable and some other small utensils. It also has a single adjustable shoulder strap, which makes it easy to carry along. Here's what I think could be improved: - The leg rest is extremely slippery and tends to slide around on the pants. I dealt with that by wrapping the bottom part with some silicon tape. Now it stays nicely in place. - It would have been nice if this had a headphone amplifier. Although the sound of this guitar isn't really comparable to a classical guitar, the strings ring out nicely - which you can't hear without a headset. There is a 1/4" output which can be used to connect to an amplifier. But if you play in classical guitar position, the jack will rest on your leg, making any connection very awkward. A headphone jack on the top would be the way to go. - A second rest on top for the arm would have been nice. Without it, your right arm has to float in the air, making it a bit more awkward to play. (I now find myself resting my right arm on my right leg to play. Messes with my posture, but at least it works.) This also negatively affects - Stability. The only way to get this stable in your lap appears to be by using a strap. There are two strap buttons, but the one in the middle is useless. Find a strap with a loop on one end - if the loop is not too wide, it will fit under the strings at the top of the neck. In summary, this is great for someone who wants to keep practicing while they are traveling but don't want to (or can't) take a full size guitar with them. This is the smallest solution that still provides a full scale neck. And it looks sturdy enough to survive airline overhead bins. I'll be taking it overseas this summer, and I will follow up if that leads to any problems. ... show more

  • Good addition
Color: Maple Style: Black Walnut Fretboard Pattern: Guitar
I got the Maple ultra-light nylon to carry while traveling. I also got the corresponding amp. Besides the obvious great size and portability, the guitar feels simple but well built, it's very smooth to the touch. The action was perfect. The sounds is clear and fairly neutral, not a lot of personality/tones/colors but that is ok given the build of the instrument. I feel that this guitar "suffers" from the endowment of the original steel-string acoustic design - in other words, it's not designed by a nylon player or with nylon strings in mind. The width at the nut is less than what a nylon player is used to and the truss rod, arguably not necessary in a nylon guitar, further increases the weight imbalance consequence of the body-less ultra-light design (the neck is heavy compared to the body and "falls" to your left hand, which makes your hand slower). Last but not least if you use the body of the guitar during your play (for example Flamenco players), doing this is challenging in the ultra-light given the placement of the tuners. Overall I'm satisfied with the purchase, as a nylon guitar it could certainly be improved but it's good enough and the instrument tradeoffs give you a nice travel companion. ... show more

  • A really great purchase
This is one of the most pleasing purchases I've ever made. The neck and fingerboard feel as good or better than any of my other classical guitars and they're mostly solid rosewood or maple bodied guitars with ebony fingerboards. It's beautifully constructed, but if you want to hear what you're doing you'll need a headphone amp. I got a VOX AC30 (the newer G2 version with the 180-degree swivel jack) for about $35-ish; I use it with earbuds. It's half the size of a pack of cigarettes and fits easily into the side pouch. One thing that takes getting used to is the odd shape. I didn't appreciate how I normally hug my guitars into a stable position for playing. It's not just that this has no body to anchor onto, but it's neck heavy, so at first I had to support the neck with my left hand while trying to play. Even after I put a strap on it I initially had some trouble, but after a couple of hours I stopped noticing. In fact, playing this way tends to improve my playing posture because it forces me away from trying to look at the face of the fingerboard while I play. But of course it's meant to be small for travel. So I showed the guitar in its case to staff at the hotel where I stay and asked them to guess what was in it. They all thought it was a folding pool cue. It's that small ... show more
