Description

For speed and production, but not necessarily quality, power tools are the norm in many amateur workshops. However, thanks to the maker movement, there is renewed interest among crafters and woodworkers in using traditional handtools. The personal satisfaction, the pleasure of hands-on work, and the more leisurely, contemplative approach to woodworking is replacing the need for the speed and noise of power tools. In Traditional Woodworking Handtools, the second volume in his Illustrated Workshop Series, Graham Blackburn has assembled a virtual encyclopedia of traditional woodworking handtools, including holding tools, saws, planes, edge tools, setting-out tools, boring tools, and striking tools. Each tool is listed and includes a full description of what it does and how it’s used. His engaging writing, which includes anecdotes from his four decades as a master woodworker, entertains as well as instructs. And the hundreds of line drawings of handtools are illuminating. While also a reference for anyone collecting or simply fascinated by handtools, Traditional Woodworking Handtools is a user’s guide for the woodworker and crafter, designed to help reintroduce many of these tried-and- true tools into today’s workshops. • Excellent discussion of hand tools and jigs

  • Not the best Blackburn Book
I am disappointed in this book. It did not meet my expectations. I have several books written by Mr. Blackburn, and this is the only one I can't recommend. The book lacks detail as to how to build many of the things featured in the book. It has good descriptions of various aspects of woodworking; lay out, cramps, squares, etc. But it doesn't go all the way. For example, he writes about a miter shooting block and includes a nice drawing of one. But there is no real description of sufficient detail to build one without doing some further research. this is the case in most of the descriptions in the book. So who should buy this book? I think someone needing a basic introduction to what is available to the hand tool woodworker would benefit from this book. It's worthwhile to the novice, but additional books or resources will be needed to build appliances, jigs and fixtures described in this book. ... show more

Great reference for traditional woodworking tools and their uses

  • Essentials for any woodworker.
I have been doing woodworking on and off for about 25 years, but this books has shown me what a lot of those old tools I inherited are for, and how to use them. Blackburn also does a good job of giving a history of those basic tools, how to make some of them, and even how to maintain them. This is an invaluable book for anyone interested in woodworking or collecting vintage tools. The only thing real critique I would have was the hand drawn illustrations. Though they fit with the topic, they sometimes lack accuracy enough to give a clear understanding of the tool. ... show more

  • Excellent for the beginner or advanced
I found blackburn's book to be extremely helpful in my woodworking, most of which I do with hand tools. The book is well organized and covers more info than most will ever use. His description of sharpening handsaws simplified the process exponentially for me, and now I follow his advice to sharpen my own saws. Blackburn's book reflects his extensive background in woodoworking and his simple writing style makes the book a pleasure to read and one you will go back to time and time again. Highly recommended as a basis for a woodworking library. ... show more

  • Useful Tome
Mr. Blackburn has created a comprehensive tome on hand tools for woodworking. The chapters are organized sensibly and the pictures are well suited to the prose. This is a great companion to his YouTube channel.
