It took me about 15 minutes to set the drive up (I have learned to be very ODC with any computer hardware installation over the last35 years). I plugged it in, did something else for maybe 30 seconds and looked... the power/usage light was on. Downloaded Backup Software, Revisions History and Manual with ease from the link supplied on the new HDD. After a couple of false starts (I had folders with Admin Only access), it is now dutifully backing up the internal SSI of my Laptop (now at 23% after 8 minutes to give you an idea of its speed). It is the easiest external HDD add I've ever done (except maybe my previous 1.0TB Toshiba that was stolen) by far. Could NOT have been simpler. Just follow the already loaded directions. Buy this one! (Toshiba Canvio Slim) without hesitation. Pass on cheaper ones. They're not that much cheaper and you'll pay for it over time. I had my previous Toshiba 1.0TB (earlier version obviously) for at least 6 or 7 years and it never faltered. Not once! After this glowing recommendation, keep in mind that I can be very tough on reviews if the product is marginal. If fact, I rated this as only 4 stars for Service (because I have NEVER needed to use it :) ) and Storage Capacity (only because 5.0TB HDD's are available now, that's why the price has dropped so dramatically... "Old Technology". I think this was about $70-$80 only less than six months ago, I paid $53). If you need more storage, you absolutely cannot miss with this choice! ... show more

Overall, this product is great at storing data and files as long as you can keep it intact. I've worked with similar portable hard-drives in the past, and the plug-in on the hard-drive itself is somewhat fragile. It is very likely to break if you don't take proper care of it (and still likely to break if you do). It may take a while, but if you don't store it in a safe space, it is likely to break. You get a wire with this hard-drive. One end of that wire is USB, which you plug into the computer. The other end of wire is used to plug into hard-drive itself. If you don't take care to store it properly, the place where you plug this wire into is likely to break. You should try to avoid stuffing this device into a bag full of things that could jiggle the hard-drive plug-in and should always try to avoid any sort of motion that could wiggle the plug-in out of its port within the device. As long as you can do that, this device will likely last you a long time and is a great way to store back-ups of files. Highly recommended for people that want to backup data and files. ... show more

I own a similar Toshiba 2TB Canvios that died after 2 years, which I considered not a long usage. This new 2TB drive stopped working after 2 weeks, it's constantly disconnecting from my laptop, sometimes data cannot be read. Now I'm really disappointed in the quality of Toshiba HDDs. Reached out to Toshiba on the phone but was not helpful. My review won't change unless they offer me a usable one that I can trust to put my data in. ... show more

Don't be mislead by the USB3 interface. The sustained write speed on this device is ~ 2MB/sec (when attached to the USB2 interface of a high-end Dell workstation). USB2 has a theoretical speed of 60MB/sec. I'd expect at least a transfer speed of 20MB/s (when nothing else is doing any I/O on that entire root hub); what I get is 10 times worse. The I/O speed in this case seems to be limited by the device, not the interface. This is for sustained writes while taking a backup, which I supposed would be a common usage. Random reads might benefit from from internal cache; I don't know. ... show more

I like this handy device. It seems to work efficniently as a drive and deals with storage and usage well. However, within the second week of usage, it was hindered and needed to be scanned and repaired. I am hoping that this is a one-time only instance and not something that is going to be recurring. And it took only two minutes to install, it is now blinking away, presumably backing up everything on my iMac.
