  • Comparative Review
This is a review of the ES-31 with comparisons to the ES-30. Having owned and traveled with two ES-30s and one ES-18 over the last fours I feel I have the experience to give some input. I am 74 and weigh 240 lbs. I have used these devices mainly on cruises which required them to be transported on airlines as well. I picked up an ES-18 online for $300 a couple of years ago and mainly had it for parts. After four years my ES-30 battery was showing signs of weakness so I decided to swap out the batteries. But as I pondered I decided to simply swap out the rear axles and would thereby have a new ES-30. I did this and used the conversion for several cruise trips. However the ES-18 frame, front fork, and steering seemed a little weak in comparison. I decided to splurge and purchased a new ES-31. The ES-31 had new nuances that I wasn't sure about having, but thought I would try anyway. The forward/reverse selector is basically useless and can be scary if it is in reverse and you were expecting to go forward. What little backing needed on this trike is so minor that this revision is not needed. Why have a 3 speed limit selector switch when you have a variable speed twist grip accelerator? This is an unnecessary item also. In "I" set I find myself having to twist the grip twice to actuate the forward motion. In other words nothing happens in that speed selection until I accelerate twice. "II" is not needed either, but will react immediately upon twisting the grip. "III" works just fine like it did before without the speed selection switch. I don't see the rear axle shock absorbers doing much as the pneumatic tires normally take the brunt of rough road impact. Perhaps it takes out some stress on the rear stanchion supporting the seat. The 18" (center of tire to center of tire) rear axles is overly wide and makes storage harder. Sure it gives more stability, but I don't feel it really adds that much. The ES-30 is 14 1/2" (center of tire to center of tire). Small difference but a big deal. It is harder to store in airline overhead storage bins and definitely harder to store in cruise cabin closets. Too wide to roll between airline seats. The fenders make it wider, so add another 1 1/2", and are a plus if you want to drive it in the rain; which, I never do, so they are not necessarily needed either. I had to adjust the fenders forward in order to pull the trike in folded up position. If pulling up stairs or up over a curb the fenders drag and scrape the concrete. The handle bar is wider also to accommodate the extra switches and their sizes. In the folded upright position the trike doesn't sit straight up like the ES-30, but rather tilts towards the seat side making it more unstable in that resting position. The new style seat is definitely an upgrade over the old ones. The ES-30 was a good product, but it seems perhaps the manufacturer went too far with an already excellent product by adding these extras. All other things are mainly the same, size of battery, motor, frame. UPDATE - The seller claims the delay in acceleration or double twisting of the power handle is a safety feature so it is normal. Also the charger gets extremely hot when charging. Seller states that is normal also. ... show more

  • Fits in airplane wheelchair compartment
This is now my Mobility device. I use this everyday when not wearing my prosthetic leg. I am able to get it in and out of my trunk on my own with ease. It is fun to zip around my job with getting where I need to go. The battery last pretty long as long as you turn it off when not moving. The only negative thing I can say is that the seat hurts like hell. I haven’t found one I like to switch it out with yet. I bet I’ve sold so many of these for TopMate. Every time a patient or patient families see me they want to know all about it and where I got it from. I let them take pictures and video of me riding it. Lol. This was truly an amazing investment. ... show more

  • Long term review
I would give the Topmate ES31 five stars, but my wife would give it two stars. Here is why, Me: 1) fits in truck of my Tesla Model 3 2) Easy to fold once you figure out the seat secret. 3) battery life is great for our trips. Even with long intervals between trips (holds Charge) 4) holds my weight which it more then the limit (built solid) 5) light enough for a disabled person (me) to lift and stow. Her positives all of the above. Problems for her opinion are due to her disabilities. 1) Hard to mount. Need to be able to lift foot high enough to step over rear axle or wide enough. 2) Balance, for some this maybe a issue. Especially when turning. Leaning in on turns is not a given for all. 3) Highly recommend the wider axle. Because of short wheelbase. Take very slow turns. The reason I down grade to a 4 stars is that it appears there may not be a BMS on the battery. After 3 years I accidently left the key on when storing it (my fault). The battery will not come back to life. So no low voltage cut off to safe it from stupid people like me. ... show more

  • Terrific.
I tool around town to buy groceries, etc...without having to drive my large car with parking hassles. I drive it right into the store. I fitted a large sturdy bag over the seat. Talking about seats, I had to buy a Schwinn seat at Walmart for $ 20.00 which makes a big difference. The factory one is narrow and hard. To ride this scooter you must ride it like a bike, tilting your body to turn at medium speed. also, my speedometer suddenly changed from miles to kilometers, with no means to turn it back to miles. other than that, I love this well-built scooter. Top speed is scary on the pavement but middle speed is nice. ... show more

  • Great scooter
Excellent scooter with many pros and a few cons Pros - light weight, folds easy, stable, good battery life, fast, has reverse setting, great design, mini monitor for battery life and speed, goes up hill with ease Cons - tires are plastic not rubber, the brake is not the best, the seat is terrible and useless This scooter would be a 5 out of 5 if the small cons would be upgraded. As mentioned, the seat sux and it was replaced with a great seat. Contrary to other comments, I disagree this scooter is unstable and does not tip during turns, unless you go at the fastest setting. I do not recommend this scooter for overweight and unbalanced individuals. I am 5ft 11 and 170lbs and I comfortably sit on it. Highly recommend this scooter just change the seat. ... show more

  • The seat that comes with it is too uncomfortable.. Had to replace before using it.
I used it to ride through all and I mean all the casinos on the strip and downtown. Was there from the 23rd of December to Jan. 1. We flew there and back on Southwest air. Though they had some scheduling issues, I had no problem going through security or them taking it on the plan. The unit performed flawlessly and only used half the battery charge each day. Most of the Terrain in Vagas is flat to slightly hilly outside the casinos and combination tile and rugs inside. There were various ADA ramps to negotiate around stair cases. Some were quite steep, but had no trouble using speed II. I Used speed I on hard tile floors wlth no grade and I used speed II for carpet, ramps and outside. Make note I only used speed III just once to show off to family members (what a thrill!). ... show more
