  • A good basic, simple machine
This welder is a little different than I expected, but not in a bad way. I'm not a professional welder. I've never used a wire feed welder prior to purchasing this welder. I have a fair amount of experience with stick welders. I purchased this to have something more versatile than the Zeny 160 stick welder I purchased last year. A multiprocess welder makes sense for a capable hobbyist. Did some looking around and settled on this one, seemed to have the best capabilities, cost, and other decent reviews. Unboxed and everything was there, except a roll of wire (which was not supposed to be there, my mistake). Put in a roll of E71T-11 went out and ran a couple test beads. This is when I figured out things were a bit simpler than I expected. The amperage knob is more of a set and forget knob; it controls amperage, voltage and wire speed. There is a chart in the manual that provides information on this. Being new to wire feed, this made the learning curve very short. I was able to get decent welds with good penetration very quickly and not worry about figuring out the wire speed and voltage. The upper knob does fine tune the voltage if necessary but this does not show on the display. After a couple test beads I spent the next 5 hours repairing some worn/damaged equipment and fabricating a firebox rack for my smoker. Running 100A or less I never surpassed the machine's duty cycle. Only had one minor instance of burn back. By the end of the day I had used about 3/4# of wire (0.030) and had all of my repairs done. It works, it works very well. It's a good learning machine. I think it is fairly easy to use. It's quite portable and light. A couple co-workers are very intrigued and thinking about buying their own. A couple of cons: The grounding clamp is kinda cheap and I replaced it with one from HF. The cables (ground and stinger) are on the short side. The wire feed cable is short too, but didn't cause any problems. ... show more

  • Well built, plenty of features.
Currently this is the best multi-function welder in this price range I've seen. I've welded a fair amount, an have/had high end Lincolns and Millers....still have my Miller 200A multi-process but I guess I'm a welder/plasma cutter hoarder :) So, check out the excellent power/performance specs. 60% duty cycle @ 250 amp MIG & Stick, 200A TIG. The actual machine only weighs 17 lbs! I measured true current deposition correlation with the displayed current, and it's within 5% of the rated display. BTW, it's inaccurate to simply put an amp-clamp on the MIG cable, then weld, thinking you'll get 100% of the displayed current to the plate, via a tiny .035" wire! I attached two 3/0 cables from the welder to a copper block. Don't do this very long...it's a dead short! This is one correct way to validate Amp delivery claims....this one is correct. But I did upgrade the ground clamp and Stick cables to 15' long and #1 copper cable but you don't need to do this. The power cable/plug is the correct way to have the 110/220V orientation, in that the larger 220V/50Amp plug is on the machine, and the adapter goes from the 220V to 110V plug configuration. The 50A plug can carry much more current/power than 110V, and I'm surprised other machines can get away with the other arrangement, since in the USA, that 110V plug is only rated for 15 Amps. The machine comes with drive rollers for solid MIG wire, flux core wire (knurled), and aluminum "U" shaped profile. The capability for a spool gun is great, and I have two spool guns set up for aluminum, and stainless. They also supply a graphene liner if you want to run aluminum through the machine, instead of using a spool gun. The mig/stick/tig all work very well. I sold one of my Miller AC tig machines, so for the times I need to weld aluminum with DC-tig, I have a tri-gas mix tank I hook up for shielding. Yes, you can weld aluminum with DC tig but the aluminum needs to be cleaned shortly before welding, and a gas mix, mostly helium, needs to be used, not straight argon as with aluminum MIG welding. AC tig reverses polarity, cleaning the surface at each cycle.....DC tig won't, so clean it well. Aluminum quickly forms an oxide layer, so basically you're trying to punch through a 3000F melt point "ceramic" to make the 1000F aluminum melt. So in summary: Portable, well built, plenty of accessories, spool gun ready, 250A/60% duty cycle, ample cable lengths for most people. Improvements? I don't care for the loud fan that runs continuously...plan to change it to a quieter fan. I've torn into the electronics, wish they went for a heavier power cable and 40A switching contactors, instead of 30Amp but not a big deal. So yeah, this can do most of what most weldors require of their machines. And unlike my $4000 Miller, if it were to get stolen or broken, I won't cry as long as with my Miller! ... show more
