Update: yes it does work without wifi so it can be taken on the go. Only you cannot download new tonies without the wifi connection Do yourself a favor and BYPASS setting up on the app. That does NOT work. We set it up with the laptop and it was connected in about 2 minutes. When you setup on the laptop they will tell you that you have to find the specific tonies "wifi" network. That is probably why it never worked with setting up on the app. They don't tell you that in any of the instructions on the app. Now that it's setup the kiddo loves it. The characters are so cute that they keep taking them to play with! It's so simple to use and setup new characters. Just pop them on or off and you are good to go. Child can easily turn the volume up and down. Will have to go into settings because they want to skip certain stories and songs and we haven't figured that part out. We haven't been out of wifi range with it so I don't know if it will play without wifi or not while we travel. But you can buy headphones (they sell one) to connect to it so your child can just listen to it alone. You can either leave it plugged in on the dock or once its charged take it off so the child can take it around the house. The sides are soft and padded. A great screen free device to have and if you wait for prime or black friday you can get it for an amazing price. Takes a little time to download the app and get it connected to wifi but that doesn't take away from the fact that kids love this. My child will sit and listen to her stories for what seems like ages. The amount of characters that you can find for this is endless. Long battery life and portability are also a plus and add in the interactive controls for volume up/down, fast forward and rewind, makes for a great interactive toy for children of all ages. ... show more

Update: Returned the one the wasn’t working/charging and got a new one and it works great my son loves it so much and so do I definitely worth getting one help with keeping them off screen time. My son likes to listen to the stories and dance to the music so it’s definitely a win win. Giving it a four star because after opening this Tonies Box for my sons Christmas present today he enjoyed it, I didn’t have any issues connecting it to my phone or wifi everything was going so well until time to charge it, I’m returning and attempting to buy another in hopes that I won’t have a charging problem like this one. Tried many outlets around the house and it won’t charge at all…. Which sucks because it was great until it said to plug in due to low battery but nope it just kept repeating the same thing for hours and won’t charge. That’s the only issue I’ve had day1 not even a fully day with it. I’m hoping the other one I ordered works great and it doesn’t disappoint me since we really did love it until that charging issue, and I got so many opened tonie that if it’s another disappointment with the new one I’d have return to many Tonies and it would suck. I bought this to help reduce screen time. Still working on the best use - my son gets excited and then wants to watch the show. I bought a train one directly, and he loves the model so much he won't leave it on the player. I think it will grow with him nicely.
