Venture into the Heart of Africa to build routes through some of the con- tinent’s most remote and desolate locales. Will you bolster your terrain surveying skills and local knowledge to try and establish more valuable routes—or dare to dash across the continent in a mad race to cut the game short? From the Manufacturer Introducing the 3rd volume in the Ticket to Ride Map Collection Vol. 3 - The Heart of Africa. Set in the vast wilderness of Africa at the height of its exploration by intrepid explorers, missionaries and adventurers, this new single-sided board map focuses on the central and southern heart of the continent displayed in a vertical format. This new map introduces 45 new Terrain Cards, divided into 3 different Terrain Types. Each Terrain Type is associated with different Route colors: Desert/Savanna cards for Yellow, Orange and Red Routes; Jungle/Forest cards for Green, Blue and Purple Routes; and Mountain/Cliff cards for Black, White and Grey Routes. Players can draw Terrain cards just like Train cards and they may use these to double the value of the routes they claim. Designed for 2-5 players, ages 8+, this expansion takes 30-60 minutes and requires Train cards and Trains from either Ticket to Ride or Ticket to Ride Europe.

My family has been playing Ticket to Ride in one form or another for almost a decade. We've got USA, Switzerland, India, London (the mini-version), and now Africa. To call us fans would be accurate. I'd lived in Africa as a child, so from a nostalgia standpoint this map had always intrigued me. Sadly, it's probably the weakest of the series, which was personally next to heartbreak. But when the bar is set so high, it's hard to be disappointed. First of all, this is an expansion pack -- you need a full-version of Ticket to Ride for all the pieces to play. This comes with a map and route cards. The city names reflect old colonial monikers which adds to the historic mood. As always, the material and print quality is spectacular. The attention to detail in the design is gorgeous. The board and cards are built to last. Every Ticket to Ride version has a gimmick and The Heart of Africa is no exception. This time around you have terrain types to consider: Desert/Savanna, Jungle/Forest, and Mountain/Cliff. You can draw terrain cards and spend them like regular route cards, doubling the value of your claimed route. I've had games decided by judicious use of terrain cards with bold players reaping big benefits. Sadly, it's just not as interesting as so many other entries in the series. The traffic jams are the same, and there is potential for some long routes and big scores, but it just hasn't grabbed our imaginations as much as the others. Not to say it's not fun... it IS. It's just that if you're new to the series I'd recommend checking out some of the other variations first.     • It's time for Africa !!
All our families enjoy playing this game, so we had couple of those variants. This new map is interesting with it terrain card which allow to double the points. Good game, I just wish they make the play cards with best quality do that they sustain multiple uses.

    • Bring Your "A" Game
The version REQUIRES you to own either TTR US or Europe to play. You'll need to be very strategic as the map isolates certain colored tracks to specific regions of the map. This makes it a much more competitive map as you'll have a limited time to claim vital routes to complete your tickets. Great buy if you're looking to make TTR even more competitive! ... show more

    • An enjoyable expansion
My son is a great fan of Ticket to Ride, so we often play together. It's at exactly the right level of gameplay for friendly family entertainment. We like this expansion, but it's not our favorite. The Asian expansion is a better deal. But if you have that, and you're looking for another interesting map, this is a nice addition. It features Sub-Saharan Africa and there are limited routes through the center of the map, so it can be more competitive for a multi-player game. My son and I play it with just the two of us, and we don't usually run into problems with that. It's a good map for a friendly 2-3 player game. The description in the catalog doesn't explain terrain cards very well, but they're actually pretty simple to understand when you read the rules. Basically, if you have enough for a particular route, they enable you to double the score you earn for claiming a route. The terrain cards add another level of choice and strategy which help keeps the game fresh and interesting, but they also enable you to run up the scores if there's a disparity among the players. That unbalances the game unless you're all similar in ability. It also means the 100 point scoring track isn't really long enough, so you have to keep track if you've lapped another another player. You don't need to use the terrain cards, so you can tailor the game to the people playing it, which is a plus. The physical components are beautiful and high quality. We enjoy the map and are learning some African geography too :) I would have preferred if the entire continent was on the map the way it is with the Asian expansion though. In short, this is a nice addition to the game, particularly if you're looking for something to freshen the game because you've played it a lot, but I recommend the Asian expansion before this one. ... show more

    • Great addition but not for "learning africa"
I have the original game which I love and I thought that I'd buy the other continents for 2 reasons: 1. others collect all the games so there must be some reason to want more of basically the same game. 2. I wanted to use it to help my son learn the main places in africa (we used the original one to learn where main towns in the US/Canada were) and my opinion? re: reason #1...There is one added dimension, which is fun, and of course a different map that has a lot of cities that I'm unfamiliar with so it really twisted my brain, which is good, I guess. But overall, I'm not sick of the first game enough to really need a second similar one yet. If I was in the mood for ticket to ride, I would have just as happily played the first one.... re: reason #2...Although my son over time might become more familiar with some important cities in africa over time and have a basic idea where they would be, I feel that knowing which country they are in is very important and the lines showing the different countries are not there. Also, many of the cities are ones that I don't feel he NEEDS to know, and finally, it's only the bottom half of the continent. end opinion: I like the game but wish that I would not have spent so much money on a game that didn't really fulfill my needs. I wish that it was all of africa, with countries identified, and only the most widely known cities in all of africa. ... show more
