  • Very rich bass for a slim design
Size: 8 in Slim
This subwoofer is very impressive. The specs of reaching as low as 35hz are honest for sure, and when placed in the right spot & position, even lower frequencies from 28-30hz are audible. Excellent for smaller size systems, as the trade off with the slim design is less boomy bass, but any decent bookshelf size speakers should be able to cover that area of sound. It has nice solid feeling switches & dials, and the gold plated inputs are nice. I tried using it standing upward & turned sideways facing a solid piece of furniture, but it performed much better when facing a wall (sideways or upright) or flat on the floor as the rich bass dispersed around the room better. I didn't try it mounted on the wall, but I'm sure mounted at the right height would provide nice bass around a small to medium size room. I have it standing upright on the separate support clips it came with, and have the speaker and bass port at the top to avoid the wires touching the speaker, and it sounds great. I can't vouch for the auto-on function as many subs have potential switching delay, and I just leave it in the 'on' position all the time since it's a Class D amplifier inside which uses almost no power when left on without a signal. The only cons are just overlooked stuff for the design, such as it can be tough to set properly on the separate plastic supports depending on where you're trying to put it, and... PS: The attached legs on the sub have no rubber, or anything soft to absorb vibration when placed on a hard floor or against a wall. I easily overcame this by attaching appropriate sized thick sticky felt pads that can be purchased in packs online or in many stores, to the bottom of the sub legs and vibration noise will never be an issue for me. One other thing is, since most setups these days only have a single sub output, I would recommend getting a good quality single sub cable, and using a short Y-splitter with 90° gold plated male ends for the sub. Make sure to use a splitter like the instructions specify, as an empty input will accept outside noise ... show more

  • Low Price of Admission to Good Sound!
Size: 8 in Slim
My long-term audio background made me skeptical of this item, but for the price, I thought I'd give it a try. I'm very glad I did. Certainly, it is not for a critical listening requirement, but for use in a modest two-channel home theater system I am putting together for my sweetheart, I can't see how it can be beaten. The inputs make it extremely versatile. An arrangement I'd never seen before allows connecting speaker output wiring from an outboard two-channel amplifier. That done, the unit's electronics pick up the low frequency signal from that amp, and send it to the subwoofer (really and strictly, woofer) amp. Separate outputs connections from the unit allow attachment of the wiring for the two satellite speakers (in this case, a set of Dayton Audio units). The gain and frequency controls on the unit are very effective. Ultimately, the volume of sound is controlled by the amplifier feeding output to the woofer unit. The whole thing works flawlessly. Insofar as the sound itself - impressive! The 8" woofer does a fine job on the low end. The enclosure design is evidently an acoustic suspension (sealed) type, which (in my opinion, anyway) gives more accurate bass than others, such as bass reflex (ported) designs. The amplifier is very robust, and at normal listening levels, never seems to strain in driving the speaker. Admittedly, the unit will not produce bone-crushing rumble at 120 db levels from movie tracks. For that, check out units having that capability - and, check the price that goes with them. For the capability this item has, and the price paid, I can't see how it can be beaten. I'm sure my sweetheart will be pleased when she hears the music and soudtracks this will bring to life, as compared with the basic speakers in her large-screen TV. Highly recommended! ... show more

  • Nice look and form factor, doesn't seem to pair well with satellites
Size: 8 in Slim
I bought two of these to use in my living room flanking my fireplace standing upright (I don't use the fireplace, so heat won't be a problem). They look great in this arrangement. I'd note that the shade of "wood" isn't quite as warm/saturated as represented in the photos, but I think part of it might be the oversaturated screens on modern phones that don't accurately depict reality. It's still nice, but it's not quite as orange/cherry as it appears in the pictures. I was planning to pair them with some Mirage NanoSat Prestige satellites, but that plan didn't last long. The Mirages are very small and only extend usefully down to about 120Hz. Unfortunately these subwoofers don't like playing much above 90Hz (it'll do it, it's just a bit sloppy and uneven-sounding), so it couldn't quite reach the satellites. For everything under that, though, they're pretty good. They won't blow you away in volume, and you shouldn't expect them to at this price point and form factor; but they round out the bottom end of medium to large bookshelf speakers very nicely. If you like chest-thumping, wall-rattling bass, you should shop for something larger and more powerful. These are a nice choice for extending and supplementing bass at reasonable levels, though. Extension is solid. One of my test songs is 'Good News' by Mac Miller as it digs really deep starting around the 1:10 mark. These, at least when paired and in a bass-friendly location, will dig all the way down to that almost-nauseating range (not sure exactly how deep, but I'm guessing somewhere around 25Hz at its deepest) with respectable authority at moderate volumes. I was pleasantly surprised. I've since supplanted the Mirages (which were too diffuse-sounding for the room anyways) with some Dayton Audio MK402s and it's a terrific experience. These subs do work well with speakers capable of running the show down to 90Hz or so. In summation, I do recommend these as long as you're not expecting to shake your windows.
