  • The Pioneer of the Psychology of Fashion
"The Psychology of Fashion" is a comprehensive overview of psychology applied to dress. It is the work of a professional who truly knows whereof she speaks. But, this book is absolutely readable. It is useful and thought-provoking not only to anyone in the social sciences, but to anyone who wears clothing! This book is an insightful overview into the application of psychology to fashion. Dr. Mair's stellar history of work as the globally-recognized creator of the sub-discipline of psychology applied to fashion provides the base for this book. It stands above and apart from superficial "pop" approaches to "fashion psychology" that rely on opinion instead of research. "The Psychology of Fashion" is grounded in research and the principles of psychology as a science, not armchair philosophy. Cognitive and behavioral principles and findings are applied to fashion, and all its sequelae. The applied scope in the book is estimable: from considering the psychological variables and impact on work in manufacturing, to consumerism, to fashion's global impacts, the future effects of technology, and of course, the psychological effects of what we wear on our sense of self and on how others perceive us... This book shows us how fashion has impact on, and interacts with, behavior. This is a valuable, readable work from the pioneer of the psychology of fashion. ... show more

  • A good read
Easy to read and well researched/cited.

  • Very good book on a topic that should be much more centerstage in the fashion industry
This book will take you on a comprehensive journey of fashion psychology. Clear concept introductions, references to bodies of research and relatable examples abound, making this book an easy read. All chapters go into sufficient depth to make you feel like you have learned enough....Except for chapter six, where the end of the chapter is rushed and should, in my opinion, be revised to include more depth and details. This section contains a huge amount of callouts to references and a quick succession of poorly detailed references - making it necessary to do some further reading to truly understand. Luckily, further reading suggestions are available, which is helpful. ... show more

  • Save Your Time and Money
The people who are claiming this book is amazing are crazy. This book makes a bunch of claims with little to no support. Hardly even acknowledges the ambiguity in the few studies they reference (almost all of which are studies on less than 30 people). The claims made on such little and poor evidence should make anyone with an iota of an understanding of science or true psychology save their time and do literally anything else. She hardly breaches the topic of the relation of fashion on psychology, and rather spends her time talking about problems she perceives in the fashion industry as a whole. The few claims she does make are hardly specific to fashion, and the ones that are properly attributed are hardly ground breaking. Overall this book gives the feeling of a poorly written paper from psychology 101. ... show more

  • Delightful little read!
I picked this book up simply to skim through a chapter or so but I ended up reading half the book in one sitting! This is a great book for anyone looking for an introduction to fashion psychology. Gives great insight into consumer motivations. This is an easy read because Mair does a great job at explaining concepts. I highly recommend this book to not just anyone who wants to learn about major theories, but to anyone who is interested in fashion. ... show more

  • An inspiring introduction to the psychology of fashion
This book introduces you to the psychology of fashion and it's many facets. It is equal parts informative, compelling, insightful and challenging. The content is useful for anyone working in the fashion industry as well as everyday consumers. The importance of this material could not be more timely and the execution of it could not have been more effective. ... show more
