  • My ABSOLUTE favorite pregnancy book
I have purchased many, many pregnancy books over my two pregnancies (especially during the first one). This is the only one I've repurchased during my second pregnancy because I lent all my books to someone who never gave them back. I've also bought it for some close friends when they've been struggling and needed a boost. I love it. It's the best thing I've read that's geared for pregnant women in the throes of the wonderful weirdness, and world-turned-upside-down-ness that is pregnancy. I love the sense of humor to this book. It makes me laugh out loud. I feel like I have someone to commiserate with about the annoyances of pregnancy, but without snarkiness or real meanness or the kind of opinionatedness that excludes. For instance, my favorite posting: "Wanted: The not-so-brilliant guy (we know it wasn't a woman) who coined the completely inaccurate term 'morning sickness.' Reward: You get to vomit on him at 8 p.m." That's exactly what I needed to hear when I was throwing up around 8 p.n. The book couldn't stop that, but it could make me laugh about it rather than cry. My sister sent me the "Girlfriend's Guide" book, but I found it often just made me feel bad about myself or else took positions that weren't helpful and that made me insecure. For instance, at one, point, it insisted that first-time mothers should forgo midwives and just work with an OB so they don't have to worry about things. Well, I was one of those women who was raised to be completely terrified of labor from when I was a little girl--the "epidural at the first sign of pain" sort, even though I'm pretty tough in other respects, athletically, etc. Then I met a woman, now a dear friend, who slowly helped me to be able to approach labor with far less fear and more empowerment and healthiness, and it felt really important to me to try to do it without medication, if I could. This is not something I feel everyone should do--just something for me, given my previous fear. (And I did it!! And I felt so empowered through the process!) The Girlfriend's Guide book made me feel ashamed for some of these decisions and things that were empowering me by making fun of them. Whereas this wonderful book doesn't judge any woman for how she is deciding to go about things (aside from genuinely terrible things like drinking extensively or smoking while pregnant). Instead, it is informative and fun and realistic. I love it and would recommend it to pretty much any pregnant woman. It also doesn't baby or speak down to women, which seems really important to me. And the multiple perspectives from medical professionals and other mothers, the tips, really come in handy. ... show more

  • Just what I needed.
This is the first pregnancy book I purchased. If you believe that while pregnancy is a wonderful experience that you should be so lucky to have, it still has really sucky parts, then this book is for you. If, however, you believe that It's all rainbows and butterflies and every vomit is God's way of saying he loves you... you may wish to pass. This is a very down to earth, honest book with snippets of information that doesn't get too into every detail, ever. It's a page-a-day set up, to tell you what's generally going on, and what other mother's have experienced as well. I actually read a week at a time. It's a small book, I was surprised by how small it was. So a week takes 5 minutes to read. It basically says, here are some cool things going on inside your body, here are some crappy things you're dealing with right now, and it sucks. But keep in mind it IS temporary, and worth it in the end. I think it's a great book, light and funny, and honest. I plan on giving it to my sister-in-laws when they get pregnant. ... show more

  • Not Done Yet, but So Far, So Good
I've been trying to only read this as I go so that I don't feel too overwhelmed by what's coming up months from now, and so I pick this up every few days and catch up a bit. I'm not that far along yet (11 weeks--and counting) but so far I've liked it. It's way less formal and clinical than my other books and it's good to have the variety. It's more conversational and makes you feel better when it's early in your pregnancy and you haven't told many people so you don't have anyone to assure you that it's ok and normal that you feel like total crap, and don't beat yourself up for not being able to do much beyond collapsing on the couch at the end of the day. Other books will stress exercise (and yes, I exercise, I get it, it's good for me) and this book agrees exercise is good--but they also say that realistically, in the first trimester you may feel terrible and not be able to exercise all that much, and you shouldn't beat yourself up over it. So, in general I look forward to catching up on this every few days. It's reassuring and humorous. ... show more

  • A light in the misery
I just found out that my sister is pregnant with her first and immediately started looking for this book. Both of my pregnancies, I was not happy, I didn't want to be pregnant, I didn't want to have children, on top of that I was sick everyday both times from the day I found out that I was pregnant to the day that both of my children were born. I could have read and read and read a lot of books that would go over every aspect of my pregnancy, but I really wanted no part of it, this book though, gave me a good view of what was going on in a few blurps a day, lots of humor, and real advice (better than eating saltines, I hate saltines...disgusting) Reading this book was the only thing about my pregnancy that I enjoyed, and I looked forward to the new page daily and refused to read ahead. So I couldn't imagine a better gift for my sister's big news than this one. Everyone around her is going to be giving her advice, usually useless, and she probably won't take it anyways. But I hope this book gives her something to smile about the way that it did me. ... show more
